David Otieno Guoro (born February 12,1992) better known as Mwakenya is Kenyan musician,poet and writer. He hails from Kawangware, Nairobi,Kenya. His name Mwakenya is a short form of ‘Mwana-Kenya’, a Swahili word for ‘Kenyan-born.
He is the last-born in a family of five siblings, Mwakenya grew up in a christian/catholic family. As a youth he, was drawn to Hiphop music by his elder brother, who was a partial rapper then. He was also streamlined by the squalid living conditions in his neighbourhood. Musically, he got inspiration/influenced by rap artists such as Common,Talib Kwali,Lupe Fiasco,Dead Prez,Nas, Cassidy and other African musicians such as Eric Wainaina,Oliver Ntukudzi,K-shaka and K-south, among many others.
Mwakenya went to Agoro Sare H.Sch in Nyanza province,Kenya where he interacted with several rappers within the institution and started rapping and writting lyrics as part of his leisure/part time activity. After his fouth year in November 2010,he went back to Nairobi to get-down with music as he waited for his high school final results.
He wrote,recorded and released the first ever spoken word album My first Pieces –April 2011, four months after high school. The spoken word album was written in English, Kiswahili and in local slung known as Sheng. The album gave him great exposure as a rapidly emerging artist ,as it was featured in big radio shows in Kenya and East Africa such as Mseto Extra hosted by Mzazi Willy M. Tuva on RADIO CITIZEN one of the top radio stations in Kenya that cover the whole of East Africa.
He has also performed at various venues including SLAM AFRICA POETRY NIGHT,CHARITY/NGOs EVENTS in Kawangware and on radio/Tv shows and interviews such as MSANI NA SANAA on NTV hosted by LOLANI KALU,99DEGREES on K24 TV,IZ VIPI XL MASHARIKI on KTN,HIPHOP TUESDAY(Radio citizen) hosted by Willy m.Tuva and IZ VIPI/FREESTYLE FRIDAY(Radio maisha) hosted by Peter Adamz.
His first song and music video ‘TAKE-OVER’ was controversial with claims of it being a shot taken at Kibera’s Octoppizo.
He is currently working on his first mixtape ‘25RAW’ that he claims will be one of a kind touching on all aspects of life. Besides rap he’s also a great song-writer and poet. He does create his own quotes and maxims e.g ‘ when the mind is fresh, the flesh ain’t stressed’& ‘we only differ in mind, not physique’....he too has plans of giving back to the society by starting up a youth organization in Kawangware ‘SANAA MTAA YOUTH ORG.’ That will primarily focus on youth empowerment through art in Kawangware and probably beyond....
