A brilliant new cut from Raffy Bushman, the London-based pianist and composer, whose debut EP last year, 'Look Up', certainly caught our attention and found a home on many respectable playlists too.

Raffy's spirited and melodic piano playing is a joy to hear on "Abraham". Supported by Nubiyan Twist's Finn Booth on drums and Mikele Montolli, hailing from Verona via Graz, on bass. 

Raffy gained praise and recognition far afield for his direction of Unit 31,  a music and visual arts collective of serious impact in London. He also founded the NuShape Orchestra, collaborating with Nubiya Brandon on 'All Kinds of Limbo' a transportative musical VR experience at The National Theatre.

After an impressive debut last year, Raffy looks set to go from strength to strength, from all indications.

In the summer of 2012, Onra & Lexis joined forces to tackle a project based on a music period they both love so much. That brief period from approximately ’93 to ’96: the New Jack Swing sound got dated and soulful club music became much closer to the Hip-Hop productions of the time to create this Urban R’n’B type of music.

We simply call this era the “Throw Em’ Up” period in reference to the way that everyone in clubs and videos was vibin’ to these tracks: just throw up both your arms and wave them around nonchalantly (if possible with a champagne glass). The selection rules we followed for Vol. 2 are simple: #1: Soul artists featuring MC’s are ok, but not the other way around. #2: All of the picks have to pass the “throw em’ up” dance test, which means: no New Jack Swing stuff, no Timbaland because although Timbo is a genius it’s really a different kind of sound which shaped the late 90′s / early 2000′s sound.

So after the huge success of Throw Em’ Up vol.1 we decided we had to do it again because there are just so many amazing tracks that never really made it big that deserve to be heard!

So after weeks of obsessive research, the mix was recorded live in one take. We made sure to stay under 80 minutes so you can burn it to a CD and take it on the road with you. Vol.2 definitely goes a little bit deeper in the archives of 90′s R&B: we pulled out tons of slept-on tracks, rare versions and remixes.

After playing his video cover of Stevie Wonder’s "Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing" about a million times over, I decided to do an edit so I could run it on the dancefloor at our monthly party, The GOODS here in Montreal. I hope you enjoy it."

Today’s episode is a special one. We’re having a discussion with Alex Coles, author of a brand-new book that charts the history and impact of jazz fusion, using key songs to trace its 50-year evolution and contributions to Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronic music and more.

The central idea from the book that really stood out to me is that Fusion should be viewed as a “process” rather than a genre. In the last 50 years, this process of exploration and collaboration between genres, cultures, generations and production techniques has contributed so much to contemporary music.

Hard to believe I started this series 12 years ago. Time moves so fast, doesn’t it?

At first, it was a project meant to celebrate the indescribable feeling of making it through another lonnnng Montreal winter. Then, it became a form of catharsis for me to grieve the memory of my mom, who passed away a few years ago now. I’ve thought a few times that this project might have run its course, but as I got a lot of very kind feedback from listeners, I think it has come to mean something for them too. Hopefully, it does to you too.

So here we are with another selection of songs to heal, uplift, cry, love and laugh.

After a 12 episode run of Back 2 U monthly episodes, Lexis returns and welcomes another one of his Montreal friends for another music hangout to share records and the personal back stories that surround them.

Icky Magdala is a Montreal-based DJ and producer with a career spanning nearly two decades. Originating from the city’s underground scene, she finds refuge in sound system culture. Drawing upon a deep affection for different subgenres—with heavy emphasis on bass and drum lines—the avid vinyl records collector navigates through dub, jungle, drum & bass, hip hop, and acid techno. This has led her to perform at notable local and international venues and festivals, including Mutek Festival, Under Pressure Festival, The Lot Radio in NYC, and numerous encounters with the Dub-Stuy crew, to name a few. 

When she isn’t DJing, playing live sets or curating events, Icky Magdala continues to expand her sonic vision with her project Bridges to Dub. Her mission: spreading the music and good vibes.

Born out of the vibrant Naples funk and disco underground, The Funkin’ Machine is a five-piece powerhouse blending Mediterranean rhythms with vintage cosmic grooves.

