During the Capacity Building Workshop on Audio Engineering facilitated by Gert Müller, the participants from Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe wrote a song, recorded, mixed and mastered it. Here is the result of some great work beyond borders!

Music Crossroads - Gemozima

Gwarimba meaning ‘an African bowl full of treasures' is the collective name of eight of Mufakose's finest Afro-fusion musicians.
The group came second (2nd) after Bongo Love at the 2006 Local Festival thus qualifying for the National Finals where they came fourth. In 2007, Gwarimba made it all the way to the Music Crossroads IRF final hosted in Harare. Although the group did not win the exposure and experience that they gained made them work hard throughout the year so that when it came time for the next round of festivals they knew what they had to do to win.

Gwarimba took Malawian audiences by storm during the dusty August days at the Music Crossroads IRF 2008 final in Lilongwe. Back with a new repertoire, a more jivable sound and an incredible stage presence Gwarimba placed second winning a tour of Sweden and Austria where they will surely make their mark on the international scene.

02 IRF 2008 - Gwarimba - Bho-Bho-Bho

It was the mutual desire to play and preserve traditional Malawian music that led to Mafilika's formation in 2007. The different backgrounds and cultural roots of band members inspired Malfilika Band's musical style, which fuses of each band member's personal music tastes into a blend that mixes rock with roots and jazz with alternative each song packed with youthful energy and inspiration!

Mafilika represented Malawi at the Music Crossroads InterRegional Festival 2008 and although they didn't win they rocked audiences so hard that the Malawian people have sat up and are taking notice of this firey local talent.

01 Mwambo Wanga - Zabwino Za Chabe

Timbila Muzimba is a ten-piece orchestra made up of Mozambican Xylophones (Timbila) and African Percussion fused with electric bass, drums and saxophone.

It was formed in 1997 by a group of young Mozambican musicians and dancers from a neighborhood near the Mozambican capital called "Barrio Jardim", famous for its legendary Timbila Orchestras.

The name "Timbila Muzimba" reflects the elements of music and dance that create the identity of the orchestra; the sound of the "Timbila" and the movement of the "Muzimba"
(meaning body in the Chope language).

With their unique sound, their complex and magical use of polyrhythm, melody and dance they are the pride of Mozambique and in 1999 they stunned audiences and judges alike, winning the IRF competition with an incredible 148 out of 150 points!

Timbila Muzimba - Agua Doce (Sweet Water)

Winners of the Music Crossroads InterRegional festival 2010, Club Shanga is a vibrant seven-piece group from Zimbabwe playing a lively blend of afrocentric music enhanced by melodious female voices. The group calls it Afro Shangara as it derives from a traditional music style from their region, which also inspired their name, called Shangara.

Club Shanga's contemporary take on this gives them a distinctly Zimbabwean sound: danceable tunes played on modern and traditional instruments, strong vocals and a pulsating stage performance.

"It is the spirit of the song that brings us together. Come on! Let's dance to the rhythms of Africa: Shanga!" - they exclaim in one of their songs. Club Shanga's melodies are mainly sung in Shona, and throughout their music the band also promotes African cultural values and addresses social issues like HIV/AIDS.

Formed in 2007 in Marondera, at the heart of the Mashonaland East province of Zimbabwe, the group managed to go all the way to the Music Crossroads InterRegional Festival (IRF) 2009 in Zambia. They overcame missing the first place, by working hard to bring cohesion to their performance both in live shows and as a group. In July 2010, Club Shanga were rewarded for their efforts - winning the Music Crossroads Interregional Festival in Tanzania!

Two months later, having gathered momentum, the group also took home first prize in the 'Chibuku Road to Fame', a well-known music talent search show in Zimbabwe.
