Murder He Wrote features once more on FNG for his eighth release on the label going back to his hard hitting UK Funky roots on 'M808' after skipping around the 1Forty spectrum on his last few releases. 

Blending elements of Broken Beat, UK Garage, Soca and House into his own off-kilter take on bass music, Murder He Wrote’s playful productions and edits have been destroying clubs worldwide for some years now. Originally breaking out via a flurry of releases on the Roska Kicks & Snares imprint, MHW’s tracks have gained heavy support from a diverse range of dance music's most respected tastemakers including Mary Anne Hobbs, DJ EZ, Gilles Peterson, Redlight and Jamz Supernova. Working across 3 decks, his eclectic, low-end focused DJ sets have seen him land guest mixes on BBC Radio 1, Boiler Room, NTS, Rinse FM and BBC 6Music - alongside a touring schedule that’s taken in clubs and festivals around the world including Fabric, Ministry Of Sound and Outlook.

Since 2019 we’ve seen a MHW Boiler Room debut, a production on Fox’s debut album ‘Juice Flow’ on Swing Ting (one of Mixmag’s albums of the year), the heavily supported singles ‘Honey Riddim’ ft Snowy and ‘Worthwhile’ ft. Logan, the latter making the A-List on Rinse FM and Spotify’s 'New Music Friday’, and DJ sets across Europe, North America and Australia. More recently there’s been two collaborations with UK Funky legend Roska, official remixes for Afro B, T-Pain, P Money, Mollie Collins, Zed Bias and Children Of Zeus plus an eclectic run of singles on MHW’s own Rhythm Athletic imprint - amassing over a half a million Spotify streams and support across BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, NTS and 6Music and more guest mixes across the stations too, as recent as Sian Anderson at the start of March.

Murder He Wrote - M808

He might have only landed his first releases in 2014, but in just a few years Murder He Wrote has made more than an impact on the UK’s fertile bass scene. In this short time he’s become pretty infamous for playing a particularly weighty range of club ready tracks. Fusing elements of garage, hip-hop, dancehall and funky, it’s music driven by its eclectic nature, while its ties also lie firmly in the UK. Having signed for two releases last year, Murder He Wrote has recently found somewhat of a home on Roska Kicks & Snares, meanwhile he’s also garnered support from UK veterans Toddla T and Zinc.  

With his FABRICLIVE debut on 10th March just around the corner, he dropped this fresh mix for us to demonstrate the broad spectrum of his musical world.

Murder He Wrote - Rinse FM / Marcus Nasty show guestmix - 15/08/2018

Meet James Ongley AKA Murder He Wrote: self-proclaimed mystery writer and amateur detective by day, prodigal son of UK Funky by night. While we haven't had the chance to research any of his investigative work or read any of his novels, his all-star status in the UK Funky community and beyond as a producer, DJ, and label-head certainly speaks for itself. After a few standout early releases on Roska's Kicks and Snares imprint and big mixes for outlets like Fabric, Rinse FM, and BBC Radio One, James continued to solidify himself as a beacon of influence and taste making in the scene with his own exciting new label Rhythm Athletic. His productions stand out with a degree of smoothness that can be rare and difficult to achieve in an erratic rhythmic pattern like UK funky's. Where his peers often rely too heavily on excessive percussion, James' beats fall right into place without trying to do too much.
