MUSIC TREASURES SERIES:

Since first appearing together on the progressive house scene back in 2008 on their Mistique Music label, Michael, Levan and Stiven have evolved immensely. Although still widely regarded for their signature sound, more than ever the trio explores a variety of stylistic blueprints, often cross pollinating genres with an effortless ease.

Besting yourself with each successive outing is no easy task but Michael, Levan and Stiven seem to find a way to continually push the creative envelope and always looking to diversify portfolio. Their widescreen approach often finds them sitting comfortably in a broad range of DJ sets. 

A look back over their discography shows a huge body of work with all spectrums of progressive, deep house, ambient, breaks to techno music being explored at one time or another.

The trio drifts effortlessly through styles, often blurring the lines of conventional genres and
as the sound of trio constantly evolves, each Michael and Levan and Stiven Rivic production comes with much excitement. Once thought of as purely progressive house artists, nowadays they have become adept at stylistically varied creations.

Michael, Levan and Stiven created Kunai Records imprint in 2013 to be an outlet for the trios hugely in demand original productions, and also featured a healthy complement of A-list remixers.

Together the trio has been delivering a steady stream of productions over the last couple of years across some the best underground labels.

Noel Sanger is an artist who, while flying mostly under the mainstream radar, has cultivated a rich musical history along the way. His releases dating back to the 1990s remain in high demand, and his current work, always critically acclaimed, continues to see top DJ support.

Releasing on some of dance music’s top labels, with a recent focus on his own Dissident Music imprint, he has made regular appearances in Beatport’s top ten genre charts, as well as top tens at the Billboard Dance Club Chart, and the top 15 of UK Musicweek’s buzz chart.

Over the years, his work has been heard on labels such as Black Hole, Spinnin’, Armada, Perfecto, High Contrast, Lost Language, Coldharbour, Mute, Dissident and dozens more. He has remixed and worked with artists like Erasure, Nadia Ali, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Matt Darey, Soul In The Machine (with Twin Peaks star Chrysta Bell), and Markus Schulz.

Noel toured extensively as North American warm-up for the best known DJ of all time, Tiesto, and even mixed “Summerbreeze 2,” the follow-up to Tiesto’s “Summerbreeze” mix CD on Nettwerk Recordings. Later, he was invited by no less than BT to collaborate on tracks for Tiesto’s Grammy-nominated 2006 album “Elements Of Life.”

Evolving to deeper sounds, Noel’s label, Dissident Music, was first launched in 2007 and produced a number of hits throughout the ensuing 7 years. Recently relaunched as part of Miami’s Essential Media Group, Dissident has gone from strength to strength, closing out 2021 with three top ten Beatport releases in a row.

As a DJ, Noel has manned the booth at some of the world’s best clubs, sharing the stage with some of electronic music’s top names. He has played at festivals such as Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival (Orlando) and his South Florida residencies have hosted some of the biggest names in dance music, with Noel playing to hundreds and even thousands of eager clubbers each week. Now residing in Orlando, Noel plays select shows nationwide and spends his weeks in the studio, remixing and preparing for his upcoming releases.

It isn’t always the case that after this many years, an artist remains as creative and relevant as Noel has. But between his productions, his label, and his expertise behind the decks, Noel is proving without question that the best is yet to come.

What is techno? Scientists and philosophers have long since pondered the concept of its musical definition since it burst out of Detroit in the mid-‘80s. Is it that notion of the “ghost in the machine”, of soul from electronics that its inventors elicited? Or is it more the repetitive throb and thump of 4/4 beats and slow-burning momentum that the Berghain generation are proponents of? Croatian producer Petar Dundov’s stunning music manages to marry both ideals in the most explosive of fashions.

To Dundov, “techno is music that precedes movement. It is dance music, solid enough to carry emotions through the dance floor and abstract enough to be a template for ever”. And indeed his breathtaking productions embody this ethos, serving the inherent function of making your body pulse spontaneously while also challenging your brain with its complex melodies and slow-burning, hypnotic progressions. It’s the antidote for anyone who thinks that techno is about senseless, dull looping.

Although maybe the word “techno” doesn’t give enough detail about his style, it’s probably the nearest ballpark to whose principles his music adheres – and he is keen to expand the horizons of what people know and expect of the genre. But it’s that sense of his tracks being alive, forever evolving and expanding and increasing in intensity, which gives his music its unique sound and has seen his work crossover into a myriad of different areas of the global electronic music scene. The last two years have seen his mind-bending single Oasis (played by everyone from Dubfire to Sasha to Ben Klock to Prins Thomas to Timo Maas) take the scene by storm with its intricate, ever-changing melodies, John Digweed snap him up for an epic rework of Alan Fitzpatrick’s Reflections, and Gregor Tresher squeeze a deep, mesmerising remix of his track The Life Wire out of him.

His music shows you that he’s a producer with more than churning out mindless, functional and dispensable drivel on his mind. There’s a philosophy entrenched in his productions that breathes the very spirit of life and dynamism into them: “My ultimate goal as a producer and musician is to bridge the world of inspiration and physical world to the extent where the listener wouldn't be able to distinguish between the two. Music has this unique property to communicate deep emotions that are inherently in all of us. We just forgot how to use them, and my search is an attempt to revive those emotions where we all resonate as one.”