Formed in 2020 by vocalist and keyboardist Andres Balbucea, alongside guitarist Alessio Pignorio, drummer Andrea De Fazio, bassist Roberto Porzio, and percussionist Paolo Bianconcini, the group has deep roots in Italy’s modern funk scene, with ties to acts like Mystic Jungle, Nu Genea, and Parbleu. After debuting on Periodica’s Seri Pegaso label, they’ve now joined the Star Creature family for their upcoming LP.

Ruby Rushton return with cinematic new single “Walk to Regio's”, the lead single from the London UK jazz quartet’s highly anticipated 'Legacy!' album on 22a Records.

As a bandleader, flautist, saxophonist, producer, DJ and label boss, Tenderlonious has earned his polymath stripes. On "Walk to Regio's", Ed takes inspiration from multi-talented legend Isaac Hayes, in particular his ‘Shaft’ soundtrack. 

“I’ve always been obsessed with film music and it’s played a key role in my approach to composition. Issac Hayes’s ‘Shaft’ soundtrack is one of my favourites and has had a big influence on my music over the years. “Walk to Regio’s” is my salute to Issac Hayes and is a nod to one of the coolest films ever made!”

Ruby Rushton trade the hustle and bustle of 1970s Harlem for the restless, ever-shifting energy of contemporary South London. A hypnotic piano motif sets the tone, locking into a deep groove laced with crisp horns and percussive layers. The rhythm section stays tight and purposeful, giving space for quick bursts of improvisation - each solo a snapshot of raw, soulful musicianship. It all circles back to that familiar refrain, closing with a flourish that feels both grounded and soaring.

'Legacy!' marks the fifth full length outing from the Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne led group who helped pave the way for the recent wave of jazz that has ignited the capital and enchanted the world. 

“Walk to Regio's” is released across all digital platforms on 31st July and you can pre-order ‘Legacy!’ on LP / CD / download on this day as well.

This mix is a humble tribute to the late Ziad Rahbani, the great Lebanese composer, pianist, playwright, and pioneer of Fusion and Oriental Jazz. His voice, raw and unfiltered, spoke truth to power and captured the soul of Lebanon.

You’ll hear glimpses of his vast legacy — music and interview excerpts where he reflects on life, politics, creativity, and love. No mix could ever fully capture his impact, but this is my way of honoring it.

I grew up on my parents’ music, rushing home from school to play funk, disco, hip hop, and Arabic tapes on a Sony CFD-V7 Boombox. One day, my father gave me Houdou’ Nisbi — a cassette I played endlessly. It was unlike anything else: emotional, layered, and deeply rooted in Lebanon’s cultural rhythm.
That’s the power of Ziad — his music holds memory, movement, and meaning.

Australian-based artist L Lewis is back with a new record, Intervals, out now on Bathtub Music. The 12" fuses jazz improvisation with warm electronics and subtle rhythmic shifts, a continuation of the sounds heard on his debut.

He ran the hugely influential INBEAT record store for over 20 years which was the central hub for so many local DJ’s and music heads rolling through town. I remember the 1st time I heard of Lonnie Liston Smith; it was through the album credits of Jay-Z’s “Reasonable Doubt”. I’ve always been more intrigued with production rather than lyrics but still, I didn’t really catch on to his work until later on when I saw a video of Ski Beatz where he was explaining how he made “Dead Presidents“. That’s when I realized I had to dig deeper into LLS’ catalogue, especially as a young beat producer at the time.

Even since then, Lonnie Liston Smith has captured & mystified my ears with his music. Whether on the solo tip or with his Cosmic Echoes, LLS’ compositions are filled with funky rhythms, peaceful messages, celestial rhodes solos and timeless rhythms. He was, and still is a true visionary, and I’ll always feel like he was way ahead of his time.

For this mix, I selected some of my ultimate cuts, tracks that helped me escape from reality, travel to outer realms & meditate on my past/current/future endeavours.

2016 just saw another Legend pass away. Kashif Saleem, previously known as Michael Jones, was one of the most prolific producers in the 1980's, producing for acts such as Melba Moore, Evelyn Champagne King, Withney Houston, Howard Johnson and George Benson, just to name a few.

