Marja Ahti, a musician and composer living and working in Turku, Finland. Working with field recordings and other acoustic sound material combined with electronics and feedback, she investigates the borderland where the sounds mirror each other or communicate. Originally from Sweden, Ahti has been a part of the Finnish experimental music scene for more than ten years in different constellations and is currently active in the duo Ahti & Ahti with her partner and as a member of the Himera artist/organizer collective.

q. pls introduce yourself
a. Hey ! I'm corncob. My friends call me heather :) I'm from Philly (in the US of A) and live in Düsseldorf for now. A lot of things excite me: sampling crappy sounds and making a new home for them, playing my Switch at night before bed, reading about early music technologies, listening to really beautiful polyphony, trying to find the intersections between early and late.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
a. Last March I stayed in Glasgow for a month. The experience was quite lonely but I picked up a lot of really great cassette tapes while there, both old and new, which injected a lot of much needed energy into my life. I decided to use one of those tapes, a jaunty album of traditional Breton music, as the central material for the piece. The cassette as well as my experience with it is sampled, recomposed, and reflected throughout.

q. what's the best way enjoy your mix?
a. Since the music vacillates between playful and pensive, a good pairing would be a glass of hot water (with or without lemon) and a friend.

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...
a. A large charcoal drawing of a horse drafted by the landlord, a German woman with an interest in all things equestrian.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a. So many! Two upcoming solo records, a dissertation that I pray ends eventually, cool radio projects with Repeater Radio, some fun releases on my early music/later music label Semibegun, and I hope to beat Super Metroid soon without too much more frustration :)

We welcome back Coline Cornelis to Brasserie Atlas for a new "Les Choses", focusing on flower anthesis.  Anthesis refers to the flowering period of a plant. The first part of this set is about blossoming, light and colour. It evokes the elements of a flower, the petals, the pistil and the pollen. The second part looks at fertilisation – the spores that disperse to fuse and recalls the beauty of chance, connections and similarities. The iris of an eye is reminiscent of the universe, just as a picture of pollen under a microscope is reminiscent of lichen. The third part deals with harmony and the state of symbiosis which is the principle of lichen formation, that can be found among things and beings.

Solarium is an hour-and-a-half organ piece intended for ‘afters’, that period of slack that follows the frenzy of a techno-fuelled night. It leans on dawn’s emotional potency to interweave those in need of the curative benefits of organ frequencies to end the night with those in search of a new temporal encounter to begin the day.
 
Moulded by the tenets of rave culture, the piece upholds the freedom of its audience. Speakers subtly amplify the instrument in the nave of the church, where listeners wander, sit, stand or lie, to focus on the score or lose themselves in sound.
 
In an age of digitally enhanced musical overconsumption, fabricating new ways of listening to music together is a means of generating the unheard-of. Instead of a one-way ejection in the face of the public, Solarium spawns the frame of a collective experience that reclines on its braided threads, whether they be sonic, scenic, somatic or social.

Solarium came to life during an artistic residency at l’église du Gesu in Toulouse, France. It was performed live by Cindy Castillo and Maxime Denuc on Sunday morning 22/09/2019 at 10am, presented as an after party of the annual Festival ‘Électro Alternativ’. Special thanks to Regarts, Toulouse les Orgues, Gmea - Centre National de Création Musicale Albi-Tarn and la Mairie de Toulouse.

Maxime Denuc is an electronic music composer and producer. In 2006, he co-founded Plapla Pinky, a duo noted for their atypical approach to club music, somewhere between rave, baroque and contemporary music. They released several records and were invited to perform at numerous top-notch clubs and festivals around the globe.
 
As a solo artist, Maxime Denuc covers a broad musical spectrum, previous work “NL” strives to translate North Sea landscapes into noise, while Low stages the brittle nature of adolescence as a movie for three young trombonists. In addition to these activities, Maxime Denuc works with performing arts and also devotes himself to research. After obtaining a degree in musicology at Paris-IV, he graduated in 2019 with a master’s degree from EHESS Paris in “Theories and Practices of Language and Arts”, with a major in music.

High-spirited and uncompromising, talented and inspiring, Cindy Castillo has been raising her visibility on the international organ scene through distinctive programmes that explore the possible dialogues between the organ and other artistic expressions such as dance, video or electronic music. Her activities as a recitalist have led her from Tokyo to New York and many European countries, without neglecting Africa (Lubumbashi cathedral). Thus she has already played in the Bozar series and at the Ars Musica Festival (both in Brussels), at the Philharmonic Hall in Liège, the Festival de Sablé and the Festival Toulouse les orgues (both in France), as well as the Metropolitan Arts Center and Suntory Hall (Tokyo).
 
Cindy Castillo is in touch with quite a few contemporary composers, leading to several albums and the award “Octave de la musique contemporaine” in 2015. In addition to her activities as a performer, Cindy Castillo can also count on five years experience as producer and host at Musiq3, the Francophone classical radio station in Belgium. She teaches the organ at the IMEP Graduate School of Arts (Namur) and she serves as titular organist at the National Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Brussels.
