Mustard Mix Series

Not sure about you lot but it’s recently felt like things really are on the up! As such, we’re channeling the one thing we’re all still missing through our latest Mustard Mix. The Clubs.

Two Phase U, real name Hernan Gonzalez, is based in Uruguay and has been producing music under a number of alias’s since the late 90’s. 2019 was a great year for Hernan with notable releases on Andrew James Gustav’s Marginal Returns label, as well as EYA, Opia and TC80s Sequalog, whilst heading up his own label @Tiredbeat, which he founded in 2012.

As with every Mustard Mix, we ask the artist to go in any direction they are feeling, and Two Phase U was clearly up for it, delivering a mix fit for any after hours club. 

Hernan has kindly provided us the track list as all the music in the mix is from friends not only from his home town and country In South America, but from around the world.

This one’s got us raring for the weekend and ready to get back partying - hope you guys dig it as much as we do!

MMS #4: Two Phase U and Friends Mix

Yes yessss! The sun is shining, Euros are around the corner and our man Harry Wills has just dropped off his Mustard Mix - as Thursday’s come, we’re having it!

Harry began making music over 10 years ago and since then has gained huge support for his own releases as well as the work under the alias Phone Traxx with his good pals Alec Falconer and Rob Amboule. 

Making his name as a versatile DJ/Producer, he’s since added Teacher, Label Owner and Party Thrower to the mix, working on projects like party-turned-label ‘Sock It To Me’.

This year has been a particularly special one, seeing both the launch of his own label ‘Nimble’ and the release of his debut album - Luxury Bedtime. 

The mix itself has been perfectly curated to soundtrack life finally getting back to normal, the start of summer and most importantly, being able to get back on the dancefloor. The only thing missing is the Big Bag of Cans you will most certainly need when you give this one a spin!

MMS #7: John Dimas (Secret Universe) - Galactic Encounters Mix

Yesss yes, it’s time for our next Mustard Mix and this one is premium.

Whilst Velvet Velour’s roots are tied to Bristol through running his own night ‘Niceness’ and hosting a monthly show on the city’s SWU.FM station, his audience is starting to spread much wider over the globe. With a highly praised debut EP via Dr Banana & Alec Falconer’s ‘Scratch Discs’ label earlier this year, VV’s next record will be released on Joe Delon’s, ‘Welt Discos’ label - which you may hear inside this mix ;). 

‘Niceness’ is new to Bristol but has already hosted some favourites; such as Youandewan and Liquid Earth, and they’ve got some lovely upcoming events welcoming Joe Delon, Hamish Cole and Tho. 

The mix is 100% Velvet Velour productions, aka Liam Dadds, and after giving this one a spin we’re sure you’ll agree we’re expecting most of these to find their way onto those round waxy discs we all love in the coming year/ years.

MMS #8: Velvet Velour - 100% VV Productions Mix

2021 was an amazing year for us at Musty Head Records, and by Christ are we ready to step it up a gear in 2022. 

Keeping true to Musty tradition, we are kicking things off by championing a man with a very bright future ahead of himself. 

Harry Cochran aka Hazr, has been making waves since he set up the Magic Carpet label a couple of years ago with fellow Co-Pilot Sam Applebee. 

Releases from artists such as DJ Void, Planar Traits, Ramu and Baby Rollen have become stalwarts in a steady number of sets and mixes, with Joe Delon showing his fellow Portuguese neighbours a serious amount of support and love, as he took to the decks in Lisbon’s Lux Frágil Club for Magic Carpet’s first event. No doubt, this one went off!!

We’ve been sitting on this mix for a while now, but having finally met Harry at the Lion and Lamb in London last month, it only felt right we open up the new year with this one. 

Pleasure to have you on Sir, and stay locked in on this one guys – big things to come from Harry and Magic Carpet this year!

Hisashi, from Tokyo 🇯🇵  has kindly provided with just over an hour of records he has collected especially for this mix. This one has been in the pipeline for nearly a year, and it is most definitely worth the wait!

MMS #10: Hisashi - Yōkai Downtempo mix

The Method Collective chaps have been running shindigs around the Midlands and the North for a while now, hosting the likes of Gene On Earth, Alec Falconer and Youandewan to name a few.

Their new alias ‘Moonstones’ is a project inspired by Birmingham - the city the duo call home. During the 17th century, The Lunar Society of Birmingham formed a group of prominent figures in the Midlands Enlightenment, who would meet to chew the fat on social and cultural matters of importance during one of the golden ages of English history.
Moonstones have since been deposited around the city in recognition of its various members.

