This week on Topshelf we’re delighted to have with us, one of our artists of the year in Japanese resident and balaeric champion, Max Essa.


Having been producing and DJ’ing since the 90’s, Max Essa is both a Dj’s Dj and a Producers Producer with class oozing out of his record collection, as well as through his body of work which has seen it supported by the likes of Andrew Weatherhall & David Mancuso. 

With a highly unique style often blending elements of ambience, soul and funk, his early releases like ‘2 be the one U like’, ‘Uptown Vibration’, ‘Caress’, ‘How Do U Feel?’ & ‘Water Business’ perfectly encapsulate the rebirth of a sound lost since the 80’s, utilising rich, deep synths, airy guitars, slapping baselines and infectious piano chords to mold his distinctive sound.

2024 has seen Max Essa continue his never ending golden era with 4 EP’s including the release of the beautifully crafted ‘We Live in the Hills’ with Eddie C which is in our opinion, the EP of the Year, with the record playing like an instrumental to a lost Fleetwood Mac album with hints of Crazy P. Genius and genuinely some of the most inspiring work we’ve heard this year, from an EP we will never stop listening to.
This year also saw a wonderful collaboration with Berlin based Englishman David Harks on ‘The Clean Trip’ EP, an moodie, indie dance release showcasing Essa still knows exactly how to work a vocal with every tracks ‘Plastic Bones’, ‘Magic Eyes’, ‘Blind Horizons’ & ‘Lobster Boys’ all being a certified moonlight anthems.

Now with a mix for us which delivers in full, we are delighted to present Topshelf 0128 with one of our Artists of the Year in Max Essa. Enjoy.

Italian production duo, Mushrooms Project, make their debut on Jansen Jardin with the wonderful, ‘Galattica’. Releases for labels like Under The Shade and Is It Balearic? and remixes for the likes of Tirk, Lipservice and Nang have introduced their blissed-out, Mediterranean sound to fans around the world.

Galattica is 11 minutes and 45 seconds of high plains drifting, dream disco for late night drives and sunset sessions. A lush combination of Euro disco arpeggios and West Coast guitars spill out across a landscape of live percussion, bass and dub acrobatics. This is the soundtrack to a Spaghetti Western set in Ibiza. A Fistful of Cervezas.

The remix comes courtesy of the mighty Chicago Damn who has been responsible for some extraordinary music from his debut on Mark E’s Merc label to releases on Claremont 56 and his own eponymous imprint. Here he re-imagines the original track in the image of Model 500, stripping away the music to a raw machine groove. Dark, atmospheric and undeniably aimed at the floor.

Mushrooms Project boys Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano are back with another strong 12", this time mixing fellow Italian disco outfit Soupaczar (so far as I can tell - Under The Shade never give us the barest sniff of sales info...). Their mix of "So Mr Leary" turns the Italo-prog of the original into an Italo-cosmic-prog driver. It's the A-side rework by Mixed Blood Cuts / Padded Cell man Richard Sen that really caught my ears here though. He dispenses with the rock vocals and heads straight to the dancefloor with an epic cosmic disco driver that really gets in a tight, funky groove - perfect 2am play. Ray Mang is also on hand to add one of his organic, percussive disco refixes, turing the vocals into a disco-not-disco holiday pop sing-along.

The man, the myth, the legend. Sean Johnston is an acid house veteran, techno survivor, and freelance disco consultant. He’s best known for two projects: Hardway Bros and A Love From Outer Space. The latter originally began ten years ago as a nocturnal experiment with the much missed legend Andrew Weatherall. The vibe is still alive and you can feel it in this episode. Enjoy a truly spiritual slo mo journey coast to coast.
