Natura Morta, "dead nature" or "still life". This album can be understood as a powerful study of the minute details of the art of electro-acoustic composition, as much as the Renaissance "nature morte" were a masterful display of the artist’s skill in portraying the glow of a ripe fruit, or capturing the light beaming on a vacant chair.

Six tracks, to be listened to as two long explorations in the art of variation and repetition. Layers of drums and percussions intertwine with synth waves making the portrait come to life, detail after detail, until a complex figure emerges from the white canvas. The constant, unsteady sounds, wavering noise, swirling cymbals, and distant feedback gently pull the listener into the picture, letting them enjoy every detail of this beautifully staged compositions.

Recorded at EMS studio, Stockholm, ZKM in Karlsruhe and at the legendary Funkhaus in Berlin, this album mixes influences from both Italian minimalism and the electro-acoustic contemporary scene. Somewhere in between the electronics of Keith Fullerton Whitman, the percussive repetitions of Jon Mueller, and the atmospheric sensibility of Pan-American.

Cognitive dissonance is, at this point, an everyday part of modern society. The difference between belief and reality is blurrier than ever, and there is often sufficient manipulation to both so as to make the distinction intentionally unclear. The source of those manipulations can either be external, or deceptively internal.

False Readings On is the new album from renowned experimental composer, Eluvium. Its creation was originally inspired by themes of cognitive dissonance in modern society. By its conclusion it had become a mirror rather than a magnifying glass, evolving into an hour-long meditation on self-doubt, anxiety, and separation from one's self.

There is an emotional lucidity and melodic ingenuity to Eluvium's music that has made him increasingly stand out from the sea of ambient artists that his earlier albums no doubt helped inspire. Sounding like an orchestra ceaselessly performing even as it sinks beneath an ocean of distortions and tape noise – with the occasional operatic voice piercing the surface – False Readings On is assuredly the most daring, dynamic, and distinct album of his luminous career.

You might be familiar with Matt Christensen as singer and guitarist of atmospheric masterminds Zelienople. His most recent solo endeavour however embodies a song writer deeply involved with his own vision of sound, resulting in an accomplishment strong enough to stand on its own. Matt delivers a longing and emotional outreach through Honeymoons’ six delicate songs and immersing into them provides a feeling of understanding and affiliation that turns solitude into a state of awareness and insight. 

The sparse instrumentation of broad guitar/effects and incisive drum machine adds immediacy to this recording and the airy arrangements keep the perfect balance between song structure, free-form playfulness and silence. Accompanied by Matt’s echoing voice and personal lyrics, his recipe is being formed and dilated into an experience that requires devotion to be fully perceived and appreciated. "Im See-Through" may be the protagonist's self-perception but by guiding his compositions through foggy, pliant tone constellations he leaves us in doubt that Matt's output could ever be considered transparent.

His new album and first for Miasmah is a perfect reminder of how interfering contradictions can make the most interesting installations. The confrontation of organic guitar movements, stirring poetry and patterns of beat arrangements create fascinating tension: Honeymoons’ full scale won't unfold instantly but you will be captivated right away. We’re allowed a deeply moving glance into a contemplative musician's mind by witnessing an outstanding statement for imparting the feeling of companionship.

Another Dark Age is proud to release Exek's debut LP, Biased Advice, which follows one self-titled cassette EP (2014) and a single contribution to a split cassette (2015). The album collects rerecorded and past material, which together stands as the fullest realisation of an Exek identity, honed during two years of haunting Melbourne’s live gig circuit. 

Before forming as a four-piece band in 2014, Exek remained an abstract concept in the mind of front man-to-be, Albert Wolski. With songs written but no musicians to perform them he enlisted Andrew Brocchi (synthesiser), Henry Wilson (bass) and Sam Dixon (drums) and together they began recording material according to Wolski 's vision.

The addition of Nell Grant on saxophone made previously murky reference points plainly obvious: Exek are the progeny of a Melbourne scene that established itself around Dave Chesworth and Philip Brophy’s Innocent record label of the 1980s and its greatest offering,  Essendon Airport’s Palimpsest LP (1981). But Exek  dared to abandon the pop and funk tropes of the early Australian new wave scene reaching out to  German post-punk of the same era. Wolski’s songwriting is akin to that of the records put out by Hannover’s No Fun Records and Hamburg’s Zickzack, channeling the droll lyricism of The 39 Clocks and saturated with self-deprecating Attitude.

Exek are messengers for today’s young, unemployed, immobile, self-obsessed middle-class.  The themes of societal isolation, heartbreak, consumerism are all funnelled through metaphors of terminal illness, monsters and bondage. Their vision mirrors Tuxedomoon’s ‘Holiday for Plywood’ but crucially Biased Advice is a sermon that Exek preach to themselves. The band pit themselves as both victims and saviours living in a world that’s trying to extinguish them, or worse still, mould them into boring automatons.

The conceptual weight carried in Wolski’s lyrics follows on from process. Dub and other studio techniques are used throughout Biased Advice and are no better evidenced in the 16-minute modern (and instant) classic, ‘Baby Giant Squid.’ This song remains unchanged from it’s cassette release on Melbourne’s Resistance/Restraint label but spread out over one side of a record it lays bare its perfection. Basslines that stand out one moment give way to dubbed out percussion, hissing tape delay and reverb drenched vocals. Simply, this post-kraut-dub-psyche-punk excursion looks back over it’s shoulder as it leaves ‘Bella Lugosi’s Dead’ for dead. It’s a sublime balance of improvisation and cold calculation.

It’s the tension between this teetering psychotic nihilism and arrangement with studio-like precision that gives Biased Advice the tone of a forewarning. But of what?
