An improvisation using the new Ruckers 1628 Harpsichord for iOS from Tempo Rubato and a cello part from Thumbjam.

Imagine taking a walk in the forest, just as the sun is coming up... You see the sunrise through the trees; you begin to walk among the majestic trunks; you hear the birds begin to wake. You walk on and suddenly... there's the dawn chorus.

Unfinished original piece lacking a great deal and in need of expansion and rearranging. Composed entirely in Notion for the iPad. Wave exported to Audioshare. Stereo width and reverb added with Stereo Designer and Altispace respectively via Audiobus. Final result recorded into Cubasis.

Mastered with Audio Mastering on the iPad.

Dawn Walk In The Forest

Imagine if you will, the bride making the final adjustments to her wedding gown and then processing majestically into the Church to eventually stand before her bridegroom who looks on with awe, wonder and love. That is what this piece is. :-) 

Dedicated to my beautiful and lovely wife of 25 years; God's gift to me as a picture of the relationship between Christ and the Church as described in Song of Songs.

Created entirely in Notion for the iPad, exported to Audioshare with no reverb. Reverb added with Altispace using Auria via IAA. A touch of Pro-Q and Pro-MB in Auria. Exported and lightly mastered in Audio Mastering. 

It needs more work - remixing, remastering - but since our 25th anniversary was in April 2015, this is long overdue for me to post. :-)

My Lady Carey's Dompe - Baroque Harpsichord

This is a reorchestration of a piece originally composed and rendered using Notion instruments. In this case, I transferred the iPad Notion file to the desktop version of Notion and then used the East/West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra instruments to reorchestrate it. The result is therefore rendered only using EWQLSO along with Notion desktop.

This is still a work in progress as I refine the EWQLSO instrument usage, so I may yet replace this file with another updated version in the future.

Glory - Psalm 96 - remix

I couldn't sleep one evening, so, I started reading a book on my iPhone on music theory I'd been meaning to get to. That motivated me to start composing this on the iPhone using Notion. What's unusual about it, and what prompted me to write it as I was pondering the theory text, is that it's in multiple time signatures: 5/8,  3/4, 4/4 and 6/8. See if you can tell where the transitions are as you listen :-)

I transferred the result to Notion for the iPad, completed most of the substance of it, and then transferred to Notion on the desktop where I finished it and orchestrated using EastWest QL Symphonic Orchestra. The solo cello and the basses are using mono setting. The arrangement is more like a small string ensemble with the basses in the center, and the solo cello off slightly to one side.

I used EWQLSO's built-in HDIR Cathedral 2.8 Strings reverb setting for the most part, but there is a *smidgen* of Waves IR-L on the total output to sew things together, and a very small amount of Waves L1 to bring the level up a couple of dB.

The title is taken from a phrase in Song of Songs 5:16 where in that section (5:10-16) the Church, pictured by the Shulamite describes the beloved, picturing Christ (C.f. with Revelation 21:2-9) The piece is ascribed to that phrase as a musical interpretation and contemplation.

Quick first jam of Modal CRAFT. Played on Alesis QX49 connected along with the CRAFT synth to an iConnectAUDIO4+, thence into Studio One Pro 3 running on a Macbook. (Could just as well have been into Auria Pro on iOS, but I had mapped the QX49 to MIDI CC values on the CRAFT in S1 already). 

Raw track - one take. Only thing added was some reverb in Studio One. That's it! :-)

Another little test ditty for the CRAFT synth. This time into Auria Pro on an iPad with some Timeless for delay, Saturn for saturation and some of Auria Pro's convolution reverb.

A CRAFT work

A rough rendering of Mozart's K201 - Symphony No. 29 in A Major - Allegro Moderato. 

This is not the renotated version of K201 I've been working on with Notion, but using the raw MIDI file from Classical Archives with one correction made at the beginning. I kept the tempo and dynamics of the original MIDI file in this version mostly intact, with a slight adjustment at the beginning of the dynamics again. 

This was mainly a test of Reaper's ability to auto-route a multi-instrument - both MIDI and audio. As a result, I have not spent any time on articulations or expression. The result is *only* using the legato voices from the loaded instruments, which is - of course - incorrect :-) but it's surprisingly good for all that. 

