The South London based Church imprint continue their output of quality house and techno music with the next instalment of their white label series from neighbour Laurence Guy. According to his bio, Laurence was “raised by strippers in the dressing room of a Chicago lapdancing club with only a stack of Prince records for company.” While we can’t confirm that, the maker of punchy house music has certainly got our attention. Taken from his upcoming EP of the same name, i-D exclusively share Kojak. The smooth summertime jam eases you in with the gentlest of percussion, synth whirs and chimes, before drums and blissfully distorted bass holds your hand all the way to groove town. Press play.

Marquis Hawkes marks his fifth release for Aus with another classy 2 tracker titled, 'The Phoenix' (Part 1 and Part 2). The Phoenix follows up summer hit 'The Basement Is Burning' which saw Midland, The Black Madonna and Gerd Janson all supporting at festivals worldwide.

The Phoenix is two takes on one concept. 

Part One takes the Disco and House amalgam which Marquis has developed in recent times to it’s logical conclusion, perfectly walking the tightrope between joyous abandon and classy depth, and giving DJs the perfect weapon for all floors, from sweaty basements right the way through to much bigger dancefloors. 

Part Two then flips the program with the same raw materials and sets up the perfect shot, directed at a big room House/Techno crossover, building on the foundations laid by the Detroit techno originators by infusing contemporary production values and a more modern twist.

The Phoenix is something of a landmark EP for Marquis Hawkes, once again redefining his sound. We can't wait to hear what he does next.

As of late, France has been a hotbed for up-and-coming house and disco labels, releasing some of the grooviest tunes pumped out on dance floors across the globe. Newly minted Groovence is no exception to this, bringing forth their their first label release with a various artists compilation that will leave your head buzzing, heart melting and feet stomping. VA releases can be hit or miss but « The Cosmic Groove EP' lives up to its name with funky, spaced out cuts that will have you calling Houston and assuring them that there is no problem.

Based out of Paris, the vinyl-only label has been releasing an 'invite' series of hour long sets to showcase their tastes, with guests as Luvless ( Rose Records, Sleazy Beats recordings), Ethyène ( Moonrise Hill Material, Kolour LTD), Tour Maubourg (Pont-Neuf Records) and Twice Movement (Groovence) ; each sporting their own quality tracks on the label premiere.

Pogo House ‘Big Boss Man’ Martin Depp fires out release 193 in the Pogo catalogue with the Take Control EP. 
Originally a vinyl release in 2017, the Take Control 4 track EP finally lands on digital format. First up, the title track Take Control consists of melodic keys alongside a big elastic bassline. The oldskool atmospheric pads create a nice sense of suspense and give off a real sense of nostalgia as well as the amen breaks on the breakdown.   

Mike Sharon picks up the remix for Track 2 and brings a deeper and more mellow vibe to proceedings with highly-strung percussion arrangements and cool piano keys throughout. 

Track 3 is titled ’Soulmates’ and Martin Depp demonstrates a deeper vibe again with some iconic, but subtle oldskool sampling which fits snuggly with the vibe of the track. One for the Deep House heads out there with some building soft strings that wouldn’t go amiss in an LTJ Bukem track from the famous Logical Progression days.     

For the final track on this release, Marc Cotterell drops a ‘Plastik Vibe’ remix of ‘Soulmates’ and does away with the deep chilled mood created from Martin Depp’s Original. Fine-tuned percussion with tough heavyweight kicks, a nice dubby bassline with a moody Darkside breakdown, leave you in absolutely no doubt where Marc goes with this.

He has been behind a string of brilliant releases, an artist who has a real classic house feel but with a production touch which sounds perfect for 2019. His tracks are designed for the club but with enough class for repeated home listening.
