Masterminded by Ricardo Villalobos and named after a group of Russian revolutionaries, laptop supergroup Narod Niki made their debut at MUTEK in 2003. Using the then, relatively new Ableton Live software to network their live jam, some of the biggest names in techno participated in this auspicious performance: Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Akufen, Robert Henke, Dimbiman, Dandy Jack, Cabanne, Luciano and Dan Bell. While bootlegs of this recording have been circulating on the web for a while, this is the first time we have released the recording.

In 2011 Amon Tobin made his MUTEK debut with the world premiere of his massive 3D audiovisual behemoth, ISAM.  The original  25′ × 14′ × 8′ set that he performed in acted as the vehicle for his seventh album of the same name — an experimental and accessible ride through invented instrumentation and synthesis. As a live, generative and reactive audio and visual performance, ISAM was narrative, subtle and bombastic. The project took Tobin around the world for two years, finally wrapping up, fittingly, at MUTEK Mexico in October 2013. We are proud to present the audio recording of this unforgettable performance, for the first time.

To celebrate his MUTEK debut, Vanyfox rocked the esplanade Tranquille stage with tracks from his latest EP Banzelo, produced and recorded between Portugal and France. His Batida-infused musical selection also featured unreleased tracks explicitly produced for the occasion.

One of the most pivotal and influential figures in modern electronic music, Carl Craig celebrated his twentieth year during MUTEK’s tenth anniversary in 2009. The most recognizable member of what is commonly known as the second generation of Detroit techno producers, Craig began his career as a teenager apprenticing under techno pioneer Derrick May and quickly established himself as an in-demand producer under aliases such as Psyche, 69, and BFC, before moving on to progressive disco manifestations as Paperclip People and jazz-tinged house as Innerzone Orchestra.    The founder and owner of the highly regarded Planet E label, Craig was also one of the central figures behind the 2000 and 2001 Detroit Electronic Music Festival - legendary showcases that attracted a combined two million people in two years.  In 2007, Craig was nominated for his first Grammy, for his remix of Junior Boys’ “Like a Child”.  We are thrilled to present for the first time, his masterful set at our marquee all-night Saturday program at Métropolis, in 2009.

The deep, immersive echo chamber that sits at the centre of DeepChord’s signature work with Echospace may appear inspired by the genre-defining work of first-wave dub-technoists that appeared on the Chain Reaction label in the mid to late 90s. But it’s also work that’s quintessentially building upon the Detroit scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision makes the work of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell at once so highly considered, so timeless, and so pertinent. The distinguishing feature of the duo’s sound is its ability and willingness to stand still; whereas much of dub techno attempts to propel the listener forward in either a lover’s rock groove or the cushioned reverb of a driving beat, DeepChord’s synth-driven analog warmth trades not only in static ambience but also propulsive design. Their set at Métropolis in 2011 was nothing short of enveloping and transcendent.

MUTEK.ARLIVE - Santiago Bartolomé & Epojé Ft. Luckiboy

apè Aliermo et Daniel Lee reviennent en tant que Phèdre avec Liquid Constancy, une nouvelle performance live brute et semi-improvisée lors de la 26e édition du festival MUTEK en août dernier. Entièrement jouée sur machines, cette performance fusionne la club music, la jungle et le breakbeat en un mélange nerveux de samples et de synthés.

Le duo électronique, basé à Tkaronto/Toronto, est né de la pop expérimentale et a évolué vers des performances instrumentales intenses. Leurs sets, riches en basses et en rythmes imprévisibles, sont une traversée rythmique façonnée par l'instinct et l'énergie du moment.
Leur nouvel album, Liquid Constancy va paraître le 7 novembre 2025.

