Quraishi is a world-class Afghan-American master of the rubab, an ancient instrument belonging to the short-necked lute family. Traditionally made with a single piece of mulberry wood and a skin face, the rubab is often richly ornamented with inlay of bone, ivory, lapis lazuli or mother-of-pearl. There are typically three melody strings and as many as twenty sympathetic strings variably tuned to the modes or ragas, imparting a deep resonance and unique timbre to the national instrument of Afghanistan.

During Quraishi's childhood in Kabul, his father built him his first rubab. The young player quickly excelled in the regional folk styles of his country’s numerous ethnic groups — including the Pashtun, Tajik, and Uzbek — and steeped himself in the discipline and formalistic principles of classical Hindustani music theory, the foundation of Afghanistan’s musical tradition.

After moving to New York in his teens, he quickly found his calling: the dedication of his life to preserving the traditional Afghan rubab style. Quraishi’s music is a rare and vital link between the rich tradition of classical Afghan music, the golden years of Afghan radio, New York City’s diverse immigrant culture, and the future of Afghanistan’s musical identity.

On May 29, Smithsonian Folkways and the Aga Khan Music Initiative will celebrate the tenth and final release of their award-winning "Music of Central Asia" series, a groundbreaking CD/DVD set entitled 'Borderlands: Wu Man and Master Musicians from the Silk Route’.

Shadiana (Celebration) showcases Wu Man (pipa) and Abdulla Majnun (dutar) from "Music of Central Asia Volume 10: Borderlands - Wu Man and Master Musicians from the Silk Route". This song was traditionally performed for medieval kings going into battle, and is now played at popular festivals.

Shadiana is a part of the playlist showcasing the “Music of Central Asia” series (http://www.folkways.si.edu/CentralAsia), ranging from the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, to the mugham and bardic songs of Azerbaijan, to the cross cultural collaborations of Afghanistan and western artists such as Kronos Quartet. From the nomadic and bardic cultures of the steppes to the classical court traditions of the cities, this series celebrates musicians who display a mastery of older traditions and also embody a contemporary spirit of innovation. Produced in conjunction with the Aga Khan Music Initiative, each release includes an extensive color booklet and comes with a vivid bonus DVD containing a series introduction, 24-minute film, interactive glossary and map.