On a personal note, Kashif's music is the ultimate reason why I am the Dj that I aspire to be - the 1st time I heard "I Just Got To Have You (Lover Turn Me On) was one of the greatest musical discovery, if not the greatest, that I encountered - that Moog Bass, those guitar licks, that snare variation on the 8th, the arrangements, the lyrics. I was captivated. Forever. Today, I'm even more convinced that Kashif Changed My Life. Rest In Power Kashif Saleem.

Founding member of EPMD and Def Squad, Erick Sermon aka the Green Eyed Bandit is a legendary Producer & MC from Brentwood, Long Island. In my opinion he’s always been the funkiest producer on the East Coast. Through his records, I became interested in P-Funk, Zapp, Johnny Guitar Watson, to name a few.

On this tribute mix I wanted to pay homage to the 3 main phases of his career. The explosion of EPMD in the Golden Era, his productions for Redman and K-Solo. He made countless remixes, productions, appearances on classic and more slept-on 90’s Rap & R&B joints. The early 2000’s changed production styles slightly but the funk & soul was always there as evident on his more recent solo work like the Marvin Gaye sampling “Just Like Music”

Sometimes you produce a track with nothing but a dancefloor and a good sound system in mind. “Twelve Inch Jams” is offering you just that - strictly two A side tunes for the floor cut at 45 revolutions per minute. Jazz & Milk pays tribute to this classy release format with their new 12” vinyl series. Each record comes in a hand silk-screened printed and stamped sleeve! The series starts off with members of the label family - Vienna’s Sam Irl and the man behind Jazz & Milk, Dusty. The two not only share a good friendship, but also the love for raw and sample-based house music tunes produced on the MPC. “Pick Up The Pieces” is driven by a rough bass drum, filthy dub vocal samples, harmonic synth chords and a bassline that makes you bounce. On the flipside, “Drift” has a rather moody vibe but nonetheless dancefloor potential. The track is a beautiful collage piece consisting of plenty sample fragments which doesn’t fail to pull you in its spell like a drift through otherworldly spheres... It's been 10 years since the birth of Music Is My Sanctuary, and what a 10 years it’s been! Started in 2007 by Alexis Charpentier aka DJ Lexis in Montreal, Canada, Music Is My Sanctuary has been dedicated to discovering and presenting music often overlooked by mainstream music channels through articles, interviews, radio shows, DJ mixes, and events. 

The "10th Anniversary Compilation: Never Stop Digging" is an eclectic collection featuring 17 unreleased tracks from artists who all share the same vision and passion, and who represent the mentality and styles that Music Is My Sanctuary works to push forward. 

Side A focuses on some more floor-oriented grooves from artists who are known for both producing and DJing. Side B (kicked off by the ever-mysterious Clutchy Hopkins) is dedicated to the Hip Hop and Funk heads featuring artists who have all put their own unique spin on genres that have come before. Consider this a Future Classics affair! 

This project is a collaboration with 101 Apparel, who are providing the "Never Stop Digging" T-shirts which can be purchased from 101 Apparel directly. Both the T-shirt and cassette were designed by Montreal's Nik Brovkin. The official Music Is My Sanctuary 10th Anniversary celebration was held at Montreal’s Centre Phi, promoted and broadcasted live by Boiler Room. A big thank you goes out to the artists who provided tracks for this compilation, and to all artists who keep creating such fantastic music for us to share and enjoy. Without you there would be no us, and for this we can’t thank you enough!

"Raphael Saadiq is the Neo Soul and R&B producer, arranger and songwriter of a generation, yet criminally unsung. I simply wanted to shine a light on known, and some unknown, involvement of his in music over the years, from uptempo Soul of his own to his signature Two Step sound. 

Raphael's solo work needs no introduction, having redefined his sound over the years, remaining consistently current without loosing his era-defining, Soulaquarian-Neo-Soul feel. But his work with others artists is fascinating, linch-pinning so many killer R&B records whilst remaining forever background and humble.

There is a fascinating story told by Solange Knowles, of a misplaced Saadiq beat CD, which eventually lead to the makings, Grammy Award winning, Cranes In The Sky (Song Exploder, 2017). The Grammy captures Raphael’s nature perfectly, by not attending and opting out of the limelight.