Montréal-based musician and composer Kara-Lis Coverdale gives concerts made for full body immersion, multi layered through multi timbral synths, her computer a virtual organ engine. Couched in symphonic, post sacred tonalities and harmonies, the music on Coverdale’s releases Aftertouches (on Sacred Phrases) and A 480 (on Constellation Tatsu) uses virtual sounds from vocal and instrumental sources to confront traditional genres and consolidate them in the artist’s own precise ways. Currently an organist and music director at St. John’s church in Montréal, Coverdale contributed piano and keyboards on friend and mentor Tim Hecker’s Virgins album in 2013 and most recently has collaborated with LXV (musician David Sutton) on their 2015 album, released by Umor Rex. Her live set for MUTEK 2015 draws on that album and recent compositions of pipe organ, sensorial electronics and glittering drones while leaving room for inspired improvisation.

Basée à New York, Ma Sha est productrice et DJ. En 2017, elle a fondé Kindergarten, un label qui a également donné naissance à une série de soirées axées sur la musique de club énergique. Elle forme aussi la moitié du duo Sha Ru.
Cet été, MUTEK a eu le privilège d’accueillir son tout premier live solo dans le cadre de la 26e édition à Montréal : une heure d’énergie pure et positive.

Regular readers of tQ might remember that our friends at MUTEK helpfully had someone handy with a tape recorder to capture Factory Floor's comeback set at the 2024 edition of the festival. Well, we're happy to report that they've done done the same again, this time with one of our favourite collaborative duos – James Holden and Wacław Zimpel. The intense, beautiful and burbling set, with modular synths and saxophone dancing in all the bright ecstasy of a winter mountain stream, can be listened to on our Soundcloud below.  " i remember i really enjoyed this one, it was the first show we'd had for a little while and felt quite flowy, a nice connected feeling," reflected James Holden, and his musical partner agrees: "I really loved it," Wacław Zimpel says, "it's always quite amazing to play again after longer break. Breaks gives a room for new ideas to grow spontaneously." They both praise preceding sets by Yu Su and Valentina Magaletti for setting "a great vibe at the venue," as Zimpeł puts it. It came on top of a fine stay in Montreal for the festival. "We immersed ourselves in the local cuisine – poutine – and then climbed the big hill. at the top a guy with a fluorescent cargo bike and a poodle in (also fluorescent) ankle warmers turned up, pumping 90s house out of a Bluetooth speaker. We felt like we'd completed Canada, achievement unlocked."

Basé à Toronto, Raf Reza est DJ, producteur et fondateur du label Orphic Apparition.
Actif depuis plus de dix ans, il mêle folklore bengali, rave et dub dans une approche fluide et déterritorialisée. Son album Ekbar, paru sur Telephone Explosion Records, fusionne les traditions du Bangladesh avec la bass music britannique.

L’émission se compose de deux parties : la première présente sa performance live à MUTEK du 22 août 2025, suivie du prélude à Ekbar enregistré à Tranzac Club.

More: Perälä and Grant Wilson-Claridge from Rephlex developed an alternate tuning system called Colundi–Perälä has based his music on it since 2014.

More than 20 years ago, Rephlex records signed Perälä after he bombarded them with IDM-styled demo tapes under the moniker Ovuca. His palette evolved and expanded into a lush tapestry as Astrobotnia, leading to more minimalist releases under his own name while he studied music technology and experimented away from his classical piano training. With Rephlex co-founder Grant Wilson-Claridge they set off on experiments that tied music theory, philosophy, science and mysticism together, and invented a microtonal tuning system named Colundi.

@segueambient is the name used by Jordan Sauer, an electronic music producer from Vancouver, BC. He creates ambient and dub-techno music with layers of field recordings, acoustic and electronic sounds, creating sonic soundscapes that conjure images of nature and emotions of peace and introspection. He has released numerous solo albums and collaborations with artists from around the world, including three LPs on the Silent Season record label. A high point of his career was the 2013 release of the dub-techno album Pacifica and the following performance at Mutek the following year, captured here in this live recording. In 2020, Jordan was commissioned by Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre to produce Gene Machines - an album based on field recordings and atmospheric sounds from one of the most advanced genetic research labs in Canada.

Presented as part of STREAM ON, a project by MUTEK, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
