Hailing from Germany, Anja's career began in the radio booths of Kiss FM and now the world-renowned Mobilee Records boss is tearing down clubs and festivals worldwide with her impeccable selection, lively personality and incredible technical ability. It's hard to believe, but somehow we seem to be living in a time leap... A time leap that already brings us the eighth (!) edition of the Cocoon in-house Mix-CD series. And it's almost as if the first editions have just been released – especially if you listen to them from a today's point of view –, as the tracks of the first Cocoon Recordings Mix-CDs appear very contemporary even in 2013, and not at all outdated, let alone eight years old. Of course, this is above all praise from within our own ranks, but we would like to claim proudly that Cocoon Recordings still manages to present Techno and Tech-House in a timeless look, against all odds. And that whets our appetite for a new edition of this CD series!
Just as with its predecessor, Chris Tietjen was responsible for selecting and mixing the tracks, being deeply ingrained in Cocoon since his teenage days. And even more than with its predecessors, Tietjen manages to draw a big line and to reconcile the sometimes very heterogenous Cocoon Recordings releases. The great gap that Techno fans might see between tracks by Stefanik, Ambivalent and Secret Cinema is skilfully bridged in the mix by Tietjen's combination of tracks, and is even beneficial for the flow of the mix. This diversion is typical for Cocoon: a lot of variety within the set, using only musical material from one single label, without ever losing the tension.
Of course, Stefanik's contributions and the tracks by Mark Broom or Maetrik stand out a little bit, but this is also a sign of a good mix: to find the right proportion between a fluent passage and similar styles on the hand and variety on the other. To stay in the flow but never become monotonuos.
That's why the eighth edition of this in-house Mix-CD series is fully dedicated to the label's philosophy and to all the Cocoon DJs' philosophy who defy all these "Style-DJs" and their loop Techno and Ableton monotony, but rather bring in their sets great variety and a wide range of music. These sets all have a special stamp and bear the hallmarks of their DJs, but they still manage – just as the other Cocoon Mix-CDs – to bring different styles together and this is probably why they appear so timeless... when you listen to them again, many years later.

ACHT

New York City–based producer Ford Scott makes his label debut with four club-ready weapons that fuse deep minimal grooves with high-energy drive. Drawing inspiration from 90s house while adding his own modern edge, Ford has caught the attention of some of the scene’s biggest names with his innovative basslines, meticulous sound design, and relentless dancefloor focus.

The A-side opens with Watch Out, a crafty, rolling bassline paired with sleek, layered synth work and captivating sound design. Next up, Work That Body delivers suspense-filled builds and explosive drops, pairing hypnotic vocal chops with a punchy bassline for a full-throttle dancefloor weapon.

On the B-side, The Message channels 90s hip-hop swagger into a groovy, bass-driven cut with intricate melodic textures and fluid, evolving atmospheres. Closing out the EP, Can’t Sit Down turns up the heat with futuristic synth stabs, a driving low end, and a tightly-wound arrangement that refuses to let the energy drop.

3 QUESTIONS to TIMO MAAS:

Q: Talking about your mix: Why did you choose these tracks and how did they shape you back in the days?

A: I have chosen those, as every single one of them gave me very special moments and memories back in the days. I had endless thoughts before mixing this one down, which ones I will include in this mix, and I can honestly tell you, that probably today or tomorrow, the mix would be different again. After nearly 40 years of DJing and music collecting, there's obvisiously soooo many more that have a special meaning to me.

Q: In times of Corona lockdown: How do you spend your time at home and which positive effect may this period have for all of us?

A: It's a difficult time obvisiously, knowing that my main business will be dead worldwide most likely for at least the rest of this year. But it's also time for changes, new ideas, new challenges. Thats what life is about. I am 100% that there will be something good, but very different coming out of this. Our „normality“ that we will reach again in a while will not be the „normality“ we used to know.

Q: On which projects are you currently working on, so: What to expect from Timo Maas in the future?

A: I am in fact working on a whole bunch of new releases. May, 1st there's a new release of 3 brand new Techno tracks of mine on MusicIsForLovers incl great remixes by Tiefschwarz & Anja Schneider. Stripped Down Rec will release my track "UTOPIE". Also here are strong remixes in the making. Music video is done already. Also working right now on a Remix for Rodriguez Jr., one for Placebo's Stefan Olsdal feat Digital 21, and a whole bunch of other Projects. Keeping myself busy. Some of you know that I love cooking / food so much. So for my Instagram page @timolovescooking i am planning some special features. Nothing really to do with music.
