Balancing studious musical exploration with an accessible party-friendly approach and expert sense of rhythm, Lao's grab bag of influences includes everything from IDM, bass, trap, grime, horror movie scores and dub techno to reggaeton, carnaval beats and pentatonic scales. In his latest work, Lao takes heavy influence from trap, rave and drum’n’bass, grabbing them by the neck, shaking them up, and spitting them back out as his own inimitable sound that also manages to distill the urban thrill of living in Mexico City.
A self-taught producer and DJ since the early 2000s, he has become a key personality in the Mexican electronic music community as well as a regarded producer. A key member of N.A.A.F.I. and owner of Extasis Records, in 2010 Robles founded #401.MX, a platform for underground electronic music in Mexico and the first site specializing in promoting homegrown electronic music. A graduate of the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy held in Tokyo, Japan he has since toured internationally with some of his N.A.A.F.I. compatriots, spreading their chilango gospel.
Treading the line between tense, cinematic musical environments and celebratory fiesta, Lao brings his unique energy to MUTEK with a live set of his original material as part of the N.A.A.F.I. showcase.

Haunted, multi-layered and intricate, Driftmachine synch modular synth units in a tandem of techno, Eastern European inflection, dub and drone that run like a clockwork of perpetual motion, bass-drenched styles underpinned by skeletal polyrhythmic patterns.

A shared exploration of modular systems created the tectonic shift that drew Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer together and took them outside the realm of their previous genre inclinations. Friends and peers since the early nineties, has both have pedigree in pop-electronic crossover projects. Gerth, also a visual artist has performed as a member of the Tied & Tickled Trio as well as working on a variety of sound installations and montages, including a commission for Bavarian Radio. Zimmer, a drummer and keyboardist by previous trades also worked for a time with Berlin label Morr Music. Debuting on record in 2014 with a steady stream of followups since, Driftmachine are sometimes joined on stage by visual artist Mika Shkurat who plays a third modular system to control video. In all circumstances, Driftmachine's fidelity to modularity, and their talents with taming their volatile machine-beasts reveal them as synthesist savants.

Likened to an exorcism of modular conjuring, Driftmachine live unfurls ominous, monochrome sound sculptures from their machines, creating uncannily psychedelic effects.

The lighting and sound properties of the spiral were optimized to be used as optical and acoustic instruments, as well as a surrounding experience of spaces, geometry, and light.

With the release of the EP, Sunder (Ninja Tune, 2018), Nathan Fake arrives at year XV of his career with his sound in full form. Implacable techno makes its way between the ethereal and emotional density of ambient and lo-fi that have characterized Fake since “The Sky was Pink”, a 2003 track devoted to DJ sets by James Holden. Fake’s discography is a kaleidoscope, each installment of which shows new forms and nuances in a combination of hard rhythms and dreamy textures. Performances, either live or as a DJ, transform into ceremonies uniting dance fans of Boards of Canada, Seefel, and Fennez with fans of The Field, Squarepusher and the most clinging of techno-heads. Six years after its presentation at MUTEK.MX Edition (2012), an exciting reunion awaits in November, with Fake as part of the Ninja Tune roster after performing one of the most outstanding acts at summer festivals like Dekmantel, Green Man and Roskilde.

International Tribe / Siete Catorce Starting at the age of 22, Siete Catorce is the alternative project of producer and experimentalist Marco Polo Gutierrez. Through initially taking inspiration from new cumbia, the artists sound began to form a unique and signature style, with a mesh of tropical rhythms and intricate drum works. Taking influences from the techniques of dubstep, drum n bass, and footwork (to name a few), Siete Catorce has quickly scaled the ranks of Mexico’s electronic music elite.

With releases on labels such as Cocobass, Naafi, Enchufada, and Hypermedium, the Mexico native also produces under the alias Den5hion, an airy and lugubrious portrayal of dubstep, with influences from the likes of Burial and Sin Amigos. For his International Tribe mix, the Mexican artist explores the realms of tropical rhythms with experimental, glitchy and killer cuts.

Microhm is but one of the sonorous pseudonyms of Mexican artist, Leslie García, known for her work in the media arts as part of the collectives, Interspecifics and Astrovandalistas. In the world of experimental electronics, she’s released work as LogarDecay on labels like Umor Rex (Mexico) and HayleTapes (France). With Microhm, García has developed electronic music that derives from influences like new wave, noise, and techno, and from a perspective of abstraction complemented by improvisation sessions. These make for an always-changing and dislocated live act. The debut EP, Eternal Night, is to be edited by the Mexican label, Static Discos.

Milena Pafundi is a transdisciplinary artist based in Buenos Aires. She works in audiovisual media across live performance, installation, theatre and dance. She also brings a profound interest in social issues, human rights and gender advocacy to her creations, working freelance in cultural projects related to art and technology and as a video journalist. She founded the Articiclo Collective and teaches visual arts from a gendered perspective.

