Ben Chatwin’s The Beginning / The End is a double A-side single that delves into the vast cycles of creation and collapse. Inspired by the birth and death of the cosmos, the release explores themes of beauty, decay, and impermanence through rich, textured compositions.

Crafted using analogue hardware pushed to its limits, Chatwin saturates and compresses sound to create a visceral sonic experience. The Beginning reflects the spark of creation, while The End contemplates quiet dissolution.

Premiered at the Sonica Festival 2024 in Glasgow as part of a larger audiovisual project, the tracks are accompanied by mesmerizing visuals from Morgan Beringer, adding a striking dimension to this meditative exploration of existence.

The Beginning

I have been writing about music for nearly two decades now, and it’s time to turn inwards again. Away from being a promotion vehicle and towards a curation platform, supporting music and musicians that resonate within. And when it comes to highlighting one of my favourite electronic musicians, that is certainly the case. Somewhere, in the darkened, quiet and euphonic spaces between synthetic, buzzing pulses and organic, breathing textures, Ben Chatwin has been crafting his sonic language. This voice speaks through modulated frequencies, soaring string arrangements, and the ghostly hum of man-made machinery brought to life. This month, he’s been the featured artist on Headphone Community, where I showcase his music through exclusive track premieres, unreleased alternative mixes, in-depth interviews, and yes, even an 80% OFF discount to his last album, Verdigris. TRACK PREMIERE : Ben Chatwin - Caldera

Part of Art Licks weekender 2018, residents of a modernist housing estate in South East London were invited to contribute to a publication and exhibition within the building. My contribution consisted of manipulated recordings made within the surroundings of the block; contact mic recordings of heavy winds on the netting and local wildlife, such as foxes. The piece was then played back within the escape balcony and communal areas for the duration of the weekend.

LOW RISE (2018)

Stereo excerpt from quadraphonic installation at The London Canal Museum x Emerge Festival 2019. 

4 channel sound, duration: 1 hour 5 minutes

Speaker encased in ice, amplifier, white noise

Slow Time was a three part sound installation presented within the London Canal Museum’s public exhibition spaces and the unique former ice well in the basement. With reference to the building’s former uses, the installation features multi-channel sound compositions consisting of close-up recordings of ice melting and forming; field recordings from an ice manufacturers and an ice skating rink, along with recordings made on the Regent’s Canal. Recordings were also made site-specifically within the extraordinary architecture of the Victorian ice well. A loudspeaker encased within ice plays white noise, gradually melting and becoming louder throughout the duration of the exhibition.
