Besides his music, I was always attracted to  Beethoven’s manuscripts, that uneasy almost frenetic way in which he expressed his musical ideas. I went back to those manuscripts,  I was struck -above all- by his signature, the fragility in which the great Ludwig van sealed his works. Unterschrift is an investigation or perhaps a reflection on that space, on that periphery of his music. MT

"We: A Conversation with Michael Hardt and Joshua Chambers-Letson"
Performance studies scholar Joshua Chambers-Letson and political philosopher Michael Hardt discuss the politics of love and the composition of social movements.

Joshua Chambers-Letson is professor of performance studies at Northwestern University, author of "After the Party: A Manifesto for Queer of Color Life" and "A Race So Different: Law and Performance in Asian America," and co-editor with Tavia Nyong’o of José Esteban Muñoz’s "The Sense of Brown."

Michael Hardt teaches at Duke University, where he is codirector of the Social Movements Lab. Among the books he has co-authored with Antonio Negri are "Empire" and, most recently, "Assembly."

This podcast comprises a series of monthly conversations organized by Adam Pendleton and featuring pairs of notable writers, theorists, philosophers, and musicians. Participants include Jack Halberstam and Lynne Tillman, Michael Hardt and Joshua Chambers-Letson, Ruby Sales and Simone White, Susan Howe and Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and Tyshawn Sorey and Matana Roberts. This audio series is published on moma.org as part of the exhibition "Adam Pendleton: Who Is Queen?" Excerpts from these dialogues are periodically incorporated into the sound installation within the exhibition, on view September 18, 2021–January 30, 2022. The conversations are presented in fragments, purposely incomplete.

Keep Walking

On 25th May Ireland will vote on amending its restrictive abortion laws. I was asked by Room for Rebellion and C.A.N.V.A.S. to create a piece for a compilation in aid of pro-choice charities to be released prior to the referendum. For logistical reasons this compilation won’t be released until later in the year, so I’ve decided to share the piece now, a week away from the referendum.

ABOUT THE PIECE:

“I am an old woman now, with one foot in the grave and the other on its edge.” 

Like most people of my generation, I studied the work of Peig Sayers (1873-1958) at school and the opening lines of her 1936 autobiography "Peig" are burned into my consciousness. "Peg 2018" takes those opening lines as a starting point, but departs immediately from the original, imagining the reflections of an entirely different, fictional Peg, an Irishwoman born in the 1950s.

This week's prompt was to interpret a painting by Agnes Martin as if it were a graphic score.

I did not do that, specifically.

Instead, I was inspired by her paintings to try to create the auditory version of a series of horizontal lines. What would that sound like? Obviously the same sound, but I don't react to her paintings like I would to something static. Instead, I find my gaze is very active as I look for patterns on a small and large scale.

To recreate this, I thought I would take some field recordings (and other, unlabeled large files lying around my hard-drive) and EQ them aggressively so that only the most active frequencies in the original would be the only audible frequencies in the processed version.

I also wanted a little rhythmic variation, so I put them into Ableton's Simpler in Slice mode and made some interesting patterns.

After about 1:21, all of the tracks are run through a delay with 99% feedback and 100% wet - so basically all you hear is the delay, which could go on for(almost)ever. I added a little sonic interesting by shifting the delay times in the left and right channels (does this sound basically like Steve Reich's phasing? Sure.) This generated some sweeping overtones that were entirely accidental but very much welcome.

At the end, I added a sample of a violinist from a jam session and added some subtle variations in the melodic pattern. It feels like the beginning of a new section instead the end of the song, which feels appropriate.
