On Sunday 9 September 2018, the final day of Gaudeamus Muziekweek, we invited composers and musicians from the festival to host their own hour-long live radio show at online radio station Stranded FM. Eva Geist, who was part of the Stranded FM-curated part of Gaudeamus Saturday Night, spend a beautiful hour mixing exotic electronics, cunning grooves and hazey pop - and letting the music speak entirely for itself.

Selva Discos returns to the LP reissue game with a bang – by giving a new life to the stunning and very sought-after Memória das Águas album by Fernando Falcão. Originally recorded in 1979 in Paris but only released independently in Brazil in 1981, the album comes complete with genre-hopping explorations that swirl around ambient soundscapes, lively jazz, experimental-leanings, Afro-rhythms and a unique blend of Latin grooves and French pop with a Brazilian accent, but it also comes with a story as deeply unique as the music.

To make a long story short, after participating in the political movements against the military regime in 1968 in Brazil, Fernando Falcão left the country and moved to France, where he lived in exile for 15 years. There, after working in music, acting, and sculpting, he involved himself in Jérôme Savary's legendary Grand Magic Circus, where he met his first wife, Valérie Kling. It was from this relationship that a partnership began between the musician and his father-in-law, the artist François-Xavier Lalanne, who guided Falcão in the process of inventing sound sculptures such as the balauê – a horizontal version of the berimbau string instrument whose sound was influenced by a water stream (since there was a hose soaking parts of the balauê wet during the performances). Much of this exploration and experimentation resulted in the album Memória das Águas.

The album still sounds like little else from the time. As audacious and experimental as it is seamlessly listenable, it takes in immersive textures one moment before breaking out into Fela Kuti-esque brass-soaked grooves the next. It’s ultimately a record that captures the spirit and rhythm of Falcão’s homeland combined with the lush production and art-pop approach associated with his exiled home; It’s a polished, well executed and glistening record. Its fusion of African, Brazilian, jazz, pop, classical and avant-garde collides to create a record that spans as many continents as it does genres.

Remastered from the original master tapes, not only the sound but the artwork of Memória das Águas was completely and faithfully restored. Also, the reissue comes with unprecedented liner notes featuring rare photos of the musician and his sound sculptures plus articles that help to explain who Fernando Falcão was and where Memória das Águas sits among other staples of Brazilian music, including one from DJ and selector John Gómez – who helped to connect Selva Discos' Augusto Olivani with Diana Lion, Fernando Falcão's daughter (since the musician died in 2002), for this project.
 
After Memória das Águas, Selva Discos will also reissue another long lost Fernando Falcão LP album – Barracas Barrocas.

How many times in difficulties have he pretended to be happy. However, in order to succeed in pretending, it seems like this is pretty believable. Happiness is unlikely to smile at those who too often ignore their weaknesses and limitations. Golden Bug & In Fields, Sordid Soundsystem, Anatolian Weapons, Puma & The Dolphin, Sigward &  Oliver Sudden, Youkounkoun, TCB and Secret Cirquit - all of these people scattered in different parts of the world have one thing in common - the culture of music.
Our pick up here is Doble Discone, also Glasgow residents collective with its eclectic vision of sound frequence, nostalgic, inspired by the best electronics traditions of the 70s. Better to have a listen.

Last year David contributed his epic 'Dream Terran' to our Free Download Series. After putting this out we asked if he would be keen on putting together a New Beat inspired mix for this series and here it is...

This 2 hour recording is a mix of New Beat, New Wave, Disco / Not Disco and Synth Pop. It feels quite special to us, as it is the sound we would regularly hear early doors at David's TEAK parties. In fact, listening to this mix we both immediately said how it felt like walking downstairs into TEAKS home - The Jacobs Antique Market Basement.

It was through attending these parties that much of our musical taste was shaped, and still today we regularly reminisce about some of the sets we witnessed at TEAK. So it feels great to finally have David representing the crew on our Podcast Series with a typically distinctive set.

No Borders - Just Coexist

This time we`re trying to codify culture and social behaviour with Jokios Kultūros (@jokioskulturos_official). His digging excesses have no limits.  It could not be better than having this great human for the next "social expectations" podcast. Asking him about the meaning of his name he told me it could be translated as "man without culture". Jokios is a real music cosmopolitan. Not appropriating - more a way of translating his multi cultural horizon into music. I am happy to see his world having no borders, no shapes, no specific predominant culture. Just a place where we all should be together exchanging the most beautiful content we can share with each other: music.

Following an incredible record showcase and release party last month on Mutant Radio, the Inside Out Records residency begins with a very personal mix by Constantinos Parisinos, who alongside Stavros Potamitis (Stevie R) head the small independent experimental London label, while at the same time spend most of their time obsessively creating their own productions and adding to their never ending record collection of obscure music gems. An immersive, sonic journey through time and space, textures and emotions, Constantinos Parisinos plays tracks spanning from the 90’s to current unreleased secrets, from ambient experimentation to 130 bpm breaks and back again.

Invisible Inc. proudly presents the latest outing by London-based electro-prog/psych/kraut entity Higamos Hogamos.
Re-Exit EP is a psychedelic mutant hybrid combining orchestral drama and psych rock to create an imaginary spaghetti western soundtrack. Had Michael Nyman and John Adams worked with David Axelrod and asked The Residents to produce it they might have ended up somewhere similar.
Features an extended mix and radio mix of the title track plus a cosmic dub remix by GK Machine and a fourth track that's possibly the oddest of the lot....Gong Fishing is a little Eno, a little Ennio...and much more.
The EP is released on the same day as the new Higamos Hogamos album "Generation Games" - an ambient epic driven by modular/vintage synths and field recordings hiding a distinctly dystopian sci-fi feel underneath its apparent beauty.
