This song was mostly inspired by the concept of mass transit, specifically subways trains.  The opening and closing of doors, the exchange of passengers, an entire day's worth of commuters packed into the first 90%.  But at the end the pace becomes more erratic and more time passes between openings and closings.  Mostly these doors open and close for noone, and the onlooker is often not a commuter, but a dweller seeking refuge from this harsh world.  All of this ingenuity goes into creating an efficient transportation system which keeps most of society flowing, but at the literal end of the day they just remind the most vulnerable among us that we would rather waste energy moving these vessels about than help them live a decent life.
