Autumn has arrived, and it’s a time for change. With the new season comes a new signing to the iconic South East England drum and bass hub Murky Digital: emergent 21-year-old producer Dysfunction comes to the fore this October with their label debut, Beside_Self.

Having made a name for themselves in recent years with an array of self-released material ranging from drums to deep dubstep, the Aberystwyth and Oxford-based DJ has quickly drummed up acclaim for their SoundCloud drops, including the recently released free EP Pyramid Scheme. Currently zeroing in on jump-up and minimal stylings but by no means constrained by a particular subgenre, they bring a boundary-pushing ethos to their oeuvre, drawing on disparate influences across the wider D&B scene ranging from Alix Perez to Original Sin to Tantrum Desire.

Dysfunction’s Murky Digital debut, Beside_Self, is a suitably seismic introduction to this budding beatmaker. Commencing with eerie, delay-soaked plucks, opener “Proximity” bubbles to a searing climax as breakbeats muscle their way into play, peaking with a combination of jagged, innovatively crafted basslines and sudden vocal exclamations. “The Funk”, meanwhile, lives up to its name, utilising jazzy snippets of guitar before hurtling into turbulent, jump-up-infused crescendos dominated by skittish sub-bass. Title track “Beside_Self” is a deep, minimal affair, revelling in reverberating ambiances, while “Concrete Junglist” pairs resonant basslines with frantic percussion, showcasing yet another string to their bow. Last but not least is “Nightmare”, an eerie number which kicks off with moody chords, launching into shrieking drops befitting of the track’s title.

The Beside_Self EP is available exclusively via Juno Download and Spotify from 6 October, reaching a full range of digital service providers the following week on 13 October 2021.

Fresh from the release of Yatuza's Love Is King, drum & bass label Murky Digital return with Roll On Fleek, the latest EP from U.K. based producer Leaf. The EP is a stellar addition to Leaf's back catalogue, which includes releases on AudioPorn, Serial Killerz and Sub-liminal Recordings. With Roll On Fleek, Leaf crafts three bass-heavy bangers designed to light up any sound system they're played on.
Title track ‘Roll On Fleek’ opens the EP. Cavernous sub-bass and swirling pad arrangements create the intro while a rapid drum fill provides an energy jolt ready for the verse. Soon enough, 'Roll On Fleek' becomes a heavy-hitting roller as that familiar bass pattern becomes a booming riff. The final result? Sound system chaos that brings a smile to the face.
Featured artist Druu joins for 'Don Gargon'. Here, a thunderstorm of atonal sounds and single hi- hat patterns make up the intro, the verse becoming a minimal track led by warbling bass and sparse percussion.
'Clicker Ready' closes out Roll On Fleek. Leaf deploys cosmic synth lines and rising percussion. 'Clicker Ready' bubbles and builds, the sounds of rain in a forest joining the other elements later in the introduction. It's atmosphere setting at its finest. An air of unpredictability hangs in the air until those space-age synths ring out another time, and 'Clicker Ready' becomes a rugged, full- blooded club banger.
Roll On Fleek will arrive exclusively to Juno Download & Spotify on 31st March, landing on all digital platforms a week later 7th April.
