Absolutely fire showcase of St. Lucia’s Kuduro Soca or “Dennery Segment” sound, a local style notorious for slack lyrics and its hi-NRG pace, here served up spicy as fuck by one of the Caribbean island’s premiere DJs for Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes.

Packing pure heat from the town of Dennery in St. Lucia’s Mabouya Valley, DJ Chengz’ mixtape extends an unmissable introduction to Dennery Segment, a fast and grimy offshoot of the Angola “Hard ass” style of Kurudo that’s been banned in the region for its blend of salacious lyrics and rave-inciting rhythms. Also incorporating strong influence from Zouk and Lucian drums, Dennery Segment is a super strong example of punkishly road level party music from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora that highlights the pronounced, technoid Portuguese accent dominating global dancefloor dialogues right now.

Catching 67 minutes of rudely stripped down drum loops and hooks locked with MCs chatting sexually charged filth in Kwéyòl (Saint Lucian Creole), the mix arguably recalls the energy of Carnival as much as the grime and Soca that went into UKF, and bristles with the electric rawness of early Marfox and classic Príncipe. But the defining feature is really the raunchy lyrical content, working in a long tradition of XXX-rated Soca styles but with a bang up-to-the-second sense of economy and directness touching on everything from alcohol problems to “Sex like spaghetti”, and galvanised by the jabbing, gruffly rhythmelodic urgency of the productions.

Little known beyond the region, perhaps aside from diaspora carnivals in US and EU, the infectious percolations of Dennery Segment are bound to incite fervent reactions with all discerning dancers and listeners who love it as rugged and rawly stylish as it comes. DJ Chengz’ expertly selected and blended mixtape is the ideal entry point to Kuduro’s latest mutation for anyone with hips and ears attuned to thrilling new music from the tropics.

Sonic Interventions & Indigenous Resistance                                                                                                                                                      
                                                                  
“IR Sonic Interventions” was first broadcast on 18th July 2020, on Raskattas Radio, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. It featured Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, Dhangsha and Dub Sisters Mapu, Apachita and Esaete. For those who listened in, it was like an exhilarating live gig - raw in sound and text with punk attitude, but disciplined like a Peoples' Army on manoeuvres - everyone jumping in to take the baton then passing it on - everyone looking out for everyone else.



This is what happens when sonic experimentation and co-operation moves music and text beyond current convention. The political commentary and degree of analysis demonstrated a depth that is missing from present day dub, but not at the expense of dance propulsion. Bob Marley and his contemporaries created a framework of militant poetry with which to uplift the spirits of oppressed people. But over forty years on, it is not enough to merely REPRODUCE that template. 



As Sankara FDR say: “this is no photocopy dub.” Aside from spoken testimonies, the session was comprised of field recordings, acoustic rhythms and melodies and uncompromising programmed sequences. It was assembled using a variety of techniques: post-punk cut & paste, dub mixology and live electronic improvisation. This was in fact an ‘alternative news broadcast,’ unashamedly betraying a robust anti-colonial perspective. It was on THAT level.

Sankara Future Dub Resurgence is a group of musicians from Uganda living in  the city of Kampala and in the area near Lake Nalubaale  ,Uganda. They collaborated with  IR ::Indigenous Resistance and Dhangsha to produce the four track EP

Sankara Future Dub Resurgence with Dhangsha, Mapu & Apachita : IR Sonic interventions

Indigenous Resistance has just launched a new full length 12-track cd IR25 Dubversive. This album has tracks "Ivere...The Land," "Luana," and "Sacred Power Dr Das Ragga Mix" all featuring indigenous performers from the South Pacific, most notably from the Solomon Islands.

The roots reggae track "Luana" is sung totally in an indigenous language from the Solomon's and features singers Tohununo and Dublikkle One in a song dedicated to all children whose rights are being disrespected. 

"Ivere..the land" is about environmental devastation and is a collaboration between a US-based singer of black, indigenous and European ancestry, ChristianeD  and Olovotu, an indigenous composer and musician from the south pacific. Ace producer Soy Sos takes indigenous  instruments and beats recorded by Olovotu and adds his own personal touch to them to create a swirling dance floor groove that mixes chants with Christiane D mezmerising lyrics and vocal styling. The track "Sacred Power Dr Das Ragga Mix" features vocals from Solomon Islands performer Tohununo alongside traditional singing from indigenous people in Canada within a reggae ragga riddim created by the founder and bassist of Asian Dub Foundation, Dr Das. "This Land Is Not For Sale..." is about Atenco, a classic land-rights struggle. For some time, IR had been aware of the siege of Atenco and had been following the news through its direct and underground channels. When Asian Dub Foundation contacted us about working on a collaboration around this issue, it made perfect sense to us. Land rights are the center of many indigenous struggles and IR has done tracks & grafitti projects related to this matter. With tracks on recent IR releases, we have hoped to illuminate the independence movement in West Papua, the The Free West Papua Movement (OPM), the plight of the Krikati people of Brasil, or the Minga Indigenia of Colombia. This new collaboration was created through the internet with musical mixes, speech fragments, and ideas flying back and forward in the digital domain. IR's network of dubversive members working in shadows across the Americas from Peru to Colombia, made their contributions by editing, transcribing, translating and recordings. These were relayed via the net to ADF in the UK. 

This is the 25th release on the IR label which over the last 6 years has done numerous collaborations with indigenous performers from the South Pacific doing collaborations solely through the internet which linked musicians like ADF and Adrian Sherwood with performers in the South Pacific. In fact the first 7-inch vinyl, IR2, released by IR was a track for the Free West Papua movement.
