Our latest premiere comes from Copenhagen’s Creak Inc. 5 releases deep into the world of jazzed up electronic music - having featured the laid-back house grooves of Terry Tester, break-beat anthems of Kaidi Tetham, to the smoothest rap and r&b from Copenhagen’s own NATKAT - it’s safe to say Creak Inc. have proven themselves a go-to address for all lovers of jazz-tinged electronics.

Next up on the label is newcomer Nejrup’s debut EP. But don’t let the word debut fool you into thinking this EP is anything short of musical mastery. This is the kind of debut EP that feels as though it’s been in the works for half a lifetime, boasting remarkable instrumentation, as well as meticulous production and sound-design. Nejrup’s three original tracks, and a stellar remix by K15 - a master of all things soulful - leave little to be desired. Our favourite off the EP is the A2. Calm Cacophony kicks off as 16th hihats set a steady pace, rhodes harmonies and touching synth melodies pull at your heartstrings. Through the calm emerges a tight groove, and drums and synthesised arpeggios erupt in an emotional climax. The energy ebbs and swells, building up for a final crescendo, then disappearing as quickly as it came, and leaving you dizzy in it’s wake.

For us, Calm Cacophony ticks all the boxes: beautiful harmony, virtuosic musicianship, high emotion and crisp production. Our only critique would be the name, as there’s sure to be little cacophony to be found anywhere that Nejrup could possibly sway! Nejrup bursts onto the scene with an EP that’s sure to turn some heads, and we definitely can’t wait to hear what else he has in store for us. Manda is out April 27th on Creak Inc. Buy it here.

Mint Condition 3 Year Anniversary Show (NTS) 6/8/20

Dozens of cherished recordings were made during the legendary “golden age” of Ethiopian music, an era stretching from the early 1960’s through the mid-1970’s. Less-discussed are the songs made in the aftermath of the 1974 revolution that toppled Emperor Hailu Selassie I. The acclaimed and highly sought-after LP by Hailu Mergia and the Walias, Tche Belew, an album of instrumentals released in 1977, is perhaps the most seminal of these recordings. The story of the Walias band is a critical chapter in Ethiopian popular music, taking place during a period of music industry flux and political complexity in the country.

Hailu Mergia, a keyboardist and arranger diligently working the nightclub scene in Addis Ababa, formed the Walias in the early 1970’s with a core group of musical colleagues assembled from the remnants of prior working bands attached to the Zula and Venus clubs. One of the first “private” bands, the Walias got a steady gig at the prestigious Hilton Addis Ababa and remained independent from the government-supported bands of the time as well as from the clubs who employed bands.

MIMS is excited to premiere "Alageyik Destanı D2D Session" by Turkish psych originators Moğollar. 

Due for worldwide release this Friday via Night Dreamer, "Alageyik Destanı D2D Session" is the third and final single, from their forthcoming  double album, "Anatolian Sun part 1 & part 2", their stunning career overview session and first new recordings for over a decade. 

The session recorded at Artone Studios in Haarlem, sees the band cutting a compendium of their rawest hits and most-wanted psychedelic rock classics – including the J.Dilla-sampled ‘Haliç’te Güneşin Batışı' for Night Dreamer's Direct-to-disc sessions series.  This follows on from sessions by the likes of Sarathy Korwar, Emma-Jean Thackray, Seu Jorge & Rogê and Gary Bartz & Maisha.

"Alageyik Destanı D2D Session", originally released as a single by the group in 1972, is an ancient folkloric tale fused with Western pop, a clear example of the group's pioneering and now classic Anadolu psych sound. The trippy single sees the stringed Yaylı Tambur (the oldest bowed Turkish instrument) take charge across triumphant drum breaks and mystical organ blends. The session was produced by BaBa ZuLa’s Osman Murat Ertel – a stellar link-up that brings Moğollar’s original psychedelic rock full circle with the contemporary Anadolu psych it inspired. The full album will be available digitally and across a two vinyl LP set on December 11.
