Hot on the heels of 'Vision Mixtape' Vol. 1, electronic music label U-TRAX invite Dutch producer Legowelt, aka Danny Wolfers, to curate a second compilation album.
 
Danny Wolfers is a truly prolific producer and performer who effortlessly spans various electronic music styles. Most frequently producing as Legowelt, his unique style comes from an unfaltering devotion to hardware, be it old, new or completely worn out. Wolfers spends his days jamming on music-making toys with his output veering from dense techno to whizzing electro, deeper electronic and everything in between. Clone, L.I.E.S., Bunker, you name it, they have all come calling for the man's music. Quite simply, Legowelt is a musical force with boundless artistry.
 
Wolfers and U-TRAX label boss DJ White Delight first met each other at the doorsteps of record store Rush Hour during A.D.E. 2018. Being a fan of Legowelt, White Delight spoke to Wolfers for over an hour before discovering he was the producer Legowelt. As a high school kid in the mid-90s, U-TRAX were a vital label for Wolfers, and some of the first records he ever bought (at I.F.'s legendary The Hague Hotmix Record Store) were U-TRAX releases. Legowelt decided to post his first demo tape to U-TRAX, taking huge inspiration from early releases on the label. Due to a twist of fate, that tape ended up at someone else's mailbox, and U-TRAX never got to learn about Wolfers' genius before going into a 21-year hibernation in 1997.
 
Fast forward to 2021 and Legowelt and U-TRAX finally join forces, with Wolfers picking some of his all-time favourites from the U-TRAX back catalogue and Phoq U Phonogrammen archives, in addition to taking a peek at future U-TRAX releases. He selected the 14 tracks, wrote very personal notes for each one and created artwork in his characteristic style. His drawing depicts some Utrecht landmarks, like the Dom Tower (as featured in the U-TRAX logo) and the city's unique canals.

The compilation brings a wide range of electronic music, from smooth ambient techno to hard electro, and spicing things up further with acid, techno and hip hop flavours. It features nine tracks from the 90s archives of U-TRAX and Phoq U Phonogrammen, by techno favourites like The Connection Machine, Tick Trax, P.A. Presents, Sonar Base and one track by Sp@sms from 2019. This selection of classics is completed by four brand new tracks from forthcoming U-TRAX albums by artists like hip-hop producer Thavius Beck (N.Y.C.), old school electro producer Nuklear Prophet (L.A.) and new school electro producer w1b0 (N.L.).

While the German producer Martin Matiske averages a new release under his given name every few years, there was a long stretch of time in which sightings of his Blackploid alias were much more rare. After dropping an EP for Frustrated Funk in 2006, fans found further material hard to come by over the next decade or so. However, Matiske has reinvigorated Blackploid in recent times, with the project making a few compilation appearances and dropping a couple of EPs across 2020.

That run now culminates in Cosmic Traveler, a four-track affair which marks Matiske’s debut appearance on Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit. Given the long wait, it’s great just to see Blackploid back among the fray once again. But for the project’s CPU curtain-raiser to be an EP of such high-quality techno jams? Now that really is spoiling us.

Cosmic Traveler’s title nods towards the sort of stargazing aesthetics one finds in classic Detroit techno. However, while there are undoubtedly ties to the Motor City in this music, the record ultimately steers less towards spacious atmospherics and more towards the taut, lean machine-funk of seminal practitioners like Dopplereffekt.

Matiske sets his stall out from the off. Opener ‘Electric Engine’ begins with a run of stiff-necked 808 kicks before hissing hi-hats, a grizzly bassline and all manner of futuristic sounds enter to warp the tune into hyperspace. Following cut ‘Night Drive’ repeats the trick of ‘Electric Engine’ but adds a pleasingly dinky synth lead in order to nudge itself slightly towards bleep-techno territory.

The two cuts on Cosmic Traveler’s B-side are pure late-night goodness, a pair of mid-set heaters primed for dark basements. ‘Pleasure Activism’ delivers on the promise of its title and then some, pushing the Kraftwerk template to extremes by bringing a load of gnarly synth lines into play over a wobbling acidic chug. Finally, EP closer ‘The Race’ is reminiscent of both the twisted machine-funk of Gerald Donald’s Japanese Telecom project and the playful modern evolutions of artists like fellow CPU high-flyer Jensen Interceptor.

The resurgence of Martin Matiske’s Blackploid project continues with Cosmic Traveller, an EP of timeless electro-funk and techno.

Its certainly been a weird year for sure, the title “Vaxxer” in 2020 was chosen back when I first saw this word popping up in some article, very early on in the Corona-saga. Who would have thought it would have become such a mainstay expression in our everyday lives hardly one year later. It has become yet another way to label people and put us into groups: “Vaxxers” and “anti-
Vaxxers”, another detail in the evolution towards a dystopia that is not happening in movies but in real day-to-day life.
Just a track name at first, we decided to use it also as the title for the whole EP which eventually was released in April 2020 on Specimen Records, and like anything virus-related it started living its own life, growing stronger as more DJ’s were picking it up: Dave Clarke, Solid Blake, DJ Stingray, Ralph Lawson, ADJ, to name but a few.
Now, a year ahead, it brings me great pleasure and honor to present these exclusive remixes and interpretations of Vaxxer, the artists involved are big inspirations and one by one true hero's of mine, most of whom have become dear friends in these difficult times. When these remixes started coming in, I'm in awe of the sonics that presented to me and I'm proud to present The Vaxxer remixes.

Recorder now comes with a first solo-EP on the label, in which the producer reaches back into some deeper, almost trippy states of mind, accompanied by some ultimately addictive electro grooves.
Taste Vaxxer and you will be inoculated from any bad reproduction or genetic mutations in this forward-thinking approach to electro music.
