Living in Itapetininga, Sao Paulo's countryside, Yuri Souza is a spiritually curious DJ and producer that since his childhood have pursued sensory perception with flavors, smells, textures and sounds. As music could not be left out, his musical perception received considerable influence from the rhythmic ceremonies of his mother Afro-Brazilian matrix's temple. From all this tangle, Yabiru emerges, his musical alter ego that transits the undiscovered land in Yuri’s vast sonic world, always seeking mind expansion as true spiritual freedom. In addition, Yuri has been developing and managing 'SENSO', a platform of psychedelic, artistic and cultural content; a world within other worlds.

For this 202th edition Yabiru tried to walk through different areas of the mind, also from space, connecting us through a psychedelic compilation of sounds, bringing rhythm to multi-dimensional events. The 101-minutes mixtape sounds roughly outlandish for its dynamics but then forgets about genres altogether, finding some psychedelic flux which this compilation generously spotlights alongside tremendous voices and quotes; ambitious and satisfying.

I originally thought this recording was lost but a couple of weeks ago it landed back with me. There was a definite magic in the air for this set, staged at a particularly lush festival site full of the best of the best, peak festival, the Sunday evening.

This set is dedicated to my brother and dear mentor Daniel Webber who left us a few days before the festival, his spirit lives in this one x

This is my set from Saturday afternoon at Rainbow Serpent . It was my 3rd year to play the festival and the first time playing in the day! I decided to play with some lighter moods and build a more colourful story over the hour. Ahh the live set, the great test of vulnerability, surrender and ego. After DJing for so many years committing to performing only my own compositions on the fly all summer has brought a whole new level of love and appreciation for my art and performance, I could write paragraphs on it but will leave you with this recording. Thanks to everyone who danced at the shows and stuck around for the weird interludes and abstract openings 😉 ! This was my favourite recording from the summer, at Strawberry Fields Festival, In my eyes the perfect setting for my music.

🇮🇹 Some words about the mix from Marco 🇮🇹

The mixtape faces the mediterranean coasts of the southern Italy, the place where I was born and where now I’m based. It’s a mix of sounds, musics and tunes coming from that area, but it’s also a time-travel through the Arabic, Persian and African dominations and their musical influences - typical all over the southern due to the Italy's geographic position in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. Also Greek and Slavic migration created new ethic group since the 15th century, such as Arbëreshë, the Albanians of Italy. 

My home country (Salento) was part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1816-1861), the largest state of Italy before the unification, it was formed as a union of the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of Naples. Here life and music are rich in folklore, religion, philosophy and esotericism. Sun makes very hot summers and creates human warmth and rare chemistries. Sea does everything else! 

The traditional southern Italian music is Tarantella, accompanied by tambourines. It’s connected within the Tarantism, a sort of ritual - with ancient roots in the Greek mythology - during which an hysterical and agitated victim of a tarantula spider bite had to start a frenetic dance with appropriate music to be revived and treated. Music transported the victim in a 'trance' until exhaustion and it appeared to be the only way of combating that strange disease. Another musical tradition in Southern Italy is the zampogna, a form of bagpipe originally played by the shepherds during the farm works.