With Edd hailing from Lichfield, the location of these historic meetings, and Louis born just a couple of stops down the Cross City Line route, this mix pays homage to their beloved Brum and is a ‘tip of the cap’ to the city they are now prominent across.

Love the story behind Moonstones’s alias and the theme of this mix, and it’s safe to say the tune selection is as inspired as the history that led to the duo’s formation!

Expect a range of housey vibes, old stuff, rare bits and summer feels from this one - thanks again lads, top work.

After well over a year since our last track, we are back with the third instalment of our Top Shelf Series and this one stinks of summer, thanks to the man Matias, aka 'pèz canaris'.

We can't quite remember how we found ourselves on Matias's Soundcloud, perhaps through divine intervention, cos this lads got that musty magic!

Hailing from South America, he’s part of the Chilean based collective, @ocultocl who have been on putting on gatherings and parties for a couple of years now.

After the festival and party hiatus caused by Covid, we’re sure you’re as eager as we are to enjoy our first proper summer back at it and giving it the full throttle. So with that said, tuck into this one and get yourself up for the summer!

TSS #3: pèz canaris - Tolten Rapids (Free Download)

Number 12 in our Mustard Mix Series is here thanks to London based brothers, and good friends of MHR, Will and Max, aka ‘Duowe’.

These boys are the force behind the ever growing label and party, @fraiserecords which they kicked off in 2019, and have since put out a number of records on the label, with the likes of Urulu, Baby Rollen and most notably the link up with their good mate, Picasso.

As well as a label, they also run their own nights and radio show, ‘Eclectic Blends’ on Voices Radio, which provides a slower soundtrack every 2nd Friday of the month!  

More recently the lads have landed themselves on none other than the man himself, Gene on Earth’s imprint, ‘Limousine Dream’ with a tried and tested EP with Picasso. 

With a handful of new music set to be released for the rest of this year, we can’t wait to hear what else is in store for these fellas. Anyway enough waff - we’ll let the music do the talking!

It’s time for the next mix in our series!

Whilst Ohm G is predominantly based over in New York, some of you may know this chap from the countless events he has played at over the years, sharing the stage with some of the best in the business. Hosting the likes of The Ghost, Vera, KRN to name a few.

In addition to spinning tunes, Omar runs his own night, ‘Decatur’ which has been a staple for over 5 years now, and more recently, they have decided to set up their own label, with the first release coming from Lucho. This release, unsurprisingly has gained plenty of support from around the globe.

Either way, if you your not familiar with Omar then get tucked into this lovely hour of rare digs, records and all round wicked tunes from the Puertorican.

Henry has his own YouTube channel (very, very good btw) which he dedicates to sharing music from his own multi-genre collection that’s yet to be released online. In his own words, it’s his way of giving back to the online digging community that’s provided him with such great music over the years. Lovely stuff.

It’s a real pleasure for MHR to bring you Henry’s debut podcast mix ‘Deep Down in the Dub’. A Ronseal title for a mix that provides exactly what it says on the tin.

What’s up Musty lovers! With the UK weather dropping some serious celsius, we thought we’d bring the heat with our next instalment. 

Don’t be shocked if this is the first time you’re coming across Lourenzo, who by his own admission is a man of mystery. Hailing from Curitiba, one of Brazil’s most lively scenes and the city he learned his craft as both DJ and collector. However, it’s obvious he draws upon a number of influences throughout his music.

When he’s not making music, you’ll find Lourenzo selling records or on the bill at some of Brazil’s hottest venues either behind the decks or running events - everything this man does is for the music.

We think it’s also important to mention the YouTube channel he runs, ‘Motion Blür’ where you can discover a whole host of digs from his vast personal collection.

This mix has been in the pipeline for quite some time now and following on from his wicked @themuddshow debut with Rocky we are delighted to get this one out to you all! 🎶🤝🏽

The 26 year old from Philadelphia US, has been showing what he is all about these last weeks with 10 outings in the last month! He recently has been added as a resident to the music institution The Shakedown by Worship Records. These guys have been throwing parties every month for the last 23 years! 👏🏽

Aside from his talents behind the decks, Ty works in a lovely record shop in Philly called Impressions. Be sure to check their Discogs out for plenty 🔥

This mix sums up the start of summer perfectly with all the ingredients to get yourself in the mood! ☀️

Co-founding the Distill crew back in 2019, the collective of 4 friends have been organising and running events in both Bordeaux and Paris, providing the biggest names in the game - Nicolas Lutz, Melina Serser, Noizar to name a few.
 
Pablo’s taken a different approach to mixes he’s done previously, exploring styles other than the dance/club genres he’s known for, packed with tracks you’ll probably be hearing for the first time.

