This week's guest is Nabihah Iqbal who is a musician, producer, DJ and broadcaster from London, currently an artist-in-residence at Somerset House, where she is writing and recording her second album. Her debut album, Weighing of the Heart, was released in December 2017. Nabihah was a resident on BBC Radio during 2018-19 and she hosts a bi-weekly show on NTS Radio, exploring musical traditions and cultures without boundaries.

Guest Mix: Records from Africa with Nabihah Iqbal

This week’s guest is Fedi from All Rights Deserved. He is a vinyl collector and dealer from Berlin, who travels a lot for work. A translator job took him to Kinshasa last December, where he was able to dredge up some 200 45s spanning 3 decades of recordings from the Congo basin.
All records presented here are from the years after renaming the country to Zaïre in ’71. Mobutu’s state ideology “Autenticité” demanded that traditional values, names and music be adopted, which great a many abided by.
Nonetheless, the democratization of the sixties and the concomitant influx of foreign influence, leading all the way to the international super concert accompanying ’74s « Rumble in the Jungle «, had a massive impact on local artists. Especially in Kin it seems, the youth was ready for the next round, streamlining any international craze into their music: Soukous Soul, Son Cubano, Doo Wop, Folksoum, Griot Funk, Synth Candombe, Contemporary Rumba, Reggae Lingala…

They have a band that combines electronic and tropical elements and their debut CARISMA just got released a couple of months ago. Being from Bogotá, Colombia they were exposed by a lot of Caribbean music, they moved to the US to study Jazz and currently live in Brooklyn. Djing wise they love to play Latin and African music.

This week's guest is Epic Vinyls from Brazil. They are Rasmus from Copenhagen and Dona Carla from Rio de Janeiro. They spend a lot of time finding records and playing DJ sets with amazing and little known music. They’ve toured festivals and venues throughout Europe, India and Brazil.
A selection with the purpose to start up your day gently with Brazilian rhythms, messages of peace, love, knowledge and good vibes. It’s a dive into selected songs from different regions using music from private and independent labels only. Some of the tunes have not been available before.
