"Cake" was a New York band formed in 1973, following a line-up tweak and a change from their previous name "Mixed Company» (referring to the racially diverse personell). At Arabellum Studios in Colony, Albany, NY, the band recorded their only 7-inch single. "Make Up Your Mind" / "Let Your Body Go» was released on Key Records in 1979. 

Half a life time later, after appearing in DJ mixes and online auctions in the late 2000s, the single started gaining notoriety among DJs and diggers. Working its way up to "holy grail" status on the modern soul and disco collector scene, original copies of the sought after record would eventually sell for as high as $1000.

In 2012, Hans Jørgen Wærner (Mutual Intentions Co-Founder and notorious disco collector) got in touch with Arabellum studio owner Art Snay who produced the record. This lead him to lead singer Bob Treffiletti who had a cassette tape with unreleased long versions of the songs. The sound quality of the tape was not adequate for what Hans had in mind, and so the hunt for the original master tapes began! Unfortunately, Art Snay later passed away. At one point chances of finding the original recordings seemed so slim, the project was all but abandoned…. 

Luckily, Bob managed to get hold of the master tapes via Art's wife and they were sent away to legendary disco mixer / remixer John Morales, who transferred the tape to digital format. After several rounds in one of Norway's best mastering studios (Strype Audio), noise reduction and sound surgery were done while retaining the soul of the original recordings. The songs were finally ready to be pressed on the format they have always deserved: the 12-inch disco single!

The elusive American artist weaves classic House music influences through vintage sound machines for this rarified diptych. Moving between the EP and the 12,” Kurtiss takes us from the early evening into peak time with an emphasis on high fidelity and expressive sojourns through the dance floor. The enticing package ushers in a new era for Kurtiss’ music, sealing his future in wax, and bringing his music to a bigger audience through the Mutual Intentions franchise.

Following a limited 7” vinyl release of SunPalace edits in 2020, BBE Music finally delivers the full-length versions of Moodymann and Kenny Dope’s ‘Rude Movements’ remixes, alongside brand new interpretations by François K, Frankie Feliciano and OPOLOPO, plus a special edit by Phil Asher.

François Kevorkian needs no introduction to fans of House and electronic music. Featuring keys by Eric Kupper, his ‘SATS Dub’ and ‘TradMix’ versions of ‘Rude Movements’ are simply classic works, summoning House music’s golden era forward in time, to the here and now. Bonus spaced-out ‘Flerken Space Bubbles’ and beat-less ‘Atmosphere’ revisions are also included in the digital version: both invaluable tools for DJs. Ricanstruction label founder and long-time champion of the good groove, Frankie Feliciano delivers a slick and faithful update of ‘Rude Movements’, with a slight Latin soul twist. Swedish mix-king OPOLOPO turns in a typically live-sounding, funky and dancefloor-ready jam (ready whenever the dancefloor is, anyway) The full, extended version of Moodymann’s remix retains the original ‘jammed’ feel of Rude Movements, adding stellar flute, sax and piano solos to that hypnotic vibe. Kenny Dope’s Afro-Latin inspired ‘Dancefloor Powder’ version is joined this time by a rough’n’ready, street tough ‘O’Gutta’ mix; calling all b-boys and b-girls! For the expanded digital package, we are also including a special edit by our sorely missed brother Phil Asher, created for his own DJ sets and now available to all.

Made famous by David Mancuso at his New York Loft Parties, ‘Rude Movements’ was an obscure Brit-funk b-side recorded in the home studio of Mike Collins. The track’s unique sound, coupled with pristine sonics and production values caught the audiophile ears of Mancuso, and the rest is history. Soon the track found its way into the hands of Loft Party denizens Larry Levan, Nicky Siano, Frankie Knuckles and Danny Krivit and continues to influence House and electronic producers through to this day.

SunPalace - Rude Movements (OPOLOPO Remix)

Broken beat pioneer, Afronaut, returns in full force for Brighton's long established purveyors of fine sounds, Tru Thoughts, with a lesson in dancefloor rocking production.

