"I kind of had a revelation once seeing him [Randy Weston] play live. It happened for me in a particular time in my life when I recently made the decision to be an artist. And that didn't come lightly for a number of reasons one of which was that I was in graduate school in physics. It was like I was undergoing this huge rupture in my life path or something....to see the real clarity, focus and intimacy of it...suddenly I realized this was the example I needed."

Vijay Iyer, a self-taught pianist and newly minted MacArthur fellow, is one of the most original musicians currently working in jazz. His music is based firmly in the jazz tradition, but also encompasses a wide range of western and non-western sources including his South Asian roots. An accomplished electronic musician as well, Iyer's work is also informed by his academic background which includes a Phd. in music and technology from the University of California at Berkeley.

In the 40s, jazzmen came of age on the stages of dance halls. Pianist Barry Harris and drummer Billy Higgins capture the view from those stages. Recorded in 1992, they remember “watching tassels sway” and the bebop hoofer who “would actually roll up to the microphone wearing a pair of skates — and tell the band ‘…anything by Charlie Parker!’”

Producer Andrew Parsons brings us a conversation with the late James Moody about the story behind his famous solo.

"I always thought of the acoustic bass as the quintessential jazz instrument... I knew that jazz meant cool, and hip, and on the cutting edge, and to me that was my great uncle, and he played bass. Most of people I saw that playing upright bass were really cool jazz musicians."

With a style steeped in jazz, classical, funk and hip hop -- Christiane McBride has played on more than three hundred recordings. The Philadelphia born bassist is one of the most sought after players in jazz. Our producer David Goren talked with McBride about the Philly tradition, his own work in jazz and the shrinking distances in the world of music.

Percussionists Susie Ibarra and Roberto Rodriguez have strong jazz roots, but take inspiration from the music of many cultures. A trip to the Philippines, Ibarra's ancestral home, inspired them to document its indigenous music. They also record electro-acoustic explorations of traditional Filipino gong music as the duo "Electric Kulintang."

“Music was unexpected. I always wanted to be a writer and I still do. I was always turned on by words, by the way people could use words and that kind of power.”

Vocalist Jose James’ collaborations range from jazz standards to British dubstep – working with McCoy Tyner , Chico Hamilton, experimental producer Flying Lotus and indie tastemaker Gilles Peterson. For James, music is always a personal exploration. For JazzStories, he recalls his own path of musical discovery.

"We have a mixture of many elements from the world. The classical music from Europe- the sense of melody and deep harmonic sense- and on the other side we have people coming from Spain, Morocco, Yemen- like jazz, it blends rich rhythm with harmony."

Siblings Yuval, Anat and Avishai Cohen have been developing their 

musical connection since birth -- while growing up together in Tel Aviv, 

attending the Berklee School of Music and now in their band 3 Cohens. In 

this Jazz at Lincoln Center Listening Party, they discuss their musical 

education in Israel and how three siblings come together in one band.

"For me I always grew up watching my father and other jazz musicians, they never played for that many people, they were always struggling. They didn't make any money...My daddy being a jazz musician was always very direct...so he didn't afford you the illusion of childhood."

America’s Ottoman Diaspora
Music Extra: The Music of Time Episode 3 of 6

Between 1895 and 1923, as the empire was unravelling, several hundred thousand Greeks, Armenians, Arabs, Jews and Turks emigrated to America, bringing their music with them. When war, expulsions and massacres tore their world apart, music helped them preserve their culture and their memories—and, in some cases, to make a living. The Ottoman migration to America coincided with the birth of the phonograph industry and its discovery of a lucrative “ethnic” market. That in turn helped to nurture a lively nightclub scene on Manhattan’s Eight Avenue, where skilful Ottoman musicians and sinuous belly dancers pulled in the late-night crowds into the 1980s.

As European-style national states took the place of the old multi-ethnic empire, the old “oriental” music was often frowned upon or even suppressed back home. But it continued to thrive in the diaspora, which preserved songs and styles that would otherwise have been lost.What happened to the music once it was transplanted? What did it mean to the emigrants, and to the generations that followed? How has it helped to hold their communities together?

Maria Margaronis traces the story of those Ottoman musicians, and explores the mysterious power of their makam-based music, which binds together joy and sorrow, spiritual longing and sensual desire. This is one of a series of 6 programmes which examine the interactions between music, identity and social change at key points in history.
