During flow, attention is freely invested to achieve a person’s goals because there is no disorder to strengthen out or no threat for the self to defend against. When a person can organize his or her consciousness so as to experience flow as often as possible, the quality of life starts to improve.   In flow, we are in control of our psychic energy and everything we do adds order to consciousness. Following a flow experience, our self becomes more complex than that it had been before, due to two broad psychological processes – differentiation and integration. The self becomes differentiated as the person after a flow experience feels more capable and skilled. Flow leads to integration because thoughts, intentions, feelings and the senses are focused on the same goal. After a flow episode, one feels more together than before, not only internally but also with respect to other people and the world in general. Differentiation promotes individuality while integration facilitates connections and security.  To improve the quality of life, we can try to make external conditions match our goals and also change how to experience external conditions. Both are needed. Each by itself is insufficient.

Take a trawl through Mushrooms Projects’ ample back catalogue, and you’ll immediately be struck by their constant artistic progression. Throughout their career, Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano have refused to stand still, with each successive release offering a subtle signs of musical evolution.

They’re at it again on Rivea Corymbosa, a sophomore set that’s markedly different – albeit similarly minded – to their 2013 debut album, Undergrass. That album bristled with psychedelic intent, offering fuzzy, thickset fusions of dub-disco grooves, gritty funk-rock guitar licks and acid-fried musical flourishes. It was in marked contrast to their early 12” singles, which offered a nu-disco-era take on the pioneering Cosmic Disco sound developed in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s by fellow Italians Daniele Baldelli and Beppe Loda.

With Rivea Corymbosa, the Parma-based production duo has moved on once more. For starters, it’s far breezier and more positive in feel than many of their previous releases. The claustrophobic atmosphere and drowsy textures, so noticeable on Undergrass, have been replaced by the kind of lazy, sun-kissed vibe that evokes thoughts of Adriatic sunsets and afternoons spent by the pool on the Italian Riviera.

Even more startling is the duo’s expanded musical repertoire. The album features a much wider array of elements, from the title track’s darting Rhodes keys, vintage synth solos and wah-wah guitar flashes, to the humid pedal steel lines of “Baiano”, and the husky spoken vocals and spooky flute solos of the sparse, bongo-laden “Pulsacao”. They’re not afraid to utilize their own field recordings, either, as the children’s chatter underpinning recent single “Dirty Bolas” perfectly proves.

Throughout, the percussion feels loose and organic, the guitars casual but funky, the keys sumptuous and sensual, and the bass lines warm, rich and intoxicating. It’s the sound of two confident musicians, comfortable in their art, making music to soothe minds and gently tease punters towards the dancefloor.

The undergrowth crackles and the leaves tremble in time. If you hold your breath and listen carefully, you will notice there is something strange going on in the woods of La Tempestad. And if you are curious enough to follow the hidden path into the thick forest, you will find them, sitting around a colorful campfire, preparing some kind of cosmic tea. There is Juliano Gomez, holding the pot, slowly pouring hypnotic sounds and tribal grooves. Breger & Timboletti are sitting right next to him, they brought some lost spices and secret ingredients to cook up a rare and delicious variation.

Nicola Cruz is an Ecuador musician. His creative process involves an attentive, careful search for the living roots and rituals that are part of South American identity—its Andean and African origins in particular — valuing its rhythms, oral traditions, instruments and the energy they transmit. “Fuego Nuevo” explores rhythmic forms, inspired in Afro-Cuban percussion, cavernous acoustics and distortion. A dialogue created mainly with a 606 machine as a drum base, following different combinations of ‘claves’ as a tool for temporal organization in these tracks. Percussion has always been my main voice, so I try to rediscover it every time by submitting myself to different rituals when composing music, like warming up musical ideas as mantras for a while before I take any decision of recording. In a way, the drums have always represented fire for me, which was the script to follow for this EP.

Levanta Muertos:
I've been testing this one for almost a year now.  I love exploring with different instruments, in this case the Didgeridoo (which does the bass) that is so rich harmonically, and the 'Pingullo', a classic two hole flute from the amazon, recorded by Julio Vicencio, eternal collaborator and mate.  It is so interesting combining this two side: synthetic modular textures with organic harmonics from these woodwind instruments.

Ripple:
For this EP in particular, I've decided to undust my 606, and part from there.  Rhythm has always been my voice, so sketching ideas through patterns of this drum machine was something that somehow lead this EP.  It's also a challenge to traduce such a 'square' machine in terms of rhythm cadence, to groove in a afro-latin way.  Ripple has that raw energy of some very pre-historic dance.

Yeva:
Not often I keep the same melody throughout the song, but sometimes certain songs ask for that, as is the case of Yeva.  I knitted around the melody, trying to keep it mellow but powerful.

Limon Pelado:
This one is all rhythm. I tried to play with claves, which is a very important aspect of afro-latin music.  It basically defines accents and somehow weights the song in one direction.  In a way all these pieces are one (of the many) envisions of afro-latin electronic futurism.
