The Blankout Agreement

Next to join the ranks at Hell Yeah Recordings is MAXIME DANGLES with a typically experimental and unpredictable new EP. The French producer is an analogue nut that tours a devastating live show around places like Nuits Sonores, Berghain/Panorama Bar and Rex Club. He’s been a Kompakt recording artist since 2006 and is still as individual as ever, toying with elements of house, techno, nu disco and much more.

SUN E opens the EP with a skipping minimal techno funk where squelchy claps are joined by all sorts of raw FX, bleeps and bleeps. It’s wholly inhuman before some sad, lingering piano notes douse the whole bristling arrangement in plenty of melancholy and bring it alive. It’s at once twisted and digital yet organic and serene, making it unique indeed.

Golden Gate is much less dark and heads-down. Hidden kick drums thud below soft bell patterns, panpipes, trumpets and more percussion and the whole thing is on a constant upward arc in tiny repeated loops. At the top, a blistered acid synth right from the future sprays in like a light sabre – it’s a dramatic, epic track with plenty of genuine musicality at its core.

Closing out the far-ranging EP is a SUN E remix from label mates TEMPELHOF who strip it back to reverberating pianos and spacious analogue lines before a joyful little guitar changes the mood completely. It’s the sort of thing Mr Scruff or Lemon Jelly would love. Stuffed with instruments, found sounds and a real dynamism, this EP confirms Dangles to be a genuine sonic inventor with a style all his own.
