Juno Falls was the musical outlet for film-maker Myles O’Reilly. In 2004, with help from some illustrious industry talent including Crowded House’s Nick Seymour and Producer/Keyboardist Herbie Macken and friends Dara Diffily (bass) and David Shakespeare (drums), Juno Falls released their debut album Starlight Drive. O’Reilly, a talented singer, songwriter, artwork designer and film-maker, hails from Dublin but his albums evoked that fresh open air, earthy feeling of the country side rather than the Big Shmoke (The City). This is unsurprising really, as the bulk of Starlight Drive was written in Schull, a remote fishing village in Co. Cork. Juno Falls’ music is often described as being folksy but this has more to do with the inspiration drawn from those remote surroundings than O’Reilly’s song writing preference. His weapon of choice is usually acoustic guitar so this will certainly give the music a folksy feeling but the quirky lyrics, airy falsetto vocals and a keen sense of melodic harmony keeps Juno Falls’ sound firmly grounded in the world of alternative pop (if such a world exists). In fact, on Juno Falls most recent release (an EP released on Bandcamp.com in 2012 simply titled Juno Falls EP) O’Reilly refers to his music as folk-pop. This is sadly also where he announces his departure from the music industry describing his final contribution as follows:

“Folk-pop-armageddon tunes written and recorded by me in 2010 just before I quit playing to become a film-maker and creator of the music film website arbutusyarns.net”

So why should you buy Starlight Drive then? Well perhaps there’s a feint thread of hope that increased album sales will convince Myles to come together with Dara and David to give Juno Falls another try. Aside from that it’s an airy fresh uplifting album and it complies with the Song 3 Rule. Drawing on the ancient Chinese philosophy: If you like (at least) 3 songs, you buy the album.

Award winning music video and documentary film maker Myles O’Reilly unintentionally began his career by combining three previous and not so rewarding vocations to form a new hobby while unemployed in a global recession. A gofer with Irish national broadcasters RTE, a photographer and photographic printer, and experience as a recording artist signed to Sony Music Publishing and V2 records UK, in 2009 Myles borrowed a video camera to document local musicians performances and upload the footage to Youtube.

Since then, multi-tasking O’Reilly has filmed, directed and edited over 100 music videos and 20+ music documentaries of Irish musicians at home and abroad, including Bono, Glen Hansard, Villagers, Imelda May, The Script, James Vincent McMorrow, Sinead O’Connor, Lisa Hannigan, Mick Flannery and Julie Feeney, alongside other International artists such as Hollywood sound track virtuoso Ernst Reijseger, Icelandic artists Soléy, Múm and Amiina, Janelle Monea, Martina Topley Bird, The Staves, Tegan and Sara and a long arm list of many rising and emerging artists, all available to view from his blog Arbutus Yarns.
