20 Years Of Freerange - 5 x Vinyl Box Set LP

June 2016 sees Freerange Records celebrate 20 years at the top. The label, run by Jamie ‘Jimpster’ Odell and Tom Roberts, is marking the occasion with the summer release of a carefully curated and lovingly assembled 20 track, five vinyl box set featuring exclusive new music from associates old and new, as well as with a worldwide events series.

Over the last two decades, generations of DJs and dancers have gotten down to the Freerange sound. Initially that was a mix of sample-heavy productions incorporating live musicians, flirtations with the broken beat sound and some ground breaking fidget house cuts from Switch and Trevor Loveys. Then, and most enduringly, the label settled into a rich vein of deep house. Shur-I-Kan, Kirk Degiorgio, Milton Jackson, Trackheadz, Stimming as well as Jimpster ushered in this most recent chapter, and in turn the label has helped make household names of many more previously unknown talents from Detroit Swindle to Manuel Tur, Andre Lodemann to Tony Lionni. Wherever you look amongst the hundreds of EP and LP releases on Freerange, you will find nuance and evolution, dance floor sensibility and genuine emotional impact.

That same sense of timelessness characterises this new compilation, which is packed with great music from the likes of KiNK, Pittsburgh Track Authority, Kuniyuki, Kito Jempere, Soul of Hex, Clavis, Detroit Swindle, and of course Jimpster himself, as well as a whole host of other Freerange regulars. There are many highlights across the 20 track package including a warm and skipping house cut from Bulgarian live specialist KiNK, a typically slow burning and beautifully arcing epic from Andre Lodemann and spaced out jack tracks from classically inclined Liverpudlian Tony Lionni.

Big name stars like Detroit Swindle return in style with a robust and acid laced banger, the ever-underrated Milton Jackson builds something melodically magical and Pittsburgh Track Authority layer up majestic string stabs and rubbery bass into soul infused future music. Jimpster himself bolsters the whole package both solo and with Luv Jam as well as remixing Tim Toh, and on each occasion proves why he is one of the pivotal figures of the UK deep house scene.

Few labels make it to twenty releases let alone twenty years strong. Often doing so without making any real fuss, now is the time that Freerange Records deserves its time in the spotlight, and this compilation more than proves that.

Tilly Jam – number one. An elegantly arranged announcement of where it’s at. A bang of a label debut, not unlike the sound of a bub bottle hitting the hull. Three times the unmistakeable message where this is heading: House, House, House! And obviously the man Till von Sein himself on the keys and knobs.
You’ll find the A side starting off rather cooled down, but as soon as von Sein keys in the bass, the groove DNA of this heart and hip warming opener is set. Filtered string-sequences, silky smooth sampling in the break and vocals that resolve even the last fraction of doubt: We are indeed in “Heaven”.
“Ambush 77” on B1 is letting go of all remaining hold backs and activates the peaktime hooter several times. A funked up trigger for loss of control on the floor, sustained by a luscious kick, a colossal bassline and percussive priming.
B2 is backing down just a little bit into understatement. After an intro of spoken words, the arrangement of “Part Of The Solution” consolidates into a groove of thick bassdrums, slightly distorted, Acid implying synths and – in contrast – tenderly installed synthie-miniatures.

Mireia Records is ecstatic to welcome Casino Times with “Rush/Kawai” plus three captivating remixes by Conga Fever, Rigopolar and Filburt. Casino Times aka Nicholas Church and Joseph Spencer from London have been betting against the house for close to 10 years already, winning big with releases on Wolf Music, Needwant, Omena and their own Casino Edits label. The pair also hosts the radio Show “What’s My Derivative?” on Bloop Radio.
Since Mireia Record’s big cheeses RSS Disco have been keen to gamble with the Time’s music, routinely lighting up dancefloors with it, a loose connection and mutual admiration formed over the years and eventually lead to this fine record here.
Casino Times demonstrate their cunning yet natural and flowing sound with two originals :
“Rush” and “Kawai”. Both tracks are a proper trip of its own, psychedelic pinball machines that’ll catapult you to the further edges of the known sphere. An arpeggiated melody line leads the “Rush”, while a rock solid foundation of hard hitting drums keep you steady. The melody filters into acidic fringes and a strange voice guides the
traveler to the core of this outer-body experience.

The MUSHROOM HOUSE compilation is a collection of balearic, afro and cosmic tracks that have been released on Toy Tonics EPs over the last 5 years. Original tracks and remixes by friends of the label: Auntie Flo, Rebolledo, Hyenah, Daniel Avery, WhoMadeWho & DJ Koze, Munk … and there is also legendary italian cosmic DJ Baldelli featured. 
All these tracks are exclusively produced for Toy Tonics. A few had been already released before on Gomma records. The now sleeping indie-electronica label that was the „mother“ of Toy Tonics. It’s fun to see that these tracks seem not to get old. They sound still fresh and ace. Like the DJ Koze remix of WhoMadeWho or Munk’s Nigerian Jam. Now they all come together on double vinyl. MIMS is hyped to premiere an epic new remix of Fred Everything's sought after house hit "Here (Now)" by the king of space disco himself, Prins Thomas.

A 10-minute space disco journey as only Prins Thomas can deliver, his "Diskomiks" incorporates elements from both the original 2003 version and Fred's 2020 update.

Back in 2003, nearly 20 years ago now, Fred Everything released 2 albums  on Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision, alongside a heap of singles and remixes. In between those albums, he released a single called 'Over You'. Unexpectedly, the b-side, "Here (Now)" turned into a bit of a hit!  

One fan was Ian Pooley, who always told Fred it was the his best track ever. And as recent as 2019, Ian picked it for a feature in Telekom Electronic Beats about his top 5 B-Side tracks, overnight boosting the Discogs price for the original EP to 100 EU.

Fred felt inspired to dig out the song from his archives. Finding all the original stems he couldn't resist putting a new spin on the song himself. But he wasn't done there and could see it being a good opportunity for reinterpretation. 

Fred tells us, "when I dug out this project, I instantly thought of Prins Thomas as I’m a big fan of his and could hear his cosmic touch on this. It helped that I was working with him on another alias project for his label at the same time. He felt bad that the remix was 10 mins long but I embraced that. It’s a rarity these days for music to really take its time to live and breath. Extremely pleased with the result!"

Digital is out later this week  but you can order the vinyl from a number of stores now.
