„Mijikenda“ by Katoi Wa Tabaka and his Mijikenda Jazz Band marks the debut EP for this critically acclaimed ensemble of musicians and  ingeniously incorporates their Mijikenda fusion sound in four mesmerising songs. 

Katoi’s music is built on the polyrhythms that form the basis of the Mijikenda (the 9 tribes who call Kenya’s coast their home) groove. Although he loves to experiment and fuse with other modern styles like Jazz and Soul, the core “swung eighth” feeling is used in all his jams, and the music can be distinctly identified as Mijikenda. Keyboardist Ahmed brings in elements of the old coastal Taarab and infuses with it the Giriama style percussive excursions, often with great harmonic complexity. An amazing singer, bassist and composer in his own right, he has been vital in shaping the sound of Katoi wa Tabaka. The band’s percussionist Kazungu has his roots in traditional healing ceremonies and is known for his ability to make the drums speak. 

Katoi Wa Tabaka founded his Mijikenda Jazz Band to meet the need for carrying on the rich musical heritage from the coast of Kenya. As a youth elder in his clan and mentor for many young people and organisations he has become a driving force in promoting the art scene in his home town Malindi, advocating for more exposure and communal appreciation for local artists.

About Badenya Les Frères Coulibaly

Formed in Nuna, located in northwestern Burkina Faso, Badenya les Freres Coulibaly are part of a family of griots (musician storytellers, also known as jali and jeli in West Africa) and are members of the Bwa ethnic group.
Originally composed by the twins Lassina and Ousseni and known as les Freres Coulibaly, the group grew up to 8 members of the Coulibaly family and are called Badenya les Freres Coulibaly.
Lassina and Ousseni traveled for the first time to Europe in 1989. Invited by the “Atelier of Ethnomusicology” in Geneva to teach African percussion and dance. From there, they traveled to Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands and the UK. The public was instantly conquered by their natural ease, their radiation, which emanated from these young musicians freshly arrived from Burkina Faso. Their togetherness seemed perfect an inalterable, no disagreement seemed possible between them.
Invited to the Montreux Jazz Festival they performed under the artistic direction of Quincy Jones for an evening with Miles Davis. In reaction to this success, Claude Nobs and Quincy Jones invited the trio for 2 additional nights and they got to play with Georges Clinton, Georges Benson, Al Jarreau, Toots Thielmans, the rappers Kool Moe Dee, Mel Mellow and many others.
In 1993, Solo, Lassina and Ousseni released their first album Anka-Dia. They flew to Tunisia to teach percussion and the next year, flew to Spain, (Madrid and Barcelona) to be part of an African festival with Salif Keita, Cesaria Evora, Khaled and Johnny Clegg. Then les Freres Coulibaly were invited by Baaba Maal in Senegal for his tenth anniversary in the music world. There they met Peter Gabriel and shared several exceptional performances with Youssou N’Dour.
2000-2001: Release of the second album “Seniwe (Solidarity) with the entire family. The promotional tour for the album took the group to America, Israel, Malaysia, Germany and Austria. The following year they flew everywhere in Europe and in June, Carlos Santana invited the band to perform with him at the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich.
This track was selected by Putumayo World Music, a record label known for its compilation albums featuring various artists from different cultural backgrounds. "African Groove" is one of the albums in their collection, typically featuring a selection of tracks from African musicians or groups. These albums are often curated to showcase the diversity and richness of African music, ranging from traditional to contemporary genres such as Afrobeat, Highlife, Soukous, and more. "African Groove" would likely offer listeners a vibrant and rhythmic journey through the musical traditions of Africa. It's a great way for people to explore and appreciate the vast array of sounds.

Always loved the original version of Boroto since long time ago, and was playing this in a dj set and while transitioning to other tune realized that could be a good idea for an edit for more danceable purposes. Hope you enjoy this and appreciate a respectful representation of African music in an electronic context. Abakisimba (Let the lion remain a lion) are an ensemble of percussionists, poets, musicians and dancers from different ethnic backgrounds in Kenya. Around the rhythms of traditional drums they compose modern tunes full of soul, drive and wisdom, blending homegrown styles like Benga with Rap or Reggae, to create their unique sound. More than just grooves, their songs dive deep to lyrically explore topics like social consciousness, environmental responsibility and personal liberty. 

This self-titled album represents the group's comeback from their creative hiatus, with harmonious and energetic songs that inspire both the body and the mind - forever trotting along the borderlands between past and present. A catchy and rebellious record, that ultimately plants a seed in those receptive for its poetry of growth.

The streams of Givudemesi were a constant source of life. Except when they were dry. And they have been dry for a while. So we went away, hoping to find other streams, hoping to stay alive. But we died along the way, and now the music we carried is all that lives on.

Va yengo means those belonging to the homeland.

Inspired by the coastal sounds of Kenya, it is a lamentation, sung in Lurogori (maragoli), a luhya dialect. It speaks of the struggles that people of the homeland have gone through.
(The flute sound is actually a descant recorder, in case you're wondering :))
