The Xinjiang internment camps,[a] officially called Xinjiang Vocational Education and Training Centers (Chinese: 新疆职业技能教育培训中心[11]) by the government of China,[12][13][14][15] are internment camps operated by the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region government and its Chinese Communist Party (CCP) provincial committee. Human Rights Watch says that they have been used to indoctrinate Uyghurs and other Muslims since 2017 as part of a "people's war on terror," a policy announced in 2014.[2][16][17] The camps have been criticized by many countries and human rights organizations for alleged human rights abuses, mistreatment, rape, and torture, with some alleging genocide. Some countries have expressed support for the camps.[18][19]

The camps were established under CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping's administration.[17] Operations are led by Chen Quanguo, a CCP Politburo member and CCP committee secretary who leads the Party committee and government in the region.[20] The camps are reportedly operated outside the legal system; many Uyghurs have reportedly been interned without trial and no charges have been levied against them (held in administrative detention).[21][22][23] Local authorities are reportedly holding hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs in these camps as well as members of other ethnic minority groups, for the stated purpose of countering extremism and terrorism[24][25] and promoting social integration.[26][27][28]
As of 2019, it was estimated that Chinese authorities may have detained up to 1.5 million people, mostly Uyghurs but also including Kazakhs, Kyrgyz and other ethnic Turkic Muslims, Christians as well as some foreign citizens such as Kazakhstanis, who are being held in these secretive internment camps which are located throughout the region.[29] In May 2018, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Randall Schriver said "at least a million but likely closer to three million citizens" were imprisoned in detention centers, which he described as "concentration camps".[5][6] In August 2018, Gay McDougall, a US representative at the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, said that the committee had received many credible reports that 1 million ethnic Uyghurs in China have been held in "re-education camps".[30][31] There have been comparisons between the Xinjiang camps and the Chinese Cultural Revolution.[32][33][34][35][36]

In 2019 at the United Nations, 54 countries, including China itself,[37] rejected the allegations and supported the Chinese government's policies in Xinjiang. In another letter, 23 countries shared the concerns in the committee's reports and called on China to uphold human rights.[38][39] In September 2020, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) reported in its Xinjiang Data Project that construction of camps continued despite government claims that their function was winding down.[40] In October 2020, it was reported that the total number of countries that denounced China increased to 39, while the total number of countries that defended China decreased to 45. Sixteen countries that defended China in 2019 did not do so in 2020.[41]

Ad Absurdum EP

Dave Kunst (born July 16, 1939) is the first person independently verified to have walked around the Earth.[1] The walk was intended to be achieved along with his brother John, but during the event John was shot and killed by bandits, and Dave wounded; Dave resumed and completed the walk with another brother, Peter. His walk was officially stated to be 14,452 miles (23,258 km).[2]

Kunst's walk may not have been the first circumnavigation by foot, in particular Guinness World Records mentions George Matthew Schilling[2] as being reputed to have circumnavigated the globe between 1897 and 1904.
Kunst's trek began June 20, 1970, and ended October 5, 1974. Dave started his journey in Waseca, Minnesota with his brother John, a letter of recommendation from US Senator Hubert Humphrey, a scroll to be signed by officials along the way, $1000 and a mule named Willie Makeit carrying camping supplies.

The brothers walked to New York City with Willie Makeit, then flew to Portugal, where they acquired a second mule (Willie stayed home). Dave and John walked across Europe and visited Monaco, where they met Princess Grace, and Italy, where they encountered Thor Heyerdahl.

During their travels, the brothers asked people to send donations to UNICEF; a reporter in Afghanistan mistakenly wrote that they collected and carried them.[citation needed] John was killed when bandits shot him in the mountains of Afghanistan in October 1972. Dave was shot in the chest during the same attack, but survived by playing dead. After spending four months recovering from his injuries, Dave resumed his journey along with his brother Peter, from the spot where John was killed. As they continued their travels, Dave and Peter were denied access to the Soviet Union, so they flew from India to Australia.

Peter returned home during the Australia-leg of the trek, where Dave continued on alone, by this time on his third mule. Unfortunately, the mule died and Dave was left hauling his wagon of supplies himself. He was on the verge of abandoning his supplies, when he fortuitously met Jenni Samuel, a schoolteacher from Perth. She helped pull his wagon with her car, while he walked alongside. Dave returned to Australia for a year after completing his journey. Jenni and Dave later married and are still together as of 2013.[3]

"I walked 20 million steps" Dave says, figuring 31 steps per 100 feet "I wore out 21 pairs of shoes but I proved something to myself: If a human being makes up his mind, is determined, sets goals, he can walk around the world."

