A new collection of work titled 'Sodium Light' from myself has just been released on Lee Norris's excellent NeoTantra label. The work was inspired by a series of night walks my daughter and I took towards the back end of 2019; pre all the states we find ourselves in at the moment. It's an impressionistic work of night-time cityscapes. Mastered by Fraser McGowan.

The single „Moving Forward“ preludes The Allegorist´s 4th album „Blind Emperor“ portraying the essence of a mythical land that tells of struggle that will lead to prosperity. The protagonist, the Blind Emperor, leads the charge into a brighter tomorrow. Like chapters from a novel, each track allows the listener to be carried by the story. „Moving Forward“, is fervorous with a sense of impending chaos. It has beguiling builds with an added punch while staying in line with the riveting sound design. The energy created within it has the listener in liberation but with a focused sense of direction. It is the foretaste of an epic, cinematic, choral, ambient techno album combining The Allegorist´s depictive, written and musical storytelling with a concept portrayed visually, orally and audibly to deliver another saga in her ever-evolving figments of fantasy. She wrote the included story and composed a poem that all combine to tell the tale of The Blind Emperor.

This stunning collaboration between Andrew Heath and James Osland is overwhelmingly informed by both a dense, drifting landscape and a love of process - a slow tone collage. Here lies beauty and delicacy - an intimate tracery of piano notes and modular tones woven between field recordings, organic electronics and shimmering guitar. ‘Once we were all here and nowhere else’ hardly dares to breathe sometimes, as it leaves you suspended in the quiet, shining air. 

James and Andrew were drawn together by a mutual respect for each other's work in the ambient music field. Both are UK based artists. Andrew has released several albums and EPs on Disco Gecko, Whitelabrecs, Rusted Tone Recordings, Elm Records and Chihei Hatakeyama’s Japanese label, White Paddy Mountain. He has collaborated with among others, the legendary Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Dutch ambient guitarist, Anne Chris Bakker and electronica artist, Banco de Gaia. James Osland not only runs the boutique cassette label, Elm Records but releases as an artist in his own right having worked with such labels as Unknown Tone Records, Whitelabrecs, Flaming Pines and Rusted Tone Recordings to name a few. His work seeks to explore our relationships with sound, memory and place through a variety of different sonic processes. 

Both artists have been quietly working on material together for the last few years so expect more from this wellspring of beautiful and dreamlike work.

Following on from 2021s ‘Sodium Light’, ‘Brick and Air’ is another reflective and reactive collection of pieces that show an active engagement with the environments in which we live. In early 2021 Greig moved his family into a new home in a relatively unexplored area of town and was immediately struck by the aesthetics of the location both in sight and sound. The work that followed was all a reflection of this urban space that Greig and his family found themselves. Inspired by countless walks, a few outside recording sessions and sessions of photographing the new locale, Brick and Air was almost diaristic in its evolution. An ode to distant traffic noise and the hum of air-conditioning outlets behind shopping precincts.

Holistic, soundscape storyteller The Allegorist takes inspiration from the ancient world for her fifth studio album, set for release on her label Awaken Chronicles. A sonic fable titled TEKHENU, it continues the trajectory that the Berlin-based electronic producer and sound-designer has been following since the beginning - conceptualising narrative-heavy LPs centered around mythical lands. Her new works depict a lost protagonist and her spiritual, inward search across ten enrapturing chapters.
As with her previous works, The Allegorist spins a poignant tale around the LP. The 10-chapter album comes with a short story, The Tale of TEKHENU, and every single will be accompanied by a cinematic trailer by Anna Jordan (The Allegorist). TEKHENU will be released both on vinyl and digitally on 05 May 2023 on The Allegorist's label, Awaken Chronicles.
The title of the LP is a nod to the towering monoliths by the ancient Egyptians. Known to most by their Greek-given name “obelisk”, they stand tall around the world and it’s their global dispersion that inspired The Allegorist for the title of the album, seeing it as an allegory of a common bond, a point of connection.
Two years in the making, TEKHENU comes after her warmly-received fourth LP Blind Emperor, a powerful cinematic techno outing. Released last February, it brought blistering battles waged across harsh, hostile terrain. “Blind Emperor is about the journey, and fight for one’s truth,” she explains. “This album jumps ahead through its protagonist and linked characters, exploring themes of human connection, intuition, guidance, evolution, freedom, and acceptance.” Heavily utilising her vocals across all her works, it’s within this LP that we are more fully indulged in her stunning vocal range and deftness in using sound design to contort the vibrations that she fervidly transmits.
TEKHENU’s release will come after The Allegorist drops five singles, the first being ‘Trees of Peace’, a track that explores ancestral lines with shamisen-like chords, wooden and wistful drums, and oriental synths. ‘Born In The River’ follows the enchanting, orchestral opener ‘Whispers Of The Wind’, and it bolsters the intensity with tribal-like breakbeat sandwiched by hallowed chants. Peaceful whirling synths and calming vocals uplift ‘Inner Dialogue’, the LP’s most intimate track which traces the intricate process of decision. ‘Tekhenu’ is the penultimate and it kicks up the pace as the euphoric furor breaks through the sacred cries, dense percussions, and emotive chanting - a concoction set to galvanise a movement, which is apt for a track that touches on the inevitability of human connection in the face of our own individual paths. ‘Barefoot’ closes the LP on a high as it traces the outcomes of discarding the rules and embracing the wildness within us, with swaying synths, rejoiceful vocals, and rhythmic beats driving the listener to give into their innermost self.

Hey, you remember the Icelandic independent imprint called INNI Music, yes? It opened up with Atli Örvarsson's You Are Here back in 2020, and then there was Rose Riebl's Do Not Move Stones in 2021, followed up with Jónsi, Sin Fang, Alex Somers, Kjartan Holm's Sounds of Fischer Vol. 1 a year after, all of which have consistently made to my Best of the Year lists, in every single year. Right. So, yes, this is the same Holm from that Jónsi (of Sigur Rós fame) collaboration, this time with a solo release. Hailing from Reykjavik, Kjartan Holm is a musician and a film composer with half a dozen scores under his belt. This album, titled HORIZON, was originally written for a same-named documentary about the late Icelandic painter Georg Guðni, "whose innovative interpretations of forms and ideas paved the way for a renaissance in Icelandic landscape painting." The music, as conveyed in a piece I am premiering for you today, is capturing the vast and sprawling atmospheres, blending abstract textures with ethereal melodies in pastel haze, shifting tones, and wide brushstrokes. You don't even need to look up the paintings to see the resemblance (but I recommend that you do). Lovely tonalities to get lost in on this one, and I recommend that you pick up the album, in just a few days...

Berlin-based Anna Jordan aka The Allegorist has a background as a painter and having added music making to her arsenal of artistic skills, it’s perhaps no surprise that her productions are highly cinematic, instantly visually evocative pictures weaved in sound rather.  From Birth Until Death sees her utilising an array of field recordings from Berlin’s Grunewald Forest, from footsteps in the snow to faraway planes and dog’s barking, incorporating them into her own layered synths, deep bass bombs and electronic beats.  From the grandiose heralds, ghostly choirs and d&b-isms of ‘In My Blood’ to the cataclysmic blows of ‘Momentum’, it’s experimental music on a grand, ambitious scale, like the soundtrack to some internal memory movie that won’t let go.
