“Solo: A Conversation with Matana Roberts and Tyshawn Sorey”
Composers and musicians Matana Roberts and Tyshawn Sorey discuss the collaborative nature of solo music and composing as an embodiment of the self.

Matana Roberts is a sound experimentalist, musician, composer, and alto saxophonist who works in many performance and sound mediums, including improvisation, dance, poetry, and theater. Their music aims to expose the mystical roots and intuitive spirit raising traditions of American creative expression.

Newark-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey is celebrated for his virtuosity, his mastery and memorization of highly complex scores, and an ability to blend composition and improvisation in his work. He has performed nationally and internationally with his own ensembles and with such artists as John Zorn, Vijay Iyer, Roscoe Mitchell, Muhal Richard Abrams, Wadada Leo Smith, Marilyn Crispell, George Lewis, Claire Chase, Steve Lehman, Jason Moran, Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, and Myra Melford, among many others.

This podcast comprises a series of monthly conversations organized by Adam Pendleton and featuring pairs of notable writers, theorists, philosophers, and musicians. Participants include Jack Halberstam and Lynne Tillman, Michael Hardt and Joshua Chambers-Letson, Ruby Sales and Simone White, Susan Howe and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and Tyshawn Sorey and Matana Roberts. This audio series is published on moma.org as part of the exhibition “Adam Pendleton: Who Is Queen?” Excerpts from these dialogues are periodically incorporated into the sound installation within the exhibition, on view September 18, 2021–January 30, 2022. The conversations are presented in fragments, purposely incomplete.

Makaya McCraven moves between genres like jazz, hip-hop and funk at lightning speed. Unquestionably respected as a jazz artist, he believes that a receptiveness to other styles is what truly makes a good jazz player. Ceaselessly inventive and productive, McCraven worked with an impressive array of world class musicians, including Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Bernie Worrell, Soulive, Charles Neville, Marcus Strickland, and Shabaka Hutchings.

Our final release of the summer comes in form of Couture’s debut LP, ‘Fashion Week’.⁣

The premiere of the A side, ‘Paris’, is streaming via the Vaagner Soundcloud now and showcases a gracefully woven gesture of solo piano and guitar works, connected by a suite of ambient synth movements and coated by a layer of faint hiss.⁣
⁣
After the first moment onward, Couture manage to present work so profoundly emotive and heartfelt that it beckons its own sense of space, from the initial, ardent series of piano notes on ‘Paris’, to the final, swooning yet tantalizing synth layers on ‘Milan’, the albums tongue in cheek title gives little indication of the profound beauty, opulent emotional grandeur and sensitive underlying core that end up making Couture’s debut ‘Fashion Week’ such a substantial body of work.⁣

'Couture - Fashion Week' is on a limited run of 20 hand made vinyl LP’s, produced by Disc Archive Berlin and made available as a pre-order this Friday via the Vaagner Bandcamp.