Afronaut, aka Orin Walters,  founding member of both the bruk supergroup Bugz in the Attic and the pioneering trio Neon Phusion, makes his debut on Tru Thoughts with club-stomper “How It Goes”. 

Following on from his collaboration with mentee and “honorary Bug" WheelUP on the summer-groove “Good Love”, “How It Goes” is the start of a partnership between the bruk legend and Tru Thoughts, a label whose output has been known for championing the West London Sound.

Tru Thoughts honcho had this to say about working with Orin: “I have always been a big fan of Afronaut and many of his songs have been anthems at my club residencies in Brighton. Orin has been mentoring WheelUP so to connect through that album has led to Tru Thoughts now working with him on some forthcoming releases which are sounding amazing. Orin is still pushing musical boundaries and this track is just the start.”

"How It Goes" by Afronaut is out this week. We can't wait to hear what's the next, but we'll certainly be rocking this in the meantime.

MIMS is excited to premiere a brilliant new remix from pioneering broken beat producer and Bugz in the attic founder, Daz-I-Kue, for Portuguese producer Fradingo. Featuring the brilliant vocals of another broken beat legend, Colonel Red. 

Daz should need little introduction to fans of broken beat and far beyond, thanks to his history as a pioneer of the broken beat sound, both solo and with Bugz in the attic, his residency at legendary broken beat party, Co-Op, the hugely successful DKD project with Dego and Kaidi Tatham and countless remixes, for the likes of Marcos Valle, Frank-N-Dank, El-B, Ty, Dele Sosimi & Medlar, Mark De Clive-Lowe, and 4Hero. Not forgetting his soul, boogie and funk orientated BB Boogie project.

A singer AND producer with esteemed pedigree in funk, soul and electronica, Colonel Red has worked alongside an impressive list of artists including Teddy Pendergrass, Anita Baker, Bugz In The Attic, Amp Fiddler, Alex Attias, Daz-I-Kue himself, and many more besides. Four albums now bear his name, among them his debut for legendary broken beat label, People, Tokyo Dawn Records, and recently Inkswel's Inner Tribe Records, in collaboration  with the very same producer. 

Hailing from and now back in Portugal after a long tenure in London, Fradinho is a DJ, producer and self-described broken beat fanatic, who has remixed the likes of  Glasgow's Nimbus Sextet, and Str4ta , a collaboration between Gilles Peterson and Incognito's Jean-Paul Maunick aka Bluey, inspired by 80s Brit Funk,

‘Caminhos’ is a tribute to the late samba composer Catoni, featuring the masters lush vocal & guitar samples (with the permission of his family). Premiere: Àbáse - Caminhos (for Catoni)

Far Out Recordings presents a double bill of two monumental Brit funk classics. Keep In Touch and Stay were the first two 12” singles by the iconic Freeez, both self-funded passion projects of its founding member John Rocca, for his own Pink Rhythm imprint. 

It all started over the counter at Derek’s Records on Petticoat Lane, London in the mid-70s. Rocca - at the time a budding teenage percussionist - met the prolific guitarist, composer, producer and all round brit funk fixer Jean Paul “Bluey” Maunick (also the father of Far Out producer Daniel Maunick). Best known as the founding member of Light of the World, Incognito, and more recently Str4ta, Bluey’s involvement in the origins of Freeez are lesser known, but no less crucial. Bluey invited Rocca to a weekly jam session in an East London basement, where they would develop their craft, form their first band Freeez and develop the idea for ‘Keep In Touch’: “Back in the basement there was this one particular track we were playing that I really loved. It had a groove that I thought I could sell” Rocca reminisces.

Going against the advice of all the musicians involved, who thought he was mad and set to lose all his money, John decided to go full DIY, hire out a high end studio in the West End to record ‘Keep In Touch’ and release it as a private press, birthing his now famed Pink Rhythm label. Featuring Bluey on guitar, Peter Maas on bass, Paul Morgan on drums, Jason Wright on keyboards, and John Rocca on percussion, Keep In Touch was a surprise underground hit selling over 5000 copies and reaching #49 in the UK, leading Freeez into a record deal with Pye / Calibre. 

