are we lost or are we free?

listen for the rhythm that stays when the drum does not

weather waning warning, torn map, corners gone,
here be storms and nameless forms, here be night till dawn.
grit and grey, down I lay, pitch my tent to stay,
one small flame against the mist, one soft word to pray.
stay a night or maybe two, close enough to you,
fog on glass, our breath will write, what the stars already knew.
tussle tissle taddle toe, out into the mist I go,
crumbs of silence marking paths the morning cannot show.
possible, impossible, the word won’t stay inside,
fear wears slippers at the door, safety waits outside.

unidentified, fleeting, one

are we more when drums are none?

fold me where the breath keeps time

hum me safe, a little rhyme

if we vanish into this, call it not a loss but bliss, unidentified, fleeting, one

here be monsters, gentle too, teeth like tide, a hush of blue,
names unspoken, stitched in dew, kept for me and kept for you.
lantern left on porches past, shadow shepherd pacing fast,
count the little lights that bridge, every soul becomes a mast.
possible impossible, I balance on the sill,
if I fall I fall to breath, and there I’m standing still.

if you go, will I too?

if you breathe, I’ll breathe with you.

unidentified, fleeting, known

known in ways no map has shown

pull the veil and feel the seam

Find the pulse without the beam

if we fade beyond the drum,
keep the thread and do not run
unidentified, fleeting, one.

call it edge, call it lip, call it river mouth,
where the names go out and the meanings in.
call it safe to be afraid, brave to rest,
more than skin.

mm-mm-mm

peg the quiet, stake it down, cloth to earth and ground,
let the turning pass my ears until the round is sound.
monsters friendly, stories kind, tide that teaches time,
fable salt that seasons fear until it tastes like sign.
bridge of countless little lights, from “I” to “we” to “one,”
every flicker learning how to orbit without sun.

will the night be gone at last?

yes, but even dark can fast.