Born in Zagreb in the early ‘70s, his career in dance music stretches back the best part of 20 years, but it’s only in the new millennium that he’s been using his own name for his productions. Over the years he’s graced many of the world’s most prestigious and best-loved techno institutions – including mega-festivals I Love Techno, EXIT, Awakenings and Wire, and cutting-edge clubs like Berghain, Matter (RIP), Womb, Air, Fuse and Space. He counts a longstanding relationship with Belgium’s legendary Music Man label amongst his achievements, an imprint that has also played host to releases by everyone from Jeff Mills (for whose label Tomorrow he created the Sculptures mini-LP) to Green Velvet to Robert Hood, and after completing his acclaimed debut album Escapements in 2008, he’s got the follow-up in the works (for completion by the end 2010).

Petar Dundov makes intelligent electronic music that breaks boundaries, moves feet and twists minds. He is without a doubt one of the most inspiring, original and daring producers in electronica, and with the likes of Sven Väth, Francois K, Laurent Garnier, Adam Beyer, Josh Wink, Guy J, Glimpse, Hernan Cattaneo, Brendan Moeller, and Danny Tenaglia amongst his fans, it would be hard to disagree.

Renato Cohen a.k.a.Renato Carvalho Cohen is born and raised in São Paulo, Brazilian drum wizard began his career as a DJ and music producer back in 1996. Since then, he has already played at the world's most important techno venues and festivals, his authentic work exciting the masses wherever he goes. 

Though he's been an established name on the Brazilian club circuit for years and has released numerous ground breaking records, Renato deservedly hit the international spotlight in 2002 with the enormous 'Pontape', which was rapidly signed up by Intec.

Renato has almost single-handedly put the Brazilian dance music scene on the map. With his own unique way of mixing styles, from house to techno and influences of funk and jazz, he has built up a clear Brazilian electronic music identity.

This time for the guest mix on our channel he followed the concpet of mixing just his own productions and he certainly did deliver. Highly recommended

Born and raised in the UK, with diverse DNA and a unique way of experiencing the world, James Harcourt is a unique producer that learned the impact of electronic music during a vibrant London club scene.   Since 2021 his reliable flow of unique sounding and dancefloor focused music has graced the DJ sets of Tale Of Us, Sasha, Adriatique, Marino Canal, John Digweed and the list grows ever longer.   

He has been summarised by Berlin producer Jepe as "delivering a constant flow of great tracks ... beautiful compositions and imaginary voyages".  Inspired by a love of characterful, classic synthesizers and the fusion of these machines with the seemingly limitless possibilities of modern production software, he produced a string of heavily supported releases ensuring a steady, constant growth backed by a consistent work ethic and the purest form of love and connection to music and life itself.
 
Most notably his track "Beholden" from 2021 has reached quarter-of-a-million Spotify streams and featured in the Tale Of Us / Afterlife sets for many months.  His Renaissance track "Refraction" spent nearly two months in the Beatport Electronica top 10 and his debut release on Adriatique's excellent Siamese label - "Bloom" - has been featured in the much coveted Spotify Editorial playlist curated by Tale Of Us.

Hailing from the Spanish mainland is a sound that’s resonating globally thanks to a select choice of producers that have been able to create their own path after years of honest and competent work. A notable character from that sub-culture of game changers is Marc Martinez Nadal, aka AFFKT, who consecrated a music career and has been a driving force behind a vivid & empowering sound that is refined by his drive for perfection. He feels deeply in communion with sounds that range from the most energetic hyper-glossy techno to the most detailed and innovative indie-electronica.

Having worked on coining the sound of this alias since 2008, it has been a plethora of sound, place, person & culture that has provided a platform for AFFKT to experiment with his output. Both as an experienced music producer of his own projects and as a demanded remixer. Still fresh is the mind-bending rework he made for GusGus’ ‘Simple Tuesday’. And what about those created for the likes of Oliver Koletzki, Fejká, Mason or Bufi to name just a few. Dynamite!

The Valencian has never stopped serving huge electronic crossover masterpieces that derive into the many sub-genres of music via key imprints such as Pets recordings, Multinotes, Mobilee, Last Night On Earth or Stil Vor Talent and his very own Sincopat label, and expressing versatility digging deep into his influences of sounds by delivering heart-stopping, engaging techno on the likes of Octopus, Noir Music, Suara… AFFKT is committed to a life of synthesis and this is what sets himself apart from a comparatively shallow glance at dance music.

Within its versatility is that of working with other musicians. As a result, the fantastic teamwork generated with the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Sutja Gutierrez. This synergy can be discovered in their just amazing live performances.

Once described as a ‘Son of a Thousand Sounds’ – precisely the title he chose later for his highly acclaimed, even award-winning LP released in 2016. Another remarkable evidence of his talent, creativity and open-mindedness is the ‘The Big Picture’, his latest album to date, a tour de force released on the renowned Mobilee imprint.

My passion for music began at age 7 when I listened to the first vinyl of my life “The Beatles, Rubber Soul”. Since then I fell in love with music, listening to influences like, Spinetta, Charly Garcia, The Beatles, Queen, Gun’s and Roses, etc.

The passion for electronic music was born when at the end of elementary school, I went to the historic ENERGY PARADE (I was 12!), a Historical Festival in the Bosques de Palermo. From there I began to listen to Radio Energy and to follow artists like JP Firter, SLR, Squad 99, among others.

As a Teenager I  played in different bands of Punk and Melodic Hardcore, then, growing up, I went from being an active listener in the electronic scene, to producing my own material in 2018.

I received support from different artists around the world such as Airwave, Tony from Above & Beyond, Paul Angelo & Don Argento, Juan Pablo Torrez, Bodai, Daria Fomina, Mario Puccio and Sebastián Bust among many others.
