« Study N°3 of the Opus 15 » of Joachim Andersen

This is my interpretation of Catherine Christer Hennix's classic drone piece The Electric Harpsichord. Not a duplicate or recreation of the original, but an attempt to honor the essence of the piece as I understand it.

We don't have (to my knowledge) any score or written notes from Hennix herself, but we know from Henry Flynt that she used the North Indian Multani scale, tuned according to Alain Danielou's "Ragas of Northern Indian Music", and this is what I used here. (I refer to it as a scale and not as a raga because it is not used in a way that conforms with raga performance practice, although near the beginning you can hear the canonic ascending and descending forms of the raga.)

Hennix performed this piece on a retuned Yamaha electronic keyboard using the harpsichord setting, accompanied by sine wave generators. I am using two Meng Qi Wingie2 resonators (with custom firmware for the tuning), one for the bass and melodic figurations and one to resonate similarly to sympathetic strings. The little 7-note arpeggios/glissandi are implemented using MIDI, but it is all triggered by hand. This recording captures a single session, performed in real time. All of the sounds issue from the two WIngies, except for the underlying sine-wave drone, which is implemented in Csound.

A partial list of the other gear used includes Soma Labs Cosmos looper and Chase Bliss CXM 1978 reverb.

Shinkei (1406-75) was a renowned renga poet and critic, best known for his two-part work "Sasamegoto" (Murmured Conversations). To find out more about this interesting and largely unknown poet-priest, I recommend reading Heart's Flower - The Life and Poetry of Shinkei by Esperanza Ramirez-Christensen.

Por isso a morte enobrece, veste de galas desconhecidas o pobre corpo absurdo. É que ali está um liberto, embora o não quisesse ser. É que ali não está um escravo, embora ele chorando perdesse a servidão. Como um rei cuja maior pompa é o seu nome de rei, e que pode ser risível como homem, mas como rei é superior, assim o morto pode ser disforme, mas é superior, porque a morte o libertou.

Fecho, cansado, as portas das minhas janelas, excluo o mundo e um momento tenho a liberdade. Amanhã voltarei a ser escravo; porém agora, só, sem necessidade de ninguém, receoso apenas que alguma voz ou presença venha interromper-me, tenho a minha pequena liberdade, os meus momentos de excelsis.

Na cadeira, aonde me recosto, esqueço a vida que me oprime. Não me dói senão ter-me doído.

Viver é ser outro. Nem sentir é possível se hoje se sente como ontem se sentiu: sentir hoje o mesmo que ontem não é sentir — é lembrar hoje o que se sentiu ontem, ser hoje o cadáver vivo do que ontem foi a vida perdida.

Apagar tudo do quadro de um dia para o outro, ser novo com cada nova madrugada, numa revirgindade perpétua da emoção — isto, e só isto, vale a pena ser ou ter, para ser ou ter o que imperfeitamente somos.

Esta madrugada é a primeira do mundo. Nunca esta cor rosa amarelecendo para branco quente pousou assim na face com que a casaria de oeste encara cheia de olhos vidrados o silêncio que vem na luz crescente. Nunca houve esta hora, nem esta luz, nem este meu ser. Amanhã o que for será outra coisa, e o que eu vir será visto por olhos recompostos, cheios de uma nova visão.

Altos montes da cidade! Grandes arquitecturas que as encostas íngremes seguram e engrandecem, resvalamentos de edifícios diversamente amontoados, que a luz tece de sombras e queimações — sois hoje, sois eu, porque vos vejo sois o que amanhece [?] e amo-vos da amurada como um navio que passa por outro navio e há saudades desconhecidas na passagem.
