Myco Molassi's Calendar of Sound

This is the first door of my advent calendar – the song emerged out of one of my practice sessions on electric bass and is almost entirely played on that instrument. I added a little guitar and some synth at the end to fill it up.

Day 1 - Myco Molassi's Calendar of Sound

The second track's working title is "Extraterrestrial Lovemaking". I might work on it some more and release it on Spotify etc in the future... The bassline sounds like a synth but it's actually played on a real bass.

Exploring the sounds of the Fender Jazz Bass that i got from my uncle John. Wow! I got the inspiration when i accidentally bumped the headstock of the Bass againt my desk. Suddenly there was this beautiful droning pad sound. I had to record it!

This beat is fresh out of the bakery. I called it 'Chinese Wurstl' because when i started making it i sampled some Chinese Music and German schlager. After a while i found some other samples that fit the vibe better so I swapped them but i like the name. Made it this weekend and I'm really happy with the result. What do you think?

Boy today i had a reeeeally hard time to decide what to send you people. At the end i went for this Westide Gunn remix featuring Lil Wayne. It's a sample based beat and i added some real guitars and bass to flavor it up. Cha-Ching!

Today's track is the result of one of my practice sessions on electric guitar. I guess i was inspired by some kind of mix of jazz and math rock and wanted to practice my harmonics... Enjoy.

I have a hate-love with this beat. I made in 2014 and reworked it in 2020 when i added the guitars (not shure if my friend Tobi played them?!). Then i remixed it several times in 2022 and now i think it's time to let go of it and see what it does out in the wilderness...

I call this one the "Meaty Broccoli" but don't ask me why. It's a remix of the "The Meters - Aint No Use". I really love the energy of this one!

Today is a bit different once again. This beat sketch is called "Old Powder" and is a bit more electronic than the music in last couple of days.

When i recorded the guitars on this beat i had images of drug traffickers flying low over the jungle in their cessna to avoid the radar... The plane is loaded to the brim with blow. They are laughing and cracking jokes, telling anecdotes about the cops... adrenaline rushes and sweat running down their cheeks from the midnight heat. Track is called Narcos.

This sketch is a "storytelling walking bassline study". I'm not completely shure if it harmonises with the chords perfectly. But why care about harmonical correctness if you can have a party?

I spent this weekend working on a new song at our recording studio with my band "The Late Knights". During warmup, we played this jam wich is our intro when we play live. It's got some mistakes and it's a raw but what i like is that we all were really feeling the moment!

This beat is called "Electric Blanket" because it has that uncomfortable electrosmog type vibe! Any angry rappers out there?

This one reminds me of the more recent Wu-Tang Clan beats by DJ Mathematics. I can definitely imagine Method Man and Ghostface Killa on the track. Who do you hear?

Day 19 - Myco Molassi's Calendar of Sound

This is one of my oldest beats. It must have been around 2008 that i started making it with my friend Damien aka 'Baked D'. It was also around that time that built the Smokin Trees studio in Damiens back yard. I would visit him every day that summer and we did some construction or just relaxed, put some food on the grill and tried ourselves at making beats... This song always reminds me of that summer and the freedom we had. Still being students and not worrying about things too much. Two years ago i reworked the beat a little bit and replayed the bass that was just a plain synth before. It still needs some work but hey this is my calendar of scraps and sketches isn't it? Myco Molassi, also known as Xylem Beats, is a multi-talented artist based in Bern, Switzerland. A skilled producer of boombap beats and a self-taught multiintrumentalist, Myco is known for his hypnotic basslines mixed with eclectic samples and recorded instruments. In addition to his work as a solo artist and DJ, Myco is also a founding member of the instrumental-focussed label Smokin Trees. He's the bass player of the neo soul band 'The Late Knights', that draws inspiration from jamming in a variety of genres, including hip hop, funk, jazz and reggae. Until 2022 he was responsible on the bass and production side of things for the garage-rock band 'The Mimozas' led by songwriter Gazmir Lipoveci.

Myco's passion for music extends beyond his own creative realm. In 2017, he helped create the 'Musikalischer Adventskalender' with his roommates in their livingroom. This project brought together a diverse group of local and international musicians from Iraq to Greece to create and share new music during the holiday season.

In April 2023 he released his debut instrumental the EP 'No Bad Days' with fellow producer and Smokin Trees member Mvny More. 

With a diverse range of interests and a strong commitment to collaboration and community, Myco Molassi is a dynamic artist who continues to not give a fuck.