Still giddy from the experience of having produced and pressed his first record at the age of just 19, John set out to do it all again with ‘Stay’ and ‘Hot Footing’, enlisting Bluey & co once again. This time Rocca attempted to take things to the next level by adding vocals into the mix. Though this new arrangement initially backfired and cost John the deal with Pye / Calibre who weren’t feeling the slight change of vibe, original copies of the Stay 12” have become one of the most in demand from the brit funk canon.

These foundational DIY 12” singles paved the way for Freeez to become a household name in the history of British funk who went on to record hits like ‘Southern Freeze’ and ‘IOU’ as well as underground cult classics like ‘Melodies of Love’ and ‘India’ as Pink Rhythm, John Rocca’s later formation of Freeez named after his imprint. 

Far Out will be releasing a very limited run of exclusive Pink Rhythm T-shirts, alongside the two 12”s, both redesigned in the style of the original private presses.

Stay

Australian jazz funk ensemble Kerbside Collection return with dusty grooves of “Round The Corner”, the second single to be taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album of the same name, following the lush & laidback “‘Glaze”.

Referring to some of the ‘unknowns’ and ‘uncertainties’ around the corner post cv-19, “Round The Corner” is also an uplifting groove affirmation looking forward to the positive things, and seasons to come round these kinds of unknown corners, and the new year ahead.  

In contrast to the cruisy, layered and cinematic first single, ‘Round The Corner’ is a tight, dancy, uptempo, jazz funk burner featuring the group’s core trio raw and upfront. The Rubbery, pulsating electric bass guitar of Lachlan Symons, the silky Fender rhodes (and acoustic piano solo), jazzy guitar licks guitar of Andrew Fincher, and the gritty, razor sharp grooves and percussion of drummer paprika, are all wrapped up into this dancefloor-friendly, contemporary live jazz funk track.

“Round The Corner” embodies some of the current resurgence of live jazz-house crossover sounds coming out of Australia (Horatio Luna, First Beige etc), whilst also reminiscent of Incognito, The Rebirth and Herbie Hancock’s 70’s jazz fusion years. Another sumptuous taste of what to expect on this special new record from ‘down-under’ out on modern funk and soul label Légère Recordings.

Back behind the drums and swinging harder than ever, with his new titanium hip crowdfunded by the immense generosity of friends and fans, brazilian drumming legend and one third of Azymuth Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti releases a brand new solo album next year with Far Out Recordings. It’s his first solo release in over twenty years and the first to come out on vinyl since his 1984 Milestone classic The Human Factor. As people of earth may not quite be ready for the explosive cosmic samba of Mamão’s new album just yet, we’re easing into it with a double header of heavily percussive, future-centric, jazz-minded, yet club-ready remixes. 

Following on from the IG Culture meets 22a remix EP released earlier this year, the second remix 12” ahead of Mamão’’s album release, hosts three producers united not only by a foundational appreciation for the work of Ivan Conti and Azymuth, but also in the belief that there’s much more to dance music than straight four to the floor. These are two of Germany’s most consistently on-fire producers: Money Sex Records buddies Max Graef and Glenn Astro, along with the ascendant Mancunian producer/percussionist Contours. With Mamão’s famously jovial character shining through each remix, the EP spans hip-hop, deep house, jazz-funk and afro-brasilian rhythms, giving the listener a taste of what’s to come from Mamão’s much anticipated new album in 2018.

"I started by recording myself playing drums on a Tascam 16-track 1” tape machine and ran some of the microphone signals through an Electro-Harmonix Memory Man pedal. I wrote an accompanying part on a Wurlitzer 200 electric piano and added that on top, followed by bass guitar, ARP strings, and a lead synth line. It’s a smooth mellow funk groove for cruising and chilling.”
