Listen to the Word of God - Marilyn Haskel

This song by Emilie Teresa Smith, an Argentine-Canadian Anglican Priest who has deep roots in Guatemala, is based on a few lines of Psalm 147. It was arranged and recorded on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples (Vancouver B.C.) by Emilie's wife, Patti Powell, a leader of the Vancouver-area Sacred Singing Circle and a member of the Ubuntu Choir Network.

This is a song for naming, for remembering our own belonging and belovedness, for remembering that we are connected to the whole Cosmos, which was created by the Breath of Life.

It could be a baptism song, or a song for the time of sacred darkening, or in the season of Epiphany. In the Revised Common Lectionary, Psalm 147 falls on the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany.

This song was written by Paul Vasile in August 2020, as part of MMC's ongoing reflection on the formative power of singing. Inspired by the book "My Grandmother's Hands" by Resmaa Menakem, it's also an invitation into wondering how embodied, communal practices like movement/dance, breathing, and singing help settle our bodies and invite us into new connection with others.

Music that Makes Community is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help people connect and learn through singing. We do that by developing and teaching a practice of paperless song leading grounded in a theology of welcome and generosity for the benefit of musicians, clergy, congregants, students and lay leaders who want to use the practice to enrich and enliven their worship and community life.
