We're beyond thrilled to welcome French house music pioneers Alan Braxe & DJ Falcon who share with us with their recent set from Golden Plains Festival! 

Fasten your seatbelts for a high-octane genre bending encounter, packed with plenty of cult French house classics mixed with the duo's signature blend of indie pop, disco and techno with some special edits they made just for the set.

Q. What inspiration did you both draw upon when planning for this set at Golden Plains? How would you describe the feeling in the crowd, and what kind of a story were you hoping to tell with the music that night?

Alan Braxe:

Weeks before playing at Golden Plains many people and friends told us this one is going to be special, you’ll love it! So we were very excited. When we arrived on the site we immediately felt very good energy with a big crowd focusing on the music. All these lights everywhere made it quite unreal, a bit like in a fairy tale. When we played we tried to be quite eclectic covering a wide range of the music we like. We even prepared some special edits backstage before the set when we realized how good the atmosphere was.

DJ Falcon:

As Alain said we were already excited to play there as we had tonnes of great feedback from our Australian mates weeks before the show. We knew this festival was going to suit us well as we’re constantly flirting with pop, rock and electronic music. Honestly we simply play the music we love and tell a little bit of our story, some of our French classics combined with a selection of tracks we like from the moment. 

Q. What were some of your favourite moments from this particular set, and how do you guys find the right balance between the nostalgic classics and the newer French house sounds when preparing for your sets together? 

AB:

As said above we love to play eclectic with a bit of techno, house, French house, indie pop, we don’t really prepare the set, it’s more an improvisation based on our respective selections. It doesn’t really matter to us if the music is new or made 20 years ago, it’s more about playing tracks we love 100%. My fave moment was probably when I played the 1st track “I Saw” by Young Fathers that I edited a few minutes before the set. On stage, when I saw this very enthusiastic crowd, I felt like wow we have full freedom to play whatever we want.

DJF:

Favorite moment, for me, is when you arrive at the place and you instantly know that you’re gonna have a good time. Also after 10/15 mins of our set we were able to know that the audience is super receptive, that’s a good satisfaction for us. Talking about the right balance between classics and newer tracks is mainly dictated by the energy of the audience. I feel like we’re simply going with the flow, we’re somehow just some kind of energy sensor…

Q. Now having completed this long awaited Australia tour, how did you find the experience of returning to the country after so many years, this time as a duo, and where are you hoping to take the Braxe + Falcon project next? 

AB:

It’s been a very pleasant tour, we did other festivals with also a very positive reaction from the people, touring as a duo is also very exciting as there is this common excitement backstage before playing, and also my son is now living in Sydney so I had the chance to spend a lot of time with him. Next for us is studio time to release more music, our next single is set to be released on July 10th on Smugglers Way / Domino, and there will be more to come later in 2024.

Things then get a little tougher with Octodip, a double-time big bass riddim, loaded with washes of drama strings and vocal cut-ups of a less human kid than « Javier »’s. It all works as an eerie rhythm unit no one remembers having started or set up. The thing is clipped and fractured, but strangely deploys a ecstatic groove at the same time. There’s something totally serene and majestic about it, yet the angst is still lingering. One of those “new species” kind of tracks, like “Wut” by Girl Unit, or our own Marble Players’ “Marble Anthem”.

And kinetics is the key here. « Javier » has the Club Cheval trademark non-linear structure : things just happen at almost every second here, but they never make you lose the plot : a dramatic vocal cut-up and an almost 4/4  heavy beat reminiscent of dubstep’s recent explorations in techno lead the way, filled with tiny cartoonish details and hyperreal sound textures. The bass comes in, sweetening the whole thing, but also making the atmosphere emotionally confused and ambivalent. The male talk-box voice then makes us understand we’re actually almost listening to an R&B song, an enigmatic slow jam. A bedroom classic, if you like to get down a certain way.

Colm K is a DJ, producer, and curator from Cork, Ireland, known for soulful selections and deep,
genre spanning sets. Cutting his teeth at the legendary Sir Henry’s and later joining the Red Bull
Music Academy, Colm has gone on to release music with Bastard Jazz, All City Records, and R2, earning support from both critics and peers worldwide.

As co-founder of the long running Cork institution Sunday Times!, Colm has cultivated a community of devoted dancers while also sharing his sound on international stages and through his acclaimed NTS Radio show. His mixes and productions have been featured by the likes of Boiler Room, Okayplayer, Ransom Note, and Stamp The Wax

He has a brand new EP out now on Soul Quest and we must give a special shout out to the recent Marlon George remix of Colm's track 'Back To Basics' which we've been hammering.

Aaand it’s on! “NIGHT VOYAGE TOOL KIT” is the first chapter of the Crossover Series, a new collection of Sound Pellegrino EPs where we explore collaborations between producers from various horizons, scenes, countries or generations, that have so much in common it feels like the world of music doesn’t have a choice but to see them unite under one viciously irresistible groove.

I first came across TOM TRAGO via the world of dutch designer Parra, his Le Le project and the “baguette frappant” parties he used to hold with the Pain O Chokolat crew at the legendary (and now defunct) club Paris Paris. TOM TRAGO represented the more disco, midtempo, soulful side of the dutch house scene at a time where holland was synonymous with high pitched synth lines and bubblin rhythms. When we found out about the music he was releasing on fantastic label Rush Hour we got hooked, his remix for High Powered Boys’ “Udon”, his collaboration with the god Romanthony and his beautiful “Iris” album sealed the deal.

One day we noticed that Tom was exchanging compliments with our UK grimey house hero BOK BOK in the form of digital carrier pigeons through the information superhighway. BOK BOK, the co-founder of genre-defining imprint Night Slugs, is known for being very picky. His validation is a special mark of trust cherished by up and coming producers worldwide, the constant proof of his impeccable taste. We were so psyched to see BOK BOK give props to a producer completely outside of the scene he was known to evolve in, that we knew we had to bring them together as the first combination in the Crossover Series project. We set up some studio sessions with the two of them in Amsterdam and after a short week of brainstorming and hard work surrounded by analog synths and drum machines at Tom’s studio, the 6 tracks that make up “NIGHT VOYAGE TOOL KIT” were born.

“PATHFINDER” is a dry & gritty beat led by a haunting space bass and elastic drums, backed by a soft layer of analog noise, like a hot wind of realness blowing over the city.

“WHITE TYPE R” stars an epileptic rimshot reigning over an obsessive synth. Simple and effective, this is a perfect spice to layer on top of any track in need of that extra “umph”, nicely fulfilling the EP’s “tool kit” promise.

“VECTOR” is a modernist fusion of bok-bokian grime and tragoist soul chops with a hint of miami bass underlining both producers’ most intuitive common drive and what brings them together: a new, never heard before take on ghetto house’s golden years.

“POM CLASH” sounds like a Night Slugs party deejayed by BOK BOK while TOM TRAGO is riding alone in the middle of the dancefloor in a klaxon horn-equipped bumper car.

“TIME MASTER” is like a remix of a remix in pure metadiddycal tradition. Sampling Teki Latex and Para One’s Canblaster remix, turning it into a beefed-up percolating Dancemania hommage, and then sticking a mesmerizing G-Funk siren on top of all that.

“LIL MA BONUS BEAT” concludes the odyssey with a bassy nod to the duo’s common hip hop roots, flippin a screwed up vocal sample into pure funky acid Chicago madness.
