Ellington's Sacred Music Concert: The Spirit of Duke Ellington at Sing Sing

A group of talented men organize and perform musical selections written or inspired by Duke Ellington as part of the Resident Ensemble at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. They collaborate with Carnegie Hall Musical Connections artists throughout the season to develop instrumental and vocal skills-- as well as general musicianship-- to generate new music and perform for large audiences at the facility.

then there was high school life's cruel 
realizations are awakened 
drama queens pushing dreams

they think it's okay to use the word of hate in the hallways 

now it's girls vs boys as he leaves the house behind 
issues of chromosomes and melanin become intertwined 
he wants a wall to keep them out he calls the woman nasty 
but when a whole race cannot breathe, suddenly he's silent

they were growing working playing living in their own paradise 
snatched from their homes in the dead of the daylight 
the big ship came it was out of their hands 
chained up and shackled, brought to a mean land 
worked all day till the pitch black night 
for the next generation to take up flight 
if only they knew the centuries of violence that massa had brewed 

we cannot be blind to the violence we see 
you know he's not safe in that black hoodie 
the world is our oyster and life is our drug but when we say our lives matter you just shrug