The brothers were commemorated in June 2004 with a sign in their hometown of Caledonia, Minnesota. The inscription reads: "Caledonia: Birthplace of the Earthwalkers David, Peter and John Kunst."

The splatter film has its aesthetic roots in French Grand Guignol theatre, which endeavored to stage realistic scenes of blood and carnage for its patrons. In 1908, Grand Guignol made its first appearance in England, although the gore was downplayed in favor of a more Gotance (1916), which features numerous Guignol-esque touches, including two onscreen decapitations, and a scene in which a spear is slowly driven through a soldier's naked abdomen as blood wells from the wound. Several of Griffith's subsequent films, and those of his contemporary Cecil B. ifs by groundbreaking films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and the output of Hammer Film Productions (an artistic outgrowth of the English Grand Guignol style) such as The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and Horror of Dracula (1958). Perhaps the most explicitly violent film of this era was Nobuo Nakagawa's Jigoku (1960), which included numerous scenes of flaying and dismemberment in its depiction of the Buddhist underworld Naraka.itable niche, Lewis turned to something that mainstream cinema still rarely featured: scenes of visceral, explicit gore. The term Iblīs (Arabic: إِبْلِيس‎) may have been derived from the Arabic verbal root bls ب-ل-س (with the broad meaning of "remain in grief")[8] or بَلَسَ (balasa, "he despaired").[9] Furthermore, the name is related to talbis meaning confusion.[10] Another possibility is that it is derived from Ancient Greek διάβολος (diábolos), via a Syriac intermediary,[11] which is also the source of the English word 'devil'.[12]

Yet another possibility relates this name back to the bene Elohim (Sons of God), who had been identified with fallen angels in the early centuries, but had been singularised under the name of their leader.

However, there is no general agreement on the root of the term. The name itself could not be found before the Quran in Arab literature,[13] but can be found in Kitab al Magall, a Christian apocryphic work written in Arabic.[14]

In Islamic traditions, Iblīs is known by many alternative names or titles, such as Abū Murrah (Arabic: أَبُو مُرَّة, "Father of Bitterness") as the name stems from the word "murr" - meaning "bitter", ‘aduww Allāh or ‘aduwallah (Arabic: عُدُوّ الله, "enemy or foe" of God)[15] and Abū Al-Harith (Arabic: أَبُو الْحَارِث, "the father of the plowmen").[16] He is also known by the nickname "Abū Kardūs" (Arabic: أَبُو كَرْدُوس), which may mean "Father who piles up, crams or crowds together".
Although Iblis is often compared to the devil in Christian theology, Islam rejects the idea that Satan is an opponent of God and the implied struggle between God and the devil. Iblis might either be regarded as the most monotheist or the greatest sinner, but remains only a creature of God. Iblis did not become an unbeliever due to his disobedience, but because of attributing injustice to God; that is, by asserting that the command to prostrate themselves before Adam was inappropriate.[17] There is no sign of angelic revolt in the Quran and no mention of Iblis trying to take God's throne[18][19] and Iblis's sin could be forgiven at anytime by God.[20] According to the Quran, Iblis's disobedience was due to his disdain for humanity, a narrative already occurring in early apocrypha.[21] According to scholars, Iblis is a mere creature and thus cannot be the cause or creator of evil in the world; in his function as Satan, he is seen only as a tempter who takes advantage of humanity's weaknesses and self-centeredness, and leads them away from God's path.[22] The existence of evil has been created by God himself. Iblis only operates within the God-given framework. As an angel, functioning as God's instrument of misleading and destruction, as a jinn just another sinner whom has been led astray by God's judgment.

The Greek word apsinthos, which is rendered with the English "wormwood",[3] is mentioned only once in the New Testament, in the Book of Revelation:

Apsinthos is believed to refer to a plant of the genus Artemisia, used metaphorically to mean something with a bitter taste.[4] The English rendering "wormwood" refers to the dark green oil produced by the plant, which was used to kill intestinal worms.[4] In the Book of Revelation, it refers to the water being turned into wormwood, i.e. made bitter.[4]
