Wir brauchten früher keine große Reise
Wir wurden braun auf Borkum und auf Sylt
Doch heute sind die Braunen nur noch Weiße
Denn hier wird man ja doch nur tiefgekühlt
Ja früher gab's noch Hitzefrei
Das Freibad war schon auf im Mai
Ich saß bis in die Nacht vor unserem Haus
Da hatten wir noch Sonnenbrand
Und Riesenquallen an dem Strand
Und Eis und jeder Schutzmann zog die Jacke aus

Wann wird's mal wieder richtig Sommer
Ein Sommer wie er früher einmal war?
Ja mit Sonnenschein von Juni bis September
Und nicht so nass und so sibirisch wie im letzten Jahr

Und was wir da für Hitzewellen hatten –
Pulloverfabrikanten gingen ein –
Da gab es bis zu vierzig Grad im Schatten
Wir mussten mit dem Wasser sparsam sein
Die Sonne knallte ins Gesicht
Da brauchte man die Sauna nicht
Ein Schaf war damals froh wenn man es schor
Es war hier wie in Afrika
Wer durfte machte FKK –
Doch heut', heut' summen alle Mücken laut im Chor

The outdoor pool was already open in May.
I sat in front of our house until late into the night.
We still had sunburns.
And giant jellyfish on the beach.
And ice, and every police officer took off their jackets.

A summer like it used to be?
Yes, with sunshine from June to September
And not as wet and as Siberian as last year

And what heatwaves we had –
Sweater manufacturers went under –
It was up to 40 degrees in the shade
We had to be sparing with water
The sun beat down on our faces
There was no need for a sauna
Back then, a sheep was happy to be sheared
It was like Africa here
Those who were allowed to go nude –
But today, today, all the mosquitoes are buzzing loudly in unison

August 2025 Currently on residency in Italy ! 
These are 3 short sketches using field recordings captured around Montegiovi, Tuscany. With these little works I am experimenting freely with what can be produced from each days sounds -  manipulating them and stiching them back together with the aim of producing a long format work at the end of the residency. 
I am truly thankful for this opportunity that has been provided for me by the Salamanca Arts Centre in Tasmania and Cultivate Projects/La Baldi residency in Italy and The USA. 
And of course the wonderful people of Montegiovi !

Some of our art is made on computers, some of it is made by hand. We are particularly interested in that gray area in between where you cant really tell. All of what we create here is one work laid out in segments, all connected. The Mystic Tape Deck universe is vast and explores all manner of adding meaning to our lives, while pondering meaninglessness.
