Mix 26 comes from dear friend of the label and Revelation Time shop owner Eiji Taniguchi, who(with Norio Sato) is responsible for compiling the 'Heisei No Oto' compilation. Interview (excerpt) below..

MFM: Thanks for joining the series Eiji. How is life in Osaka?

ET: It's a pleasure to join the series along with other great lineups. The state of emergency has just been lifted in Osaka. Bars & restaurants are starting to open later than 8pm gradually. Everyone is feeling like doing parties again now. I miss when it was more lively with many tourists. Compared to Tokyo, it’s more chill and relaxed. And things are much cheaper although it's the 2nd biggest city in Japan.

MFM: Is it a healthy city in terms of culture, art and nightlife?

ET: About 5 years ago, clubs were cracked down and people couldn’t dance after 1am but it became legal and now it is allowed to open clubs till morning. I think it’s not so close to the mainstream, and you can be more free from commercialism and you can do what you want.

MFM: Your record store Revelation Time has gained a lot of appreciation and respect within the worldwide music industry. How did it all start?

ET: I was more like a collector, private dealer, buying records in Europe, States, selling them on the internet. But I got bored of sitting in front of the computer for a long time, then I opened my shop. Fortunately you can have shops on like 4th floor of the building for cheap in Japan. And luckily I met many good friends and famous DJs, artists I had never imagined to meet before. I learned how people listen to music, and how to recommend music.

MFM: Osaka counts many more record stores, most of them in the same area too. Do you have an explanation to why so many record shops can survive next to each other?

ET: I think there is relatively less pressure economically to live in Osaka and more small shops with speciality than big commercial shops. People try not to compete but help each other to coexist. I personally try to sell different stuff from other shops. It’s the same for clubs. In clubs, you sometimes find party flyers of other clubs. We have many tourists from Asia, not only from Europe, Australia, and the States, after relaxed visa (of course not at the moment), we have sales from people of many different countries.

MFM: Heisei No Oto contains music released almost exclusively on CD. What do you think is the reason that a lot of Japanese music got released on CD but not on vinyl? 

ET: I think it was a global trend but a specific reason for Japan is the residential environment. CDs take up less space than records and 1990 was the peak of the bubble economy, CD was a better format for the mass market. But vinyls for DJs were still pressed in the 90's because there wasn’t CDJ yet. Japanese Hip-Hop became popular in the 90’s and my friend DJs in the UK wanted those Japan exclusive releases so much. 

MFM: How is that for you, does the CD have a different meaning or value to you compared to a vinyl record?

ET: For me it’s just a different source of music. I was into 80’s stuff but as my interest moved to 90’s, it was very natural to start to dig CDs. I think I bought almost 1000 CDs in the last few years, but I'm still buying a lot of vinyls too. I love the sound of vinyl of course but I like the clear hi-fi sound CD too. And it’s very easy to digitize. 

MFM: Did you encounter a lot of difficulties with making the selection and contacting the artists for Heisei No Oto?

ET: I guess it’s relatively easier to find artists than before, thanks to the internet and social media. I almost gave up on licensing one track but Jamie suggested to find the player and contact, (actually the artist was a fictional character) and it worked. Some artists weren’t so interested at first but I think everyone is happy to get involved now. More artists understand now that people listen to music regardless of when they are made, after Youtube and music subscription.

MFM: Hey Lewie, how have you been lately?

TW: I dipped out to East Asia and Australia for the infamous Berlin winter and now I’m back ready for the euro warmth. Though it’s in no hurry to arrive here just yet.

MFM: There's a new record coming on Basic Spirit, the label you run with Jamie Tiller, and it all looks rather secretive... Can you tell us more about it Lew E? :) 

TW: I made these tracks when I was holed up sick for a week. Not being able to go to the studio I relied strictly on samples and software, which was fun to change the workflow up a little bit. I wanted to make some very club ready tracks, without any intention for a release. They (rather obviously) sample two well known tracks, but there’s a lot of new ideas too. I use a different name as it felt like a different style and approach to how I usually go about things. I think there will be more Lew E things on the horizon though :D.

MFM: Previous releases on Basic Spirit also had this '90s touch to it. What is it that you like about (music from) that era?

TW: I grew up in the 90s so a lot of the music coming out then really hits the nostalgic feels. But also, really interesting things were happening with technology, and it became a lot more affordable to put together a record. So there were a lot of - for lack of a better term - laymen releasing electronic music. Some of which had very new and out-there approaches to processes like sampling, mixing and arranging. But trends and technology all moved along so quickly that some of these sounds and ideas never had a chance to get fully fleshed out. Which is why it’s nice to pick up where some left off. People are currently very responsive to this late 90s/early 2000s sound, which is great for me because that’s a time when I really fell in love with electronic music. As a DJ, I’m playing these really personal tracks that I discovered as a teenager, and for the first time since I began playing parties/clubs 18 years ago, people seem to really understand them. It’s a very cool feeling.

