Ahead of Saturday’s Dane’s Dance Emporium x Voyage Funktastique session this Saturday at Performance Works, we asked Walla P to contribute a mix to our Pacific Spirit series. 

As predicted, he did not disappoint! In our opinion (and many others) Walla P is one of the purest and most talented DJs in the funk, disco, and boogie sphere, and we can’t wait to see him do his thing here in Vancouver for the first time.

Here are a few words about his mix from the man himself…

“For this guest mix, I got inspired by listening to some of the previous mixes, lots of atmospheric/ambient grooves from records that came out over the last decade or so. Lots of stuff you don’t get to usually play, but I like to think that this could be the soundtrack for my flight to Vancouver.”

Moments of Truth Remixes

When 'Moments of Truth', the debut full length LP from Tim Engelhardt (@timengelhardt), landed in May this year, it took a lot of people by surprise. Released on Poker Flat Recordings, it was clear that a very exciting new talent had arrived - one that at the tender age of 19 had found a voice and sound far beyond his years.

The stunning LP combines his extensive classical training with an eclectic dance edge, utilizing complex melodies with subtle harmonies. It's his elegant, unique touch that makes his music so utterly mesmerizing and sets him far above the competition. (Magnetic Magazine)

This EP further confirms that observation, consisting of three beautifully realised remixes of some of the album’s highlights.

'Kissing Your Eyes' is reworked by André Hommen (@andrehommen) - the German househead who  flips the original into a deep and loopy house bomb - the percussion is tight and fully wound up - sure to unravel a few dancfloors in the near future.

The British DJ and producer Tim Green (@timgreeen) sets to work on 'Eyes Closed' - infusing the original with his own character - a thick, pulsing bass drum, long, dramatic strings and the superb vocal from one of the album's crowning glories.

Fideles’ (@fideles) remix of 'Beyond Time' is typically sublime - the Italian duo Daniele Aprile & Mario Roberti take the track for a spacey, trippy ride with smooth arps and a killer groove reminiscent of Âme at their most progressive.

A very pleasant surprise here from Safejas, a new producer to our ears, courtesy of Brighton-based label, Wave of Endorphins.  Beautiful, shimmering, almost delicate electronic music that falls somewhere between ambient, techno and sound design. 

"Eyeline Inspector" is the debut single from Safejas, aka Lewis Shields.  It is also a collectable track in ID Quest - a game where users explore fictional venues & virtual areas.

Lewis is a Berlin-based producer working in the fractured seams of electronic music, producing sounds which feel both alien and familiar. Moving fluidly between the more exploratory fringes of club music and expansive ambient soundscapes (and readily exploring the space between them), Shields’ music breathes with curiosity and fractious detail.

Before he donned the Safejas moniker, Shields played bass and added electronics to various bands such as Good Guy Clarence in Brighton, and co-founding the live film scoring and audiovisual event Luma on the South coast. Alongside his friend and fellow producer qgb, Shields studied Music and Sonic Arts at the University of Sussex, where the threads of microscopic sound design and compositional experimentation that would shape his current production output began to intertwine. This background in sound art and live audiovisual performance means the music of Safejas feels intimately preoccupied with the intricate relationship between sound and space, with a constant awareness of the possibility for sound design to affect or be affected by its spatial context. Similarly, Shields’ background in live film scoring affords his productions a distinctly visual quality, just as comfortable evoking dimly-lit, lingering dance floors as he is the mist hanging low and thick over a secluded lake. With these influences forming a steady bedrock of an audio aesthetic that nonetheless continually evolves and excites, Safejas is a producer asserting his singularity amidst a teeming multitude of electronic producers.
