Raw Poetic (Jason Moore) and P-Fritz (Patrick Fritz) hail from the Northern Virginia/DC metro area. The pair has been collaborating on experimental hip-hop for the better part of two decades more than often with Damu the Fudgemunk providing live/programmed drums and production/exec production. Raw Poetic’s ability to melodically narrate everyday life in the kaleidoscope of the modern world is uniquely matched by P-Fritz's ability to consistently supply the musical landscapes for this storytelling. Progressive and filled with soul, this collaboration is unlike any other. 

The duo met after college through mutual friends and formed the progressive hip-hop band Restoring Poetry in Music (RPM) with a few other artists. The first album from this collaboration was entitled Dream Awake (2004). Raw Poetic and P-Fritz continued this musical conversation over the years with P-Fritz leading the rhythm sections of RPM and Panacea. P-Fritz contributed guitar tracks for Panacea’s albums Ink is My Drink (2006) and The Scenic Route (2007). After a solid 10 years of performing and recording together, the duo decided to focus on mastering their individual talents. While Raw Poetic continued collaborating, writing, and focusing on production, P-Fritz renewed his focus on classical guitar performance, jazz improvising, and hip-hop production.

While the two artists maintained a consistent friendship and occasionally collaborated over the next several years, it wasn’t until their collaboration on the critically acclaimed Ocean Bridges (2021) featuring Archie Shepp that they rediscovered their unique chemistry and extraordinary ability to fill a musical niche. By 2022, they were once again in full creation mode, working together on Raw Poetic’s self-produced Laminated Skies (2022) and Space Beyond the Solar System (2023), which was produced by Damu the Fudgemunk. With no signs of slowing down, the two will release their next full album entitled Away Back In in 2023.

Away Back In can be described as a garage rock album enveloped in hip-hop jazz. The opening single, “Ease Side,” reignites and re-energizes the jazz elements of their recent work: P-Fritz’s smooth guitar riffs and bass lines lay the foundation for Raw Poetic to dissect the emotions of a worry-free relationship. In "Bird's Eye," an exploration of the chaos of the end of time, the guitars overdrive, creating a haunting echo and contrasting the mood of the opener.

At times, it’s difficult to disentangle the jazz from the rock, creating a transcendent musical fusion underpinned by the adroit drum programming of Damu the Fudgemunk. Lyrics are seamlessly sung and spoken, taking listeners on a dark and mellifluous journey. Expanding out from these themes while continuing to explore the myriad of everyday experiences, “Sometime After Midnight” questions the definition of racism in America. 

Despite the density of the album’s darker themes, hope springs eternal in songs like the title track, “Away Back In,” a celebration of the long history of these two friends and their musical journey together, despite coming from two very different communities in a starkly divided nation. The playful “The Dank-ish'' allows the listener to kick back with Raw Poetic without overthinking the woes of life. The album’s closer, “Human Kindness,” ends this musical journey with the unlikely marriage of folk guitar and hip-hop, providing the listener with a stunning optimistic look on human nature. 
At its core, this album is a conversation between old friends. It’s a back-to-basics creation by a group that enjoys a place outside of the spotlight but always in the consciousness of their listeners. 

Having sold out the Jazz Café in London, April 1st 2023. And an in-depth interview and an appearance on Gilles Peterson’s show (BBC 6 Music) Away Back In will be released under Def Pressé in August 2023.
