"I almost always get started on mixes from falling in love with a particular song and the moods it evokes. I then try to find other songs to extend and develop that feeling further. In the case of this mix the anchor song was ‘Jungle is a Shapeshifter’ by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, which was first encountered during restorative yin yoga class back in 2019. It got played almost every day in my room throughout 2020. It helped me to feel calm and set the backdrop for my mind drifting off to wonderful, quiet places. On a few occasions I would look over my shoulder and find my cat Romeo blissing out to it too. Being able to share the enjoyment with him made it even more special.

I hope this mix helps the listener feel something like what Romeo and I felt in those days.

"Music has been a tremendous escape over the past year or so, trying to explore sounds I’d never given time to in the past but also digging a little deeper into my own collection. So in that spirit this mix pulls from both sides, tracks from as recent as early 2021 to records I’d brought over when I first moved from NZ. It’s all sandwiched between two original sketches that otherwise might not have found a home. 

The bulk of the mix was recorded in a single session in my home in late 2020. At the time of the original recording I wasn’t sure if it all worked together but listening back I think it’s a nice impression of where I was at. A bit scattered but generally all right. I worked in a handful of tracks I had since thought would be a good fit for the mix in April 2021 to stitch it all together." - @cralpatches

"I live in a new home, in a new city, in a new time. Tying together the fragmented memories of the many homes before this one, I’ve arrived at the notion that home is a sensorial abstraction. I’ve never had a physical structure (a house) as a home for more than a couple of years (moved around a lot ~ change > stasis) … So, to me, home isn’t structural stability, it’s stability in all the cliched ways; the people, the memories, a conceptual place that keeps your heart safe. And certainly, through everything that activates my senses and pulls me closer to those memories ~ music, smells, fleeting laughter, soft textiles, wet earth ~ I feel home. Not as a place of arrival, but a place of holding. 

I’ve been making playlists titled ‘Home 1, 2, 3, etc.’ over the past couple of years to keep track of shifting sensory portraits - to extract a feeling of home from temporary or unfamiliar settings. I was originally disturbed by the sonic diversity across my choices and wasn’t sure whether a self-respecting, DJ loving, mix fiend would endorse this collection in such an order; I’m happy to say that I think it all came together in the end. For me, home is the things, people and ideas you surround yourself with, rather than a specific place, so I wanted the mix to be a fairly honest reflection of the environment my partner and I have created since we moved to Australia a few years ago. Because of the coronavirus, it’s been a while since we’ve visited friends and family back in Scotland so it seemed necessary to include something from that part of my life and the perfect opportunity to play one of my favourite songs and EPs to come out this year: Lord of the Isles “Inheritance” from Whities 029. The track features a spoken word poem by Edinburgh poet Ellen Renton which was definitely the genesis and inspiration for the mix, even though it’s not the first track. It’s a really beautiful reflection on time, nature and the environment, and I think it’s such a perfect example of the way this year in particular has felt. It’s also nice to hear a familiar accent. 

The rest of the mix was pieced together with Ellen’s poem in mind, and is me trying my best to capture the quiet, comforting ambience of home during these strange, unsettling times. Though Dan (the other half of Low End Theorists) and I usually play a lot of Australian music on the Theory Therapy radio shows, it felt right to include some music from my adopted home, so there’s some local bits in there as well, including Aera’s track, which felt like the perfect accompaniment to “Inheritance”. "This mix was made when Melbourne was opening up again from the second lockdown and last year was drawing to a close. My external world was feeling pretty turbulent at this time - however the process of collecting and arranging this music amongst it all provided me with a meditative escape. As I gravitated back to it over the course of December, it helped me connect to myself and make sense of how everything was settling down around me.

Much of my listening is rooted in a relationship of sharing food with people that I love.  For me, a cooked meal is space for connection, whether that be amongst others or in solitude. 

This collection of sounds stems from scents of parsley stems, olive oil-y hands, fresh mussels and a gentle breeze. 

I would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people, who’s land this mix was recorded on, as well as the traditional owners of the lands of which the listeners of this mix are located.
