Written after a vacation in Fernandina Beach, Florida the song was very influenced by The Beach Boys.

 “I wanted to make something with some surprises in it, something that had movement like "Good Vibrations" or "Our Prayer” which is where the tempo changes come from. Lyrically the song was influenced by Lou Reed's "Perfect Day. I love how he wrote this melancholic song about being happy. As someone who dreams a lot about vacation, I usually feel a little depressed at least once during that time off so that resonated with me. For me the song was more about not being able to relax out of worry for my young family, especially my kids. But I still wanted the song to feel beacy. It’s like I wanted to make a beach song, but like a wintery beach song.” 

The song is split into three sections with different tempos. A reverb drenched surf guitar kicks off the first section. The rhythm section comes in at the first tempo change an R&B groove kicks in which builds into a climax at the second chorus. The climax then resolves to the final section which is a callback to the beginning. The final section resolves it main mantra with the lyrics:

"Love them till you lose composure/tear your silly world apart/this is how you don't get over/this is how you break a heart" 

Reinforcing the idea that love is about sacrifice, the subtle chipping away of our ego that we must do to make space for higher things in our existence. Happiness breaks our hearts, in a good way. 

The song was recorded in Atlanta and produced in Nashville, Tennessee with Louis Johnson (LONAS, Mackenzie Porter) and Reed Beiren (GAYLE, James Droll). It releases January 13th on all platforms.

How to Break a Heart

5 DAYS OF SUMMER!! Is my tribute to a formative soundtrack for me, the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack. Me and Jake Dane (bassist) sat down to produce these tracks from my home studio in Atlanta, Georgia. We wanted to capture a feeling we felt back when iPods were still a thing, when summers were never ending and the world was wide with possibility. We wanted to merge our memories of the soundtrack with an imagined past that never really was. Taking inspiration from bands like MGMT, Roosevelt, Justice and Daft Punk we wanted to rearrange these songs to give them a new but familiar edge. 

We hope you enjoy...but you should know up front this is NOT a love story.

This track was made between Atlanta and Paris and features bass and drums by my buddies Mathieu Gramoli and Thomas Clarice (we briefly played together in the band Her). And was mixed by Guillaume Jaoul in my favorite studio in Paris: Tropicalia!

There's also a reason the artwork is purple! I thought a lot about an artist so influential you already know who I'm talking about. This is my tribute to him I guess :)

Hydrangeas

The song is about positive nostalgia and how a link to the past can be a path to good days ahead. It’s a song with a laid back groove inspired by records of the 1980’s like The Gap Band, Michael Jackson or Chic. The perfect soundtrack for a late summer cocktail.