In an age of pop superstars and egos, it’s heartwarming seeing someone who’s intrinsic to the music we love, so down to earth. For the heads, there is an obvious exemption of any Ummah records, of which Raphael was an occasional member, however with exact individual involvement on each Ummah record such a grey area, that tribute mix alone is best saved for another time..."

Tribute to RAPHAEL SAADIQ - Selected by Russ Ryan

To coincide with the launch of the documentary celebrating the history of the legendary Mo' Wax Records, we asked one of our favourite Montreal DJs, Phil Larochelle, to dive into the back catalogue and record a session consisting of his all-time favourites. 

The imprint founded in 1992 by James Lavelle was home to the some of the forward-thinking genre-defying beats. From DJ Krush to DJ Shadow, Motorbass to Unkle, the label was a melting-pot of Jazz, Hip Hop, Breaks, Trip Hop, Electronica and whatever else artists felt like putting on a slice of wax.

Tribute to MO' WAX RECORDS - Selected by Phil Larochelle

Welcome to this week’s episode of the Music Is My Sanctuary interviews. Our 5th guest is New York avant-garde / experimental composer Vito Ricci.

The incredible people behind the Music From Memory label released a compilation of his work titled “I Was Crossing A Bridge”, some of which had never even been released. His music went from largely overlooked (outside of the New York theatre scene) to later being an obscure record that collectors traded for hundreds of dollars previously to become suddenly widely available for a new generation and be critically acclaimed by some of the finest music media platforms.

Vito’s music is absolutely unique, introspective, cinematic. Sometimes it’s dark, sometimes it has humour. It’s experimental and minimal but always has a groove in there too.

We spoke about his inspirations, interdisciplinary music work and approach to musical experimentation.

From Black Madonna to DJ Artwork, DJ Harvey to Detroit Swindle, Gerd Janson, Busy P to Moodyman and Honey Dijon. The tracks are getting played everywhere. 

So it makes sense to come up with some reworks of the album tracks.

On the 2nd remix EP, Sworn Virgins from DeeWee, Art of Tones and Rahaan made new versions.. and as the “Delirio Italiano” track is getting so much love Kapote made an alternative version. 

But here is a taste of Art of Tones' stellar revision.

Exclusive Premiere: Kapote "Jaas Func Haus" (Art Of Tones Remix)

Gin Tonic Orchestra, a brand new band out of St. Etienne (France), deliver the second release on Mother Tongue records.

The brainchild of keyboard player and producer Victor Dijoud - also known as Kaffe Crème - and drummer Leo Puccio, alongside multiple collaborators both in their studio and stage incarnations, Gin Tonic Orchestra is a collective of young talents, gathering their musical inspiration from future jazz, broken beat and latin vibes.

The Stefania EP - a tribute to their native city - is the band’s debut recording showcasing compositions such as “Hands On The Drums”, a driven yet subtle soulful track coloured with jazzy cymbals and lush harmonies and “Get A Umbaye”, where Afro-latin grooves are juxtaposed against elements of funk and ethereal flute solos, reminiscent of the London and New York acid jazz era.

UK legendary keyboard player and producer Kaidi Tatham appears on track two of side A with a stunning remix of “Hands On The Drums” mixed by none other than Eric Lau, giving the track a new life with a heavy broken beat feel, filled with syncopated riffs and intricate synth solos.

Today's premiere comes in the summer-ready shape of Blundetto's "Fly High". Perfect for hot & hazy dreamy days.

Ten years had passed since Blundetto's debut 'Bad Bad Things’, so he's celebrating a decade by reviving the same state of mind.   This time with additional collaborations, atmospheres, and musical styles. 

The old circle of friends remains (Hindi Zahra, General Electrics & Chico Mann) and this first slice into newer more sophisticated openings of Blundetto, comes in the offering of 'Fly High' featuring Hindi Zahra on vocals.  

This first single from his LP 'Good Good Things' due in June, shows us once again that Blundetto's knack for blissed out production is ever present, along with the of excitement that more good good things are in store.

