Earlier this year I was approached by Jerome Astwood, Bandmaster of the West End Community Church in Bermuda asking whether I would consider writing a Benediction for the band to perform in an upcoming remembrance service. 

Having been at the corps for many years, he has fond memories of the congregation singing on their way out of church, and so he asked for it to include three tunes that have special significance to the church -
In thee, O lord; O Father, let Thy love remain & Thou wilt keep him in perfect piece.

This benediction includes these three beautiful hymns, as well as references to other benediction tunes. The significance of the words as a benediction prayer is highlighted in the piece; After placing our trust in the Lord, we are able to fully raise our voices in adoration to our God, three in one - and then from this we are assured that we will be watched over by our father who loves us. 

Written for Unity Series this piece can be performed with just five players. I hope you enjoy this reflective piece.

At the start of last Summer I was privileged to go to Russia with the Boys' Choir from Tiffin school - an amazing experience. Whilst we were there we visited the Hermitage Museum, and we were able to have a look at just a selection of the thousands of incredible artworks that they have on display there. As we were being rushed through the tour, I noticed a very small statue which I found oddly stunning, but we were ushered quickly on through more and more of the museum. 

Right at the end of the tour, we had 20 minutes to ourselves, and so I decided I needed to go back and find this strange little statue, not one of particular fame or note. The Hermitage is gigantic, so realistically this was a little like looking for a needle in a haystack. I retraced my steps and eventually found this statue. This beautiful little statue, of our Heavenly Father holding his one son as he lays dying, really spoke to me. It's a very Russian piece, but the emotion that is reflected through the way that Jesus is held here by an almighty father... it just felt so moving. In the midst of this hectic tour, and hectic summer, it was a real moment of stillness and reflection.

It was at this point, as I'm looking at this statue, that I begin to hear this amazing sound. The sounds of Russian Choral music, suddenly and quite unexpectedly, began to fill the halls. Beautifully simple music, I decided to follow the sound, to find five (very large) Russian men singing this music. A small crowd gathered, and in the midst of this huge museum, it was a very special moment. 

Once they had finished, I had to find out what the music was that they had been singing, so in my very (very) limited Russian I asked the men. It was a setting of the Lord's Prayer - and suddenly it all made sense.

Written by Nikolai Kedrov, this is a well known piece of Russian Orthodox music, and is one of Kedrov's most performed works. As soon as I returned home, I decided to find out more about the piece, and in doing so have created this transcription.

Originally written for the West End Community Church (Corps) in Bermuda in March 2016. 

When Oceans Rise contains two contemporary worship songs, Still (Hide me now) and Oceans (Where feet may fail). Both songs speak of a loving caring God who will protect and shield us during the storms of life. Turbulent waters are heard, but an ever present spirit can be sense throughout the music.

Arranged for Unity Series, this piece can be performed with as little as 5 players, but has the scope to stretch to a full brass ensemble.

Written for the Ah-Hyun Corps in South Korea upcoming 100th Anniversary. March 2016.

One of the greatest blessings that I have had with writing music, has been having the ability to connect with others in countries all around the world. Whilst we may not share the same language, the ability to make music unites us all.

An example of this is with the latest piece that I am working on. I am just now completing a brand new Cornet Solo based on the Korean worship song, Until the Lord Returns.

I would never have come across this beautiful worship song if it had not been for Mylestone Music and the connections that it has helped me to forge. I hope that this new piece will bring a blessing to those who use it in the near future.

Until The Lord Returns (Cornet Solo) (2016) - General Series/Brass Band*

Arduus ad Solem (Striving towards the Sun) was the original motto of the University of Manchester, who asked me to write an opening fanfare for them. It's something a bit different, with a broad fanfare theme followed by a continuous drive through the piece as the band works it's way heavenwards.

Originally written for the GNY Music Camp, June 2016

The theme for this years GNY Music Camp was Romans 8:37 'The Conquerors', and so I was asked whether I could provide something for the week. It was a very quick turn around, but I decided to work on the tune Maccabeus, with the words associated 'Thine is the Glory, Risen Conquering Son' of the fist verse, and 'Make us more than conquerors'. 

It ended up being a short concert opener in a Celtic style, with plenty of opportunity for the various sections of the band to shine through.

This is the first major work that I have written for Brass Band for quite some time, and is one that I have long hoped to actually take the time to write down.

(Adj) Something that is characterised by light

I was approached by the Music Ministries Unit, Salvation Army UK Territory, to write an arrangement for the next part of their regular journal, Scripture Based Songs.

This is a journal of contemporary worship songs, arranged for brass band, to accompany the members of the church who will then sing the song. It’s a fantastic worship tool, and I feel very honoured to have been asked to write for this great journal.

And so here was my chosen song, Lord I Need You – Arranged for brass band with vocals in mind. I hope you enjoy it.