From his first experiences as a record seller in the former East Germany of the late 1990s, to being the go-to representative of Berlin's legendary Hard Wax record shop, he was also resident DJ at the famed club, Berghain. Dettmann has been there at every key moment in the history of German Techno.
Crude, hard, and with no sense of the taboo, Dettmann's mystique is still always shrouded. A living force of the vertical, direct, brutal aesthetic that's proved transcendent around the world, he's been chosen to remix Moderat, Junior Boys, Fever Ray, Ellen Allien, Clark and even the emblematic Laibach in the era after industrial music. In 2015, producers Liz Gómez and Ivonne Valdez began a creative online exchange which resulted in their first sound works; glitches and hybrid textures to form soundscapes inspired by paintings and drawings. After some invitations from festivals, and a few successful encounters between coding and electronic music, they created Bioluminik, the alias under which they’ve focused on the creation of their own experimental narratives. With remixes of artists like Nima Ikki and deep conceptual pieces in audiovisual formats, Gómez and Valdez have taken a transdisciplinary approach to the aesthetic universe of Bioluminik, inspired mainly by the nature and aesthetics of error, and influenced by space music, drone, and dark ambient.

Robert Lippok's sonic explorations and musical work channel and transform the rawness of his roots in the Industrial and Post-Punk scenes of East Germany and the newly unified Berlin, where he co-founded iconic bands Ornament, Verbrechen and To Rococo Rot. Converting all the baggage and energy into solo work resulted in broad body of work which draws that strength back to its most architectural and abstract forms. In Applied Autonomy (Raster Media, 2018), his first new release in seven year, Lippok takes a high modular technique toward a true "static frenzy", a vanishing point at which the work acquires the energy which transforms works with all the new layers and tones, and which progresses works ultimately toward their true autonomy. Under this principle, Lippok added collaborations with Luca Gutierrez on the art and visual aspects, and with Klara Lewis on the track "Samtal", a dual exploration of nearly fifteen minutes that extracts the sound of "applied autonomy" and juxtaposes the creative energies of both Lewis and Lippok.

In Bilingüe, the creative languages of producer Isaac Soto and biologist and visual artist Inés Gutiérrez come together from Gutiérrez’s Cirrina Lab. Both artists take naturalistic sampling as a pivotal part of their creative process: Cirrina Lab extracts images of microscopic living beings live, and transforms them into hypnotic, forceful animated pieces. Soto collects field recordings to fuse them into downtempo tracks replete with texture. And from this shared dynamic, Cirrina Lab & Isaac Soto have generated an audiovisual range that swings between harmony and abstraction: a micro-macro cosmos of image and sound that reveals itself in the immersive experience. Among recent releases from both artists, highlights include the Cirrina Lab video clip for "All hands" from AMNL PRNT, and Soto’s EP,  El mítico manzano newtoniano (The Mythical Newtonian Apple Tree), with which he launched VAA, his recording label.

Hospital Productions has been one of the most relevant gears within the world of experimental noise in recent years. Home to Kevin Drumm, Silent Servant, Ron Morelli, Merzbow, Dedekind Cut and dozens of others, it's where Dominick Fernow, the label head, developed his most notable project, Prurient. 20 years in, Prurient has found refuge within every variant of darkness, from industrial noise, to visceral vocal attacks, and even an exploration of dark meditative places. Fernow summarizes his style as “Doom Electronics” which start with the powerful and destructive dynamic of the dark side of the avant-garde and always avoiding touching bottom in their vertiginous falls. It leaves space for a contemplation of both texture and often suffocating frequencies.

Itzel Noyz aka Naerlot, Valeria Vicente and Irinea Pérez are part of the creative flow that oxygenates the digital sound and art circuit in Mexico City. Together they present Unity, a live A/V that premiered as part of Hellow World 2019 in which analog and digital processes converge to generate a deep immersive atmosphere.

Naerlot creates aural constellations from live processed voice while Ultrachina (Valeria and Irinea) generate a visual counterpoint that combines techniques ranging from liquid light show and manipulated found footage to digital glitch. Thus, Unity is never the same A/V, transforming itself into a fluid entity that, from the conceptual impulse given by its creators, seeks to convey a message of equity that inspires “human transcendence beyond what individually defines us”.

Few contemporary laptop artists have attained the stature and universal respect that have greeted Austrian experimental guitarist Christian Fennesz. Beginning his music career in the Viennese underground as a member of the avant-rock group Maische, Fennesz soon broke away to solo undertakings in the then-nascent laptop experimentation scene, producing abrasive and often clinical sessions that began with the guitar only to be manipulated beyond recognition. He found early notoriety on the Austrian Mego imprint with releases such as Hotel Paral.lel and Fennesz Plays (in which he reinterpreted the Rolling Stones and Beach Boys), before finding larger audiences as a member of the well-received Fenn O’Berg, a trio consisting of Fennesz, Jim O’Rourke, and Mego label boss Peter Rehberg. After a steady ascent through the late-90s, Christian Fennesz hit the stratosphere with the release of 2001’s Endless Summer, an album that was universally accepted as an instant classic of modern electronic music. Since then, Fennesz has stayed at the forefront of digital production solo and with collaborative works with artists such as OZmotic and King Midas Sound. His comeback to Mexico City as part of MUTEK MX Edition 16 is marked by the release of Agora, a collection of four tracks produced in his bedroom and his first solo album since 2014, bringing back his most intimist, crystalline and essential sound. In this performance, Fennesz is accompanied by experimental video artist Ali M. Demirel, in a totally new collaboration that also represents new challenges for Ali, a regular contributor to minimal techno lives.

Ali M. Demirel stormed the video art circuit as director of the most iconic clips and video-scenographies of Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman. His background in nuclear engineering and architecture are a strong influence on his style, which has evolved in platforms, video installations and live performances in large format.
