“San Francisco’s Doomed” ...or so they say. There are, however, four Cool Ghouls who will have none of that. Born and raised in Fog Nation’s stripmall suburbs, these boys dreamed of the day when they would move to Shaky City.  San Francisco - the town so many of their electric heroes (Creedence, Thee Oh Sees, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Flamin’ Groovies etc.) call(ed) home - was their destiny.  So they moved to SF, formed a band, packed themselves into crowded apartments, found lousy jobs serving beer and coffee to Bay Area glassholes (alongside counter culture legends), and they have no plans of leaving. Thank the gods their dreams came true! Cool Ghouls are the perfect antidote for San Francisco’s current mess.  They are providing the real-life soundtrack to a new generation of young, loud and gritty San Franciscans that wake up everyday with a beautiful feeling just knowing that these guys won’t let this city’s culture burn to the ground. Their loud guitars, acid riffs, party screams, and stacked-as-f*ck three-part vocal harmonies are echoing down the alleys and shaking foundations. A Swirling Fire Burning Through The Rye is their sophomore full-length album, and it rules.  Recorded live to tape by San Francisco’s Sonny Smith (Sonny and the Sunsets) and mixed and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring), this record elevates Cool Ghouls psychedelic garage jams to a whole new level.  So it is, that Empty Cellar Records is very stoked to present to you ten new delectable Cool Ghouls songs brimming with infectious creative energy. With the vocals on top (did we mention the great harmonies), the drum fills tight, and guitar tones dialed in, this record is an excellent complement to the neverending nights of a neverending summer.  If you don’t believe us, then attend one of their local shows and watch San Francisco’s colorful underbelly dance its cares away. Cool Ghouls definitely knows what’s going on. The band is not oblivious. Just listen to tracks like “The Mile” or “Reelin’” to know that they too are trying to wrap their mind around the swirling fire burning through their town. San Francisco is still doomed... it always has been and always will be.  At least these Cool Ghouls are here to help it go down with just a little bit of true class. The new single by the North East’s most exciting new band MARTHA, is “Present Tense”, a song about a flakey punk friend with delusions of grandeur. With their signature charge of electric energy, breathlessly perfect pop tunes and a sense of exuberant excitement, the song is one of the crowd favourites at their hugely entertaining live shows and one of the highlights of their recent album Courting Strong, out now on Fortuna POP!

 

Hailing from Pity Me near Durham, vegan straight-edgers MARTHA will be releasing their new album ‘Courting Strong’ on 26 May via Fortuna POP! Providing energetic, impassioned pop punk, Martha are informed by 90s indie rock and Scandinavian anarcho noir. The album, produced by MJ from Hookworms, is laden with harmonies and interchangeable vocals whilst still retaining the energy and excitement of the band’s live shows.

 

Formed in 2011 by siblings Naomi (bass, vocals) and Nathan Griffin (drums, vocals) with J. Cairns "JC" (guitar, vocals) and Daniel Ellis (guitar, vocals), Martha have fast become a staple of the UK DIY pop scene. There are many competing stories as to the origin of their band name but it’s a fact that the very last passenger pigeon on earth was called Martha. When she died, the whole species became extinct.

Jupiter Lion to release ‘Brighter’ the highly anticipated follow-up to ‘Silver Mouth’ this September.

Originating from the Mediterranean coast, the trio of Jupiter Lion appears to be an outlander in the city of Valencia. Washing ashore on a wave of ethereal melody and tidal drones, the band is a noticeably different presence from the dance floor fare that is omnipresent on the sandy beaches of Spain.

2013’s ‘Silver Mouth’ (Bcore) was a hypnotic chronicle of kraut rock influences and experimental pop, and the upcoming ‘Brighter’ takes psychedelia into a realm of analog electronics that few bands could ever follow. But Jupiter is not about repeating themselves, which is why they bravely pilot a reinvented sound where jazz, techno, and post punk collide on a timeline still not requiring computer instrumentation.

On ‘Brighter’ Jupiter Lion’s analog keyboards forsake presets, and defy convention with a zapping pulse or shimmering brilliance that makes other synth bands seem lazy for their impersonate sound. The elongated track length of the single, “Your God Is A Human” draws comparisons that bridge both past and future in an affect that is utterly phantasmagoric. Featuring a progression that is as musically adventurous as France’s Magma in the 1970s, the single in addition presents an present-day aesthetic as updated as Portland’s Copy.

After a brief hiatus, Jupiter returned this past summer to share the stage with Neutral Milk Hotel, and Godspeed You Black Emperor at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound. Completed tour runs with Spectrum and Dead Skeletons are indicative of the band’s cross-over potential, assuring their station in the pantheon of futurist rock where allies will be in great supply.

With the release of ‘Brighter,’ Jupiter Lion have taken a surreal trajectory of lucid synths, agile jazz rhythm and cinematic poise. Proving that when something is instantly destined to be a classic, it still has one foot firmly planted in the future.