MMS #21: Ollie Blunt - Home Comforts Mix

Yes, yes! We are back with the latest Musty Mix and this one comes courtesy of our good friend Gap.

Calling Ljubljana home, Gap’s been diggin and playing records for the last 7 years and has developed a keen ear for the dreamy and groovy sound we love here at MHR. 

Recently joining outfits like od:vod, just us, Luckison and K4 club, Gap’s ever growing presence across the scene is something we’re buzzing to see and support, and expect much more of.

This mix is on the gentler side with a blend of modern sounds and we think it fits the seasonal shift to Autumn pretty damn beautifully.

MMS #22: Gap - The 3rd Illusion of Liquid Sounds Mix

So our last Musty Mix of 2024 comes from a new close friend of ours that we had the pleasure of meeting back in April this year in his home town of Cluj, Romania.

Centrifug, (Renato) is the man behind the ever-growing and inspiring – Pressure Nights. 

Hosting the likes of Hicham, Trails Bucharest, Vass and Tho to name a few, he is the driving force behind the nightlife in Cluj and is forever on the hunt for new spaces throughout the city and beyond. This mix showcases his extensive record collection with a big nod to the 90s.

MMS #23: Centrifug - The Scar-Faced Mix

So we’re back with another Musty Mix to grace your ears, this one coming in from Jacob Tr!p. 

As with Musty tradition, we’re all about giving the artist free rein and creativity when it comes to putting their stamp on the series and this one’s no different. 🌀

In his own words, Jacob describes this as mix as ‘Earth Music’. A made up term that focuses on acoustic incorporations and organic sound design which is evident in and throughout the duration of the mix. 🌳🍄

Based in London and through his party Spike Melt, run alongside Seb Trillo, he has showcased his sound at notable venues through the city such as Lion and Lamb, Little Portland Street and more. Be sure to pay them a visit if you ever get the chance 🎶😎

We’re thrilled to present an exclusive, 100% Unreleased Mix from East London-based producer and crate digger, Duncan Thomas. A bit of a production guru, Duncan has built a solid reputation for his style and deep musical knowledge.

 With a wealth of releases on respected labels such as Hoove, Silky Beats, Animal Crossing, Howl and Space Tours, Duncan brings a fresh collection of unreleased gems to this mix—many of which are being heard outside of a live show environment for the very first time.

A former music production tutor at London Sound Academy, Duncan now runs his own creative hub, Duncan Thomas Studio, where he continues to mentor up-and-coming artists and refine his craft.

This mix is a signature showcase of Duncan’s sound: a fusion of funk-driven grooves, emotive harmonies, and immersive atmospheres that transport listeners on a true sonic journey.

A creative playground for our favourite artists to experiment sonically and journey into the unexpected.

Kicking things off is a man who needs no introduction. Drawing inspiration from an induced other world, our good friend Voigtmann guides us through an emotive and mind altering trip, designed to reflect the general mood of late. Yet in typical style, there’s plenty of nice surprises to uncover, and sounds which symbolise an optimistic look to the future.

This mix showcases another side to Voigtmann’s sound, and we hope you dig it as much as we do.

Owner of the coveted DAC (Deeper Audio Cuts) and Jupiter labels, Scott Featherstone began making music in the late 80's, and over the past 3 decades there are few who have been as consistent with their production.

‘Vinaloop’, his release on Desyn’s Faciendo label, seen by many as the release of 2020, proved the sounds he was making back in the 90's are still as relevant as ever today. 

Scott takes on the Mustard Mix under his Triform alias, and there's no messing around with this one. 100% his own production, 100% dancefloor material.

With releases already on Chat Noir and Deep in Dis intl, the Parisian’s latest release on Truly Madly’s Mind Helmet label certified his status as one of the most promising producers of the now.

His wide range of influences and natural ability to infuse styles and genres are a recipe for a unique and fresh sound, the result - a track that takes the TSS from the main room to the afters.

TSS #2: Noiro - Moody Woody (Free Download)

Strap yourselves in guys, we’ve got a real special one today. 

You may know Back Lighting as a member of Kepler 129 - the Paris and Lille based crew at the forefront of the new French movement, renowned for hosting parties, podcasts and more recently, launching their new label VISOLUX.

Hugo is the man behind the now infamous Back Lighting YouTube channel, and this can clearly be heard through his approach to the Mustard Mix. From an inspired perspective, he’s curated a set that blends old music with classics, oddities, cd albums and even wrong speeded records, giving us an insight into the sounds that get him going.

The Renaissance Mix is a nod not only to the new wave of French artists, but to the nostalgic sounds of the past Back Lighting so elegantly revives with this mix.

This one really has it all - get stuck in and have a cracking weekend!