MFM: You've also started a new more pop oriented project called a.s.o. together with vocalist Alia Seror O’Neill. Has it always been a dream or goal of yours to start a more band kind of project? Does it require a different writing/recording approach compared to when making dance music for the clubs?

TW: I like making music that I like listening to. And with the pandemic in full swing in 2020, I was having a little break from club music, and diving deeper into other styles of music I enjoy. Both from a listening and producing perspective. I found it to be a very different approach. It’s more melody/hook driven and focuses on getting ideas down quickly as they’re forming. A lot of the time I would use a basic keyboard and guitar to record, and Alia would add vocal melodies and harmonies on the fly. Sometimes it could get difficult when we would both want to put our fleeting ideas down at the same time! On that note, collaboration is never easy for me as I like to have full creative control of whatever it is I’m working on, and sometimes the creative paths divide and compromises have to be made. Sometimes the compromised path is thick and thorny, and sometimes it is paved gold and smells of roses.

MFM: How did you go through the selecting and recording process, any specific record or mood you had planned?

TW: I came across a bunch of really nice tracks all in a relatively similar downtempo/shoegaze style, and wanted to make a mix of music like that. For moody home/car/train etc listening. I also included a forthcoming Cousin remix of an a.s.o. single which I love and wanted to share early!

“Not sure if you remember the record label 'The Balearic Sounds of …' and they would select an artist and re-release their most “balearic” cuts. So like Lucio Battisti, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby Stills & Nash etc etc. Artists that might be considered “pop” or “rock” but have a few island time heaters stashed in the back catalogue. It really opened my eyes to the fact that balearic music is a vibe moreso than a genre. This mix is a little bit of that, and a lot of the fact that I’ve always wanted to do a soft, dad rock, strummy guitar mix. Got some new, some old, some ambient, some sing-a-long. Even ventures away from the beach aesthetic and more into the untapped balearic landscape of cattle farms and dusty bush roads. Probably sounds best with your feet up on your back verandah, fresh VB stubby in hand, admiring the handiwork you’ve just bestowed on your lawn. Maybe with the barbie warming up…”

Intro

The 55th edition of the MindTrip Podcast, comes from the west coast of USA and it's courtesy of Drumcell. Real name Moe Espinosa, he has was born in San Gabriel Valley, a culturally diverse neighborhood that still breeds inspiration for his work. San Gabriel Valley is also where he and the Raíz brothers, Vangelis and Vidal, met and founded Droid Behavior in the early 2000s which lead to the infamous Interface warehouse series and launch of the techno label Droid Recordings. He has a long history as a dj and producer of original and remixed tracks on his own label Droid as well as on CLR, Electric Deluxe, Dystopian, Torque, Detroit Underground, and much more.

In 2016, Drumcell debuted his ambient project HYPOXIA on his experimental label BL_K NOISE. Inspired by science fiction soundtracks and the sounds of artists like John Carpenter, Wendy Carlos, Goblin and Vangelis. Hypoxia was created to step away from the dance floor and into a broader space of contemplative drama. Drumcell explores and discovers the analogue world as much as the digital world of music production, to finally combine them into his very own raw, suspenseful and hypnotic style just like he perfectly expressed it on his debut mix for the MindTrip podcast here.

After moving to Berlin in 2014, Amotik has been steadily building a base in the city that significantly inspired him. Starting in 2015 with a series of EPs on his self-titled imprint, he was soon regularly featured in the Groove Magazine and Resident Advisor monthly charts. Having developed a unique style of hypnotic/atmospheric techno with a relentless raw undertone, his consistency as both a DJ and producer has seen him perform at some of the most exciting clubs and festivals around the globe.
After 10 vinyl releases on his own label (and guest appearances on 47, Bpitch Control, Figure), late 2019 saw Amotik take on the most ambitious release to date – ‘Vistar’ (Hindi for expand/extended). The first full-length double vinyl LP on his label was also accompanied by a debut live tour to end the year.

Groove Magazine’s ‘Essential Albums’ and also earned Mixmag’s ‘Album of the Month’ title.
2020 sees Goethebunker and Amotik team up for ‘Adyant’. A new bi-monthly party at the renowned Essen venue. Adyant (Hindi meaning: ‘Beginning to End’) is a new series where Amotik will have the opportunity to curate and invite guests who have inspired his journey, as well as playing extended sets himself. The club is a long-standing mainstay in Essen, constructed from a former bomb shelter with a powerful function one sound system. The perfect setting to commence the Adyant series.