MIMS is excited to premiere the romantic rhythms and sounds of "Nasnusa" by Sababa 5. A modern take on Mizrahi music sung by Tokyo, Japanese hailing performer, Yurika, that we've just fallen completely in love with.

If you don’t know Sababa 5 yet, you’re definitely missing out on one of the hottest bands on the Tel Aviv music scene.

Following their very popular debut release ‘Crossroad of Love’, Sababa 5 and vocalist Yurika are back on the exclusive Middle Eastern Grooves with their newest double-sided 7” collaboration titled ‘Tokyo Midnight’. The record is a dazzling encounter of cultures, inspired by the funky and exotic melodies of Sababa 5 and the resplendent Japanese words of Yurika.

On the B-side, "Nasnusa", a beautiful guitar solo continues into a captivating rhythm inspired by traditional Mizrahi music. Yurika’s delicate vocals evoke a love story; a couple watches the sunset as the gates to a new world are opening. As "Nasnusa" fades into the light, her lover recalls her beauty and expresses fondness over the wonderful time they spent together.

Sababa 5’s musical style has been influenced by all its members and is in continuous evolution, though always remaining very groove-centric. The sound is mainly based in surf rock and retro funk, especially Arabic folk and funk music from the ‘60s and the ‘70s and artists from that period, such as the legendary Aris San.

MIMS is excited to premiere this absolutely luscious soul jam from the Solqlap Budapest collective in collaboration with singer/producer Emmavie. Perfect vibes for this early Autumn.

Seven piece live band/producer/DJ collective, Solqlap Budapest, teams up with one of London’s most exciting rising vocalists and producers, Emmavie, to deliver their brand new single, “Fairy Tale”. This fresh and soulful number is reminiscent of the golden era of neo soul but tinged with the contemporary stylings of future R&B. 

“Fairy Tale” kicks in with no hesitation. Starting with a boom bap groove reminding us of the best of 90’s hip hop, Emmavie soon follows with her beautiful vocals taking us to a magical musical journey. Recorded in one live take and mixed by multi Latin Grammy winner Balazs Robert ‘Gizmoo’ and mastered by multi Grammy and platinum award winner Darcy Proper, Fairy Tale is the first single off a three song EP recorded in Amsterdam’s Wisseloord House Of Music and soon to be released on vinyl via Noord Records.

Solqlap Budapest is a seven piece instrumental hip hop ensemble combining musicians, DJ's and producers from the heart of Hungary. Founded in Budapest in 2010, the group quickly became a significant input of the buzzing local scene. This is thanks to an ongoing series of live performances, organizing events and frequent collaborations with local and international MC's and singers (i.e. Corey James Gray fka iLLspokinn, Emmavie, Sarah-Jane, Wayne Snow, Call Me Unique, Sena, Saiid and more).

Emmavie is a singer/songwriter and producer. She specialises in what she describes as "limitless soulful future R&B". Her music is an amalgamation of 90s R&B and her love for digital audio experimentation.

MIMS is excited to premiere a brand new remix by Bostonian-come-Colombian producer, BOSQ, increasingly a favourite of ours. As he turns his hand to a classic slice of Colombian tropicalia by Elia y Elizabeth for Razor-N-Tape Reserve.

On this four-track EP, RNT takes a trip south with some fresh modern takes on a pair of Colombian tropicalia classics from the 1970s! Sisters Elia and Elizabeth Fleta recorded some of the most beloved rare groove from Baranquilla’s early-70s period, and when Jaime Tuiran (Vagabundo Club Social) brought the project to label owners Aaron Dae and JKriv, they jumped at the opportunity to work with such rarefied source material.

Our pick of the EP, BOSQ has transformed "Soy Una Nube into an uptempo soul banger. Otherwise, Demi Riquisimo, Yuksek and Baranquilla natives Vagabundo Club Social take on the legendary "Alegría" cut. 

The record is pressed in the signature gold color of Baranquilla, and is as vibrant as the city’s streets during its renowned Carnaval! Plus it comes shrink-wrapped with with it’s own secret treasure inside: a fresh new pressing of the original songs on heavyweight 7” wax - alone worth the price of admission.