Some processing for EQ, balance, etc. with Waves plugins and some notch removal of bow noise with Reaper's own EQ. Also sent the output via an iConnectMIDI2+ to Pro-MB hosted by Auria Pro on an iPad via ReaInsert. Gave better fine tune control than C4 in the end.

The Miroslav 2 samples are indeed better at rendering this than the Miroslav 1 samples.  I did an M1 rendering and this was better. 

Next goal hopefully is to add proper keyswitched articulation.

K201 - rough rendering with Miroslav 2

A quick multitracked CRAFT jam.

Xkey and CRAFT plugged in to powered USB hub. Hub plugged in to iPad running the control app and MIDIBridge to route the Xkey to the CRAFT. Output sent to the inputs of a 6i6. 6i6 connected to a Linux desktop machine running Kubuntu with Wine wrapping Studio One Pro 2 to do the recording and mixing.

This *is* mixed a tad. The raspy lead is meant to be dirty sounding. :-)

CRAFT Jam3

This is an instrumentation and mix of the 1st movement - Presto - of Haydn's String Quartet Op 1 No. 4 in G major. I did this mainly as a test of VSL solo strings being driven directly from Notion.

Using the MIDI file graciously provided to Classical Archives by Steven E. Edwards, I imported that MIDI to Notion, cleaned up the score where needed and used the VSL SE Solo Strings to instrument. 

I then added dynamics, did some further mixing in Notion with Flux's Stereo Tool, Waves Trueverb (for early reflections and early cross-reflections), Melda EQ for EQ on each instrument and the master, a *hint* of saturation on the viola using, ahem :-D , Headcrusher (!) and then added specific hall characteristics from the National Center for Early Music in York in Waves IR-L using the IR file found at the link below. The reverb and room sizes were matched with the Trueverb at 1.3s and the reverb position was # 14. 

A touch of L1-Ultramaximizer was added to bring the final level up slightly.

Haydn String Quartet in G Major. Op 1 No. 4. Presto.

This is a *very* rough 1st mix test using the Versilian studios SSATBCB recorders in an exceedingly simplistic orchestration of Haydn's String Quartet in G Major. Op 1 No. 4. Presto.  I had already recently rendered the strings version of this, so I simply took the score and used a combination of the VSCO2 recorder instruments to render the same piece :-) Very raw as I say... 

I did nothing in terms of the dynamics, articulations or expression mappings in this. To do that, I need to create the mappings (prules files) for these Kontakt instruments in Notion. Nevertheless, I wanted to give the instruments an outing just as they are to see what they sounded like even without that. :-)

String Quartet in G Major. Op 1 No. 4. Presto instrumented with recorders

An automatically generated Fugue-like piece using Fugue machine on an iPad. 

MIDI recorded into Auria Pro, then driving the excellent Ruckers 1628 Historic Harpsichord app and violin, viola, cello and bass samples from the Virtual Playing Orchestra previously loaded under the Lyra player. Some Pro-C2, Pro-Q2 and Pro-MB in Auria Pro added to tighten things up a bit. AltiSpace used for the reverb.

A teensy bit of editing done on the MIDI (a couple of notes changed) on the harpsichord piece, and then the same MIDI used for the VVCB instruments with some range alteration to suit and also some octave folding and a teensy bit more editing to remove a couple of notes, change note lengths and velocities and add velocity curves. But, otherwise, pretty much straight out of Fugue Machine :-)

HarpsiFugue

I have been experimenting recently with the lovely Rinascimento library from Fluffy Audio. Here's an interpretation of Telemann's TafelMusik Quartet in D minor - Andante.

This is pretty much a raw import into Notion from the Classical Archives MIDI file. No rules were applied, so, it's whatever single voice is set for each instrument - and I didn't make any changes to the dynamics either - which ought at least to be done in a later version. 

In spite of that it demonstrates what's possible with this library even without a lot of processing.

Using the Traversiere, Dulciana, Harpsichord and Viola Da Gamba instruments from the library. 

Also putting some newer Waves plugins to the test in a complete piece, including Scheps Omni Channel - one per instrument - and Waves Abbey Road Mastering. Also some IR-L for reverb set in the Glazunov concert hall,  and some L1 for level adjustment at the end.
