The Creation of the World (2016) was commissioned by and dedicated to South Hill Guitars (James Reid and J.P. Shields). The two movements of the piece are based on different creation stories--one South-Asian, and the other Chinook. 

The first movement, "Ocean and Her Cloud Daughters", and utilizes indian modes and rhythmic cycles. In this creation story, the earth is formed as Ocean attempts to hide from the seductive Sun, covering herself with her daughters, the clouds. Listen for the contrasting Indian modes and rhythmic cycles as they correspond to each character (Sun, Ocean, Clouds).

The second movement is called "Coyote Draws Yakail-Wimakl". In this traditional chinook creation story, the creator (embodied today as a Coyote), begins to dance as a remedy for his loneliness. His dance, which begins in sadness, builds into an ecstatic fugue in 11/8.  

(Yakail-Wimakl is the traditional chinook name for the Columbia river.)
